Monaghan PPN are hosting a Community Training Week that takes place from Thursday 20 th October to Thursday 27 th October This training has been organised to begin the process of developing the capacity of our Monaghan PPN member groups. Thanks to those who took part in our survey we have now compiled a training programme based on what you told us you wanted. All of our member groups are invited to participate. You can attend all of the sessions if you wish or choose which sessions are most relevant to the needs of your group. John Lonergan entered the prison service in 1968 and in the years that followed, as he saw human nature at its worst - and often, unexpectedly, at its best. He developed a deep understanding both of human nature and of Irish society. Now, after 42 years in the service, 24 of them as the most senior prison officer in the country, John tells his fascinating life story - from his idyllic childhood in rural Tipperary, to coming face to face with the darkest aspects of Irish life, to grappling with the politics of working in a service that was the plaything of officials and politicians.

5 New 500,000 fund available to improve access to angling facilities Inland Fisheries Ireland invites applications for funding from the public A new fund to support projects that will contribute to the delivery of an accessible and sustainable, world class inland fisheries resource has been established. Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI) has announced an overall Capital Works Fund of 500,000 available for angling groups and clubs who are looking to improve access and infrastructure for angling. The fund is aimed specifically at capital improvement works with grants available to all groups and individuals including local development associations, tidy towns, angling clubs and others looking to improve access to angling. The types of projects eligible for funding must provide for public access and include the following: Clearing and fencing along rivers/ lakes to allow access for angling Abled and disabled friendly angling stands Car parks to improve access for anglers (new car parks and upgrades to existing carparks) Applications for funding should be submitted via the online application form available at Applications will be evaluated in light of the objectives of Inland Fisheries Ireland s National Strategy for Angling Development which aims to make angling accessible and attractive through information, infrastructure and support, to develop tourism through the promotion of angling and to establish recognition of angling as an important leisure and recreational pursuit. 6 HERITAGE COUNCIL LAUNCHES REPS4 TRADITIONAL FARM BUILDINGS GRANT SCHEME 2017 The Heritage Council has today launched its GLAS Traditional Farm Buildings Grant Scheme for The scheme is designed to provide assistance to those GLAS farmers involved in conserving and securing Ireland s traditional farm buildings. The scheme which is as the result of a partnership between The Heritage Council and the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine offers grants for approved conservation works to the exterior of farm outbuildings as well as associated structures such as historic yard surfaces, walls, and gates. The maximum grant available is circa 25,000 while the smallest grant available is 4,000. We strongly encourage and support farmers to carry out at least some of the repairs themselves. By connecting owners with their buildings in this way it enhances their hands on knowledge to continue repairs to the building well into the future, as well as other buildings on the farm. It also provides a means of employment in rural areas for local contractors, many of whom have had the opportunity to upskill under the scheme, increasing the availability of these craft skills in the local area, advised Meenan. 9 What can Monaghan Volunteer Centre do for your organisation? Monaghan Volunteer Centre is now ten years old and a huge number of voluntary organisations and volunteers have registered with us in that time. We thought it might be a good time to remind everyone of the services we provide: Recruiting New Volunteers Once your organisation is registered with Monaghan Volunteer Centre you can list a volunteer opportunity on our website. People interested in volunteering can browse the website by location or type of role. We can also include your volunteer role in our Facebook and Twitter posts and our monthly newsletter which goes to over 1,000 people. Advertising with us is a great way to reach new volunteers who might not have heard about your volunteer role otherwise. Our registered volunteers are all ages, from teenagers to retired people, and from all kinds of backgrounds. Whatever your role, there s a good chance someone registered with us will have an interest. This service is totally free of charge for both the organisation and the volunteer. Garda Vetting We provide a Garda vetting service for small organisations who do not have a Liaison Person of their own. A Liaison Person is someone trained by the Garda Vetting Bureau to use the vetting system. We use the Garda Vetting Bureau s online vetting system which is much faster than the paper based system. We provide all the information and documents your organisation needs for vetting and can answer your questions about the process. There is a charge of 5 for each application.

10 Training Monaghan Volunteer Centre runs a Volunteer Management Training Programme once each year. It is generally run over two full days. Details and dates will be sent to all our contacts by . We can also provide guidance and information on a range of issues related to managing volunteers. For example, recruitment of volunteers, how to motivate volunteers, dealing with difficult situations etc. This support is available on request so please feel free to contact us by phone or by . Who We Work With Monaghan Volunteer Centre will work with any not-for-profit organisation this includes charities, community groups, sports clubs and statutory organisations such as nursing homes, schools, hospitals, etc. We will not seek volunteers for individuals or for for-profit organisations.
