1 CMDS 8920 Clinical Internship Fall Semester Erin Reynolds-Peacock, CCC-A Office 1143-c Office Hours: Tuesdays and Thursdays 8:00-9:30 Office Phone: or (for special appointment or voice mail) Home Phone: (no later than 8 PM CST) COURSE DESCRIPTION: The purpose of this course is to provide an off-campus educationally directed practice experience for students enrolled in the AuD program. This clinical placement offers the student the opportunity to engage in knowledge based practice and is the medium through which integration and application of all parts of the curriculum occur. Placements have been approved based on the broad range of clinical experiences available at the site and also based on the sites ability to provide distinctive audiological experiences not offered at the on campus clinics. LEARNER OUTCOMES: Because this course is primarily a laboratory experience, experience will vary according to clinical site. Specific conceptual and clinical objectives will also vary depending on the experience available to the student clinician. Learner outcomes will be measured primarily by preceptor evaluation (1) and classroom participation (2). Standard IV-A: Foundations of Practice The applicant must have knowledge of : A21. Universal Precautions and Infectious/contagious diseases A24. The use of instrumentation according to manufacturer s specifications and recommendations A25. Determining whether instrumentation is in calibration according to accepted standards Standard IV-B: Prevention and Identification The applicant must have knowledge and skills necessary to: B1. Implement activities that prevent and identify dysfunction in hearing and communication, balance and other auditory-related symptoms B3. Screen individuals for hearing impairment and disability/handicap using clinically appropriate, culturally sensitive, and age- and sitespecific screening measures

2 Standard IV-C: Assessment The applicant must have knowledge of and skills in: C3. Evaluating information from appropriate sources and obtaining a case history to facilitate assessment planning C4. Performing otoscopy for appropriate audiological assessment/management decisions, determining the need for cerumen removal, and providing a basis for medical referral C5. Conducting and interpreting behavioral and electrophysiologic methods to assess hearing thresholds and auditory neural function C10. Preparing a report, including interpreting data, summarizing findings, generating recommendations, and developing audiologic treatment/management plan Standard IV-D: Intervention (Treatment) The applicant must have knowledge of and skills in: D2. Development of a culturally appropriate, audiologic rehabilitative management plan that includes, when appropriate, the following: a. Evaluation, selection, verification, validation, and dispensing of hearing aids, sensory aids, hearing assistive devices, alerting systems, and captioning devices, and educating the consumer and family/caregivers in the use of and adjustment to such technology D3. Determining the candidacy for vestibular and balance rehabilitation therapy to persons with vestibular and balance impairments Assignments: o Signed ASHA hours for Fall Term 2013 must be in student file no later than Friday following the first class of Spring Semester. Students who have not submitted completed hours by that time, will forfeit ASHA hours obtained at their Fall Rotation site until completed hours for Summer Semester are submitted. Prior to class on August 26th, update your resume including experiences you had during the Summer Term. Remember that this is the resume that will be mailed to potential 4 th year sites. **You can have someone at Career Development Services look at your resume if you wish by ing it to them at eresume@auburn.edu with resume in the subject line. CLASS SCHEDULE: In addition to your presence in clinic at your Third Year Rotation site for 24 hours a week, we will have several classes on Thursdays at 11:00 am. August 21 August 29 First Day Fall Semester Preliminary resumes due. Be developing a list of sites to mail 4 th year packets. Know name and address of contact

3 audiologist if at all possible without direct contact. Rotation paperwork and weekly/asha hours requirements September 5 September 12 September 19 September 26 October 3 October 10 October 17 October 24 October 31 November 7 November 14 November 21 November 28 December 5 Initial 4 th year site list due Assign state licensure presentations. Research the state licensure procedures for 4th Year students in the state you are considering 4th Year placement. 4th Year interview techniques with AU Career Services Meet individually with members of the Class of 2015 to discuss Fall Rotation and 4 th year options All packets prepared for signature and mailing. Packets will be signed and mailed out today. State licensure presentations. Class speaker: US Navy recruiter to discuss fourth year opportunities with the US Navy Meet individually with students regarding 3rd or 4th year placement. Meet individually with students regarding 3 rd or 4 th year placement. No Class 4th Year stipend procedures Available during class time for questions/concerns, etc. Topic Presentation of most interesting experience at Fall Rotation site (15 minutes for each class members) Topic Presentation of most interesting experience at Fall Rotation site (15 minutes for each class members) THANKSGIVING HOLIDAYS Final class, site evaluations due and evaluations completed **All dates/topics subject to change.

