3 Project Updates - Water Nebaj, Guatemala The UWM students have been very busy getting organized. They have established their chapter on campus and have already identified two projects. The hospital in Negaj currently is lacking waste water treatment. The hospital is concerned that a typhoid outbreak contributed to an epidemic downstream. The UWM team will perform a site assessment and work with the hospital to improve its treatment system. If you are interested in helping out on the mentoring team, please contact John Isleb at John.Isleb@earthtech.com The community of Quejchip, Guatemala is lacking drinking water for its 360 members. The UWM students are designing a spring fed water supply system, including a conduction line, distribution tank and distribution system. They are working to implement Phase I of their design in June under the mentorship of Chip Wall. 8 Engineers Without Borders Wisconsin Professional Partners Chapter Newsletter September 2008 WATER SUPPLY La Garrucha, Guatemala Marquette University started construction in June on this drinking water project for the 1500 residents of La Garrucha. Several members of the design team have spent time this summer on site with Amy Mikus, recent Marquette University graduate, spending the entire summer assisting with the construction. The project includes over 20 miles of pipeline, three sectors, three distribution tanks and 20 break pressure tanks! The scheduled completion date is January and a slow sand filter treatment system will likely follow in Phase II. If you are interested in helping, contact Mike at mpaddock@ch2m.com HONDURAS WATER SUPPLY We are currently working to identify a project in Honduras to take on. Two potential projects are being considered thus far. The first is a water project located in the municipality of Quimistan, Department of Santa Barbara and the second is a water/sanitation/road improvement project in Sabana Grande, Department of Olancho. Both of these projects would be affiliated with the Red Solidaria, which is an institution that identifies villages around Honduras that have more than 50% of families living under the extreme poverty line of less than $1 per day. PROJECT UPDATES - ENERGY HYDROELECTRIC PROJECT - LA PROVIDENCIA, GUATEMALA The Marquette Chapter is moving forward with a project that will generate hydroelectric power for the community of La Providencia. The project is in the design phase, with Tom Zalewski being our lead mentor. The first phase of implementation occurred in May. In January, the team hopes to complete the penstock and install the turbine. If you are willing to help out, please contact Tom Zalewski at Tom.Zalewski@earthtech.com. Stay tuned for more. If you are interested in working on a potable water project, now is a great time to jump in from the beginning. Contact Meghan for more info at meghan.wahlstromramler@ch2m.com. 9 Engineers Without Borders Wisconsin Professional Partners Chapter Newsletter September 2008 PROJECT UPDATES - BRIDGES BRIDGE PROJECT AT CUARTO CENTRO DE ESTANZUELA The MSOE EWB student chapter has been actively working on this project that will construct a vehicular bridge over the Rio Temal in central Guatemala. Cuarto Centro de Estanzuela is a community of about 140 families, mostly farmers, who are isolated from the main roadways serving the nearby regional trading city of Joyabaj during the rainy season. The project was approved by EWB this past spring after initial reconnaissance trips conducted by WPP members in 2007 and early 2008 confirmed the necessity and viability of the project. MSOE student Michelle Mellenthin is the project manager. A veteran of two previous EWB- MSOE projects in Guatemala, Michelle has been doing a stellar job of managing the initial student design teams. To date approximately 20 students have been actively participating in the project. About a dozen WPP members have signed up to assist with mentoring the students through the development process and faculty advisor Doug Stahl has been instrumental in helping keep the project on track. In early August students presented preliminary designs, cost estimates and construction schedules for four structural alternatives, and after discussion with the professional mentors, a concrete castin-place T-beam structure type was selected for final design. The bridge will be a single span with total length of 59 feet. Design on that alternative is proceeding and logistics are starting to take place for three groups to head to Guatemala in early 2009 to construct the project. An initial group will go there in early January to work on the abutments. A second group in late January will work on the T-beams, and a third group consisting of the students, faculty advisor Doug Stahl, and three mentors in late February/early March will complete the deck and remainder of the structure. Doug also just returned from a 5-day trip to the site in early August during which he obtained additional site soils and survey information and discussed the construction cost sharing agreement with the village and the municipality. As is typical for a bridge project of this size and type, both of those entities will provide support in terms of labor, provision of some of the construction materials, and construction of the roadway modifications to connect the bridge to the existing roadway system. PAGE 3 OF 4

10 Engineers Without Borders Wisconsin Professional Partners Chapter Newsletter September 2008 (Continued from Page 3) Fundraising for the project is going very well, but funding is always needed.
