This one-day careers event has been established to show attendees that engineering is a career worth pursuing. It is jointly coordinated and sponsored by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), and the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) with strong support from STEMNET contract holders in each region. The objectives of EYF are: To illustrate the diverse careers available to engineers. To encourage A-Level and GNVQ students to study engineering after leaving school or college. To increase public awareness of the importance of engineering to society and the economy. Looking into the future of engineering innovation by imagining Olympic Sport in A half day or full day event of activities for students to learn about engineering concepts and innovation, and their social impact. The activities are based on the Olympic (and Paralympic) Sport heritage, and, in particular, the London Olympic Games of 1908, 1948, For each activity, students are guided and supported in their exploration of the learning materials by a team of volunteer engineers from the STEM Ambassadors scheme. Portia s team ensures the participation of suitable quality and number of engineers, and provides all the needed learning materials and tools for all activities. The level of enquiry and learning outcomes can be adapted to the students and curriculum needs of KS3 and KS4. In 2012, three SET for Sport events were hosted by Parliament Hill School in Camden, Redbourne School in Bedfordshire and Wotton Upper School in Bedfordshire. This event in local schools by the IMechE. This innovative initiative is aimed at Year 8 (12-13 year olds) and has been designed to meet Key Stage 3 of the National Curriculum. It aims to engage a more diverse range of pupils in thinking about engineering careers at a relatively early age in their educational development and thereby attract wider participation in STEM subjects. On 22nd October 2013, the GLR YMP held the this year's Our World in 2050 event is an event at St Marks School, Hounslow. During the full day event, 190 year 8 students explored, with a helping hand from 14 IMechE volunteers, ways to mitigate the effects of or adapt to climate change over the next 40 years by using their engineering creativity. The ideas and designs that the student came up with ranged from hydrogen powered jet packs to underground water-slide transport systems and floating cities on the ocean after the polar ice caps have melted. The final winners however were a decentralised anaerobic digester for heating homes and schools and an international Maglev mass transport train system. Both the students and volunteers greatly enjoyed the day. 9 2.4 Speak Out for Engineering The competition is organised annually by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers Volunteer Network. It was originally established in 1964 to challenge young engineers to prove that they could communicate effectively, which is still an important area for today s developing engineers. In 1977 Her Majesty gave permission for the competition to be known as The Queen s Silver Jubilee Competition (QSJ). The Competition has been adapted over the course of time to allow for greater participation, but the original theme of communicating effectively still remains the emphasis of the competition and in 2004 changed its name to Speak Out for Engineering Presentation Competition (SOFE). The SOFE competition offers students and early-career engineers a platform for demonstrating their understanding of the importance of engineering. It is increasingly important for engineers to speak out to ensure that rationality is heard within political and other determining processes. It is specifically concerned with verbal and visual communication in describing and explaining technical subjects. It is also designed to promote interest in the art of communication.
