2 Where does this project come from? Aberdeen, 1 October 2010, CPMR General Assembly: vote on a Resolution In favour of an interregional mobility pilot action for young people in the maritime sector, to be supported by the European Union the Vasco da Gama Programme ; Why the Regions? Due to the fact that European Regions usually have significant powers in the fields of education and training; Why youth mobility? It is a unanimously recognised means to tackle the lack of attractiveness of maritime careers.

3 From a pilot action to an umbrella initiative and a projects incubator Given the strong interest of the concept among Regions(40 Regions involved at various stages of the process) and its relevance for EU policies (IMP, EU Maritime Transport Policy), VDG upgraded as a label, under which projects, being either thematic or geographic, would be launched (with the support of EU tools: Interreg, Leonardo...); VDG TGSMT as a pioneer concrete project, approved by the European Commission in July 2013, legally contracted in December 2013, a 2-year project.

5 General Objectives Promote quality of education and training in the maritime transport sector to address three specific challenges: maritime safety, reducing environmental impact and increasing competitiveness of the sector; Launch the bases for European mobility for students, trainees, instructors/trainers/teachers, involving educational and training institutions Increase cooperation between industry and European educational and training actors to improve seafarers competences and adapt to the requirements of the shipping industry; As a result, promote the attractiveness of maritime professions.

6 Specific Objectives Establish a pioneering network of institutions covering the European maritime territory in these areas Strengthen education and training in new technologies Prepare valuable pilot education and training programmes Prepare youth mobility schemes at European level in the maritime transport sector, in line with the maritime Erasmus concept Translate the main environmental objectives of the European maritime transport policy, into maritime training programmes Exchange best practice and produce a series of useful recommendations to the sector and to institutions and thus generate a real European added value; Grant a high level of attention and priority to the human dimension. Links between the Master Programme (WP1) and the maritime Erasmus (WP4); Including an environmental dimension (WP3) to the Master Programme (WP1); Links between Simulators (WP2) and the Master Programme (WP1) Capitalise on main VDG s results with other EU projects and/or initiatives Need to bring EMSA on board Starting to draw up main recommendations Developing project spin-off: thematic and/or geographic projects eligible for various EU tools Feed into the website with relevant info and with your help
