7 SERVICE LEARNING PLACEMENTS 1. Browse through community placement sites approved by your instructor. 2. Contact your preferred organization and confirm that they will accept you (complete their application process if required). 3. Get the name and of your site supervisor. 4. Place with the organization through The Beach. 5. Complete the CSULB SL Learning Plan and Participation Guidelines form and review the Student Handbook.

Your name, , and emergency contact information. Location of your service. This should populate automatically if you place yourself and select your site staff before completing this form. Learning Objectives: What you should learn/gain through the service activity. (Often comes directly off your syllabus, Check with your instructor for specific instructions.)

12 STUDENT FORMS Student Handbook and End-of-Term Survey The short Student Handbook can be downloaded as a PDF document from The Beach. The voluntary End-of-Term Survey will be made available during the last few weeks of the semester.

13 STUDENT FORMS CSULB Service-Learning Time Log (vs. 2017) The time log is not yet fully integrated into S4 at this time. S4 Links to an external Time Log, created using Qualtrics.

14 STUDENT FORMS CSULB Service-Learning Time Log (vs. 2017) The Time Log link is in the yellow box on the S4 Student Dashboard. You can enter from one to eight service dates and hours at a time. There is space for reflection/notes. When you hit submit be SURE to download and save the PDF document for your own records and to turn in if required. Currently you are not able to go to S4 to see the hours you have already submitted (this function should be available next semester).

17 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Why am I limited to just the organizations listed by my instructor? Listed placements have a formal affiliation with the university and your instructor and the community organizations agree they are appropriate for your class. Other placements in The Beach may be a poor match for your course or do not have the capacity to accept students from your course at this time. Organizations not listed in The Beach likely do not have a current service-learning affiliation with the university and establishing an affiliation may delay the start of your service activity. After browsing the options for my course, I found a placement I like. How do I proceed? 1. Contact the community organization you want to place with and verify that they can accept you. Circumstances may change and we cannot always guarantee that they will be able to take you on even though our database may say there is room. 2. Complete any application processes required by the organization and get the name and of the person you will be reporting to. 3. After confirming your placement with the organization, go into The Beach and finalize your placement. Avoid surprising the organization by placing with them without contacting them first. 4. Complete the CSULB SL Learning Plan and Participation Guidelines online form in The Beach. How do I track my service learning hours? Use the The Beach Time Log found on your S4 Dashboard to log your hours and document any reflections or observations. When you hit the submit button, make sure to download the PDF document summarizing your time entry and save it for your files. Make sure to consult with your professor to get clear instructions on how you will submit and verify your service learning hours. Your professor may have additional forms and/or requirements for documenting your service learning hours (in addition to the time log in S4).
