2 The Humanities General Guidelines for Colorado Humanities Grants Thinkers throughout history have wrestled with the question "What does it mean to be human?" The search for answers leads us through the humanities, diverse fields of study that offer insight into our past, present and future. Exploring the humanities isn't limited to students and scholars. It's a study renewed each time we read a book, discuss a film or play, research our family history, or debate the ethical choices of modern life. Drawing on the definition given by Congress when it established the National Endowment for the Humanities, Colorado Humanities defines the humanities as literature, history, philosophy, ethics, languages, linguistics, jurisprudence, archaeology, comparative religion, the history, theory and criticism of the arts, and those aspects of the social sciences that employ historical or philosophical approaches. But the humanities are more than a collection of academic disciplines; they offer ways to understand and evaluate the human experience. Colorado Humanities devotes its resources to two key areas: developing humanities education programs for all Coloradans, and awarding grants that enable other not-for-profits to develop projects for their communities. Affiliated with the National Endowment for the Humanities, Colorado Humanities works in partnership with Colorado citizens and scholars to develop its programs and provides staff assistance for grant recipients. Grant Proposal Requirements for Research Grants Present your research grant proposal following the outline below and attach it to the cover sheet on page 4. The complete proposal should not exceed ten (10) double-spaced, typed pages; including cover sheet, narrative, curriculum vita, and budget. I. The proposal narrative is a description of the research project including anticipated outcomes. (Recommended length is 3 pages.) It should include the following: a. The significance of the research to the humanities in Colorado. b. The major lines of investigation to be developed in the course of the research. c. The institutions and/or sources to be consulted. d. A research plan. e. The intended product of the research (book, article, etc.). II. Attach a current vita of no more than 3 pages. III. Budget (Colorado Humanities grants are awarded on a cost-share basis. Applicants must show cash or in-kind contributions which equal or exceed the grant request. In-Kind contributions may include services, supplies, or facilities donated to the project, or cash from either the sponsoring organization or other sources which do not qualify as third party donors. Please use the Colorado Humanities budget form provided.) If matching cash is provided by a third party source, contact the Colorado Humanities staff for additional information. 1.
3 Research Grants For Humanities Scholars Application Instructions Purpose: To encourage humanities-oriented, scholarly research on the history, literature, cultures, and peoples of Colorado and/or on regional studies in history and culture which emphasize Colorado; and to encourage the dissemination of that research to the Colorado public. Eligibility: Applicants must be scholars. Scholars in this context will be defined as those who hold a doctorate (or highest appropriate degree) in one of the humanities or humanities-related academic disciplines, or who, by their previous record of scholarly research and professional publications and contributions in the appropriate disciplines, may be similarly qualified. Scholars do not have to be affiliated with an academic institution in order to apply. Amounts of Grants: Grant requests may not exceed $1,000. Applicants may combine a Colorado Humanities research award with funding from other sources for a larger project, but the Colorado Humanities award will be made only for a discrete and clearly delineated portion of such a larger project. Criteria for Evaluation: Proposals will be evaluated on the basis of: 1) The significance of the research to the humanities in Colorado. Is the research likely to produce new information, insights, and/or interpretations in the humanities pertaining to Colorado? 2) The professional qualifications of the scholar(s) 3) The project's potential effectiveness as seen in the plan of work. (Are the objectives realistic and achievable within the time span and in relation to research resources? Is the topic likely to be of interest to the Colorado public?) Review Process: Proposals will be evaluated by a review committee designated by the Colorado Humanities Board of Directors. Colorado Humanities reserves the right to present proposals to outside scholars for peer review. The Colorado Humanities Board of Directors makes the final decision on all grant awards. Award notification will be made approximately two months after the grant deadline. 2.
4 Restrictions and Obligations: 1) Although Colorado Humanities research awards are designed to aid and promote research which could be judged critically by national experts in the relevant discipline, it is also the intent that such research will enhance knowledge of the humanities in and about Colorado and be available to Coloradans. Therefore, the successful applicant may be asked to be available to speak or otherwise participate in other relevant Colorado Humanities projects. The successful applicant will be encouraged to make at least one presentation for a public audience on the subject; such a presentation may be arranged by the scholar or by Colorado Humanities. Appropriate honoraria will be available for any Colorado Humanities-sponsored speaking engagements. Similarly, successful applicants will be encouraged to seek publication in sources that are generally accessible to the public in institutional or public. 2) Research projects must be completed within one year of the date of the award. Successful applicants will be required to submit a brief progress report (one page) at the mid-point of their project, and a completed manuscript or report at the end of the grant period. 3) All materials publicizing or resulting from grant activities shall contain an acknowledgement of NEH and Colorado Humanities support. The acknowledgment shall also include the following statement: Any views, findings, conclusions or recommendations expressed in this (publication) (program) (exhibition) (website) do not necessarily represent those of the National Endowment for the Humanities or the Colorado Humanities. 4) Research grants may not be used for work on an advanced degree. 5) Scholars may receive no more than two grants within a four-year period. 6) Grant funds may be used by the scholar: as a stipend; for expenses associated with research; for travel to and associated living costs at research sites; for obtaining research materials; and for the preparation of a manuscript including photographs, maps, typing, etc. Award money may not be used to buy released time or costs for replacement of the scholar in his or her regular employment, nor for expenses associated with work toward an advanced degree. 7) Deadline Please contact our office for the deadline date (303) ) Colorado Humanities grants are awarded on a dollar for dollar matching basis. Applicants must show cash or in-kind contributions that equal or exceed the grant request. In-Kind contributions may include services, supplies, or facilities donated to the project, or cash from either the sponsoring organization or other sources that do not qualify as third party donors. If matching cash is provided by a third party source, contact the Colorado Humanities staff for additional information. NOTE: Colorado Humanities grants are contingent on availability of funds. Colorado Humanities staff is available to review draft proposals. Drafts must be submitted at least 10 days prior to the grant deadline.