4 Schedule for applying to established site for Spring Third Year Rotation o Let me know which sites you are interested in visiting and I will contact the site. If several students are interested in visiting the same site, make every effort to visit together. o I will call the sites and let them know you will be calling to set up interviews. Set up interview with appropriate sites and complete all interviews by November 1. o If more than one person interviews at a site, the site will choose the student based on resume and interview. o I will develop a contract and all contracts for Spring rotations. Schedule for applying to Un-established Site for Third Year Rotation Let me know the name of the site and a contact person by September 2. o I will make a telephone contact with the site and send a site questionnaire to determine the suitability of the site. o If site agrees to take student for Third Year placement for Spring Semester, the student will set up an interview at the site to be completed before November 1. o If the site accepts the student for Spring Third Year Rotation, I will mail a contract to the site. COURSE REQUIREMENTS ATTENDANCE: You will begin your clinic responsibilities on Wednesday, August 21, and your last day of off campus clinic for fall semester will be December 4. While at your Fall Rotation site you are responsible to be in clinic Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday each week of the semester. You will follow the holiday schedule of your Rotation site only taking holidays that are observed by your Rotation site. Although Auburn University students will be off the week of Thanksgiving, unless your site is closed for the week (unlikely) you will be at your site Monday through Wednesday of Thanksgiving week. You will maintain a daily log of your clinic hours. You do not need to include the names of your patients but must maintain daily information on the number of hours obtained with each supervisor and also record if patients are children or adults. You must review this log with your supervisor weekly and they should initial your weekly log. Keep copies of the weekly logs through out the semester. You will be turning in your weekly log with original signatures at the end of the semester. Total hours will be calculated using these weekly logs. If you are unable to be at your clinic site during on any of your designated days due to illness or emergency, call your immediate supervisor prior to the start of your daily clinic

5 responsibilities, and tell them the reason for your absence. You are also required to call or me and let me know the reason you are unable to be at your clinic assignment. If you are interested in requesting absence from a clinic assignment for a nonemergency, talk to me about the request prior to discussing it with your supervisor. If you are excused from your clinic assignment for a non-emergency, you will be required to make up the time on a Friday, during the week of final examinations or during the semester break. GRADE DETERMINATION: The grade for this class is Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory and will be determined by the following: Successful performance (grade of S) at Rotation site Attendance for scheduled appointments Attendance in class Class Participation Completion of Spring Rotation site paperwork on schedule. Paperwork will include: o Completion of preceptor s evaluation of student o Student s 2 page description of Rotation site o Student s completion of evaluation of preceptor(s) o Student s self clinical evaluation o Student s self evaluation of clinical competencies o Student s weekly hour summary form (initialed by supervisor) o Student s copy of preliminary hours for Fall o Student s final and initialed copy of final (and correct) Fall hours END OF SEMESTER PAPERWORK: On Thursday, December 5 you will turn in a typed, two page summary of your Fall Rotation Site. This summary should include detailed information on the clinic experiences you had at the site and also a review of the advantages and disadvantages of the site. You will also be completing several self evaluations and supervisor evaluations at that time. Bring copies of all weekly hour sheets initialed by your supervisor. Also bring a copy of your final ASHA hours for Summer and your preliminary calculated hours for Fall. Clinical faculty will be checking your hours at that time. On your final day of clinic you are responsible to get all ASHA hours signed by your supervisors. These hours should be in your student file by no later than Wednesday, December 11. If all of the required paperwork is not in your student file by that time you will receive an incomplete for the course and will be responsible for completing the paperwork to clear the incomplete the following semester. If clinic hours are not in your student file by the first Friday following the start of spring semester, you will forfeit the clinic hours obtained at your Fall Rotation site until ASHA hours are on file.

6 POLICY: Although I attempt to check and answer my daily, because I am often off campus visiting students, it is sometimes several hours before is checked. During the week I will answer student with 48 hours. Typically I do not check after 5pm or over the weekend. TELEPHONE POLICY: If I am not in my office to answer your phone call, the best way to contact me is by leaving a message on the university voice mail system. If I am on campus, I check my messages several times a day. If you need to contact me, please feel free to call me at home (before 8 pm). In the case of an emergency, contact the Departmental Administrator or Assistant (334) and they will locate me in the clinic. ACADEMIC HONESTY CODE: Auburn University views academic honesty as critical to academic integrity and an important part of the educational process. In order for students to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to perform in their career fields, it is important that each student complete his or her own work. Students enrolled in this class are expected to follow The Student Academic Honesty Code which is presented infull within the Tiger Cub Student Handbook. TERMINATION: If a student withdraws from a 4 th Year Internship due to unexpected events in the life of the student, the internship must be repeated resulting in a delay of graduation. If a student is terminated from an Internship, the Departmental Standards Committee will determine if the student can continue in the program. Students may be terminated for the following reasons: Level of student performance is below standard A student s failure to meet the standards for ethical practice Repeated tardiness or absences from the site without notification or approval Inappropriate behavior which is inconsistent with the principles and practices of the Audiology profession An attempt to harm oneself or someone else STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES: Any student with a handicap that requires special accommodations should talk with the preceptor and the instructor so that arrangements can be made.
