DISTRICT TRAINING SESSION SCHEDULED: Don t forget to sign up for the FREE training session scheduled for Saturday, September 17 from 10am until 3 pm at the Earle Baum Center, 4539 Occidental Rd in Santa Rosa. This session is being hosted by our GMT/GLT Leadership team coordinators, Sandra Stevens and PDG Barry Fredenburg. The training will include breakout sessions for president, secretary and treasurer trainings and will be followed by presentations on membership and leadership ideas. This session is open to all interested Lions and promises to be packed with valuable information. PDG Barry says that the agenda will be circulated shortly and lunch will be provided 2

3 Hi Lions and Lioness, VISITATIONS - I'm well into club visitations & have already visited clubs from the Sacramento River to Humboldt County. Every club has been so very welcoming. This week I visited UKIAH HOST, ANDERSON VALLEY, ROUND VALLEY Lions, as well as ROUND VALLEY LIONESS. If any of you know Round Valley area, the road is a 'bit scary' up from Hwy 101. But it was well worth the trip to meet Lions from a beautiful part of the country. They told me about this weekend's BLACKBERRY FESTIVAL and later on this year, the annual RODEO. When I arrived the Lioness were working hard, making cotton candy and other goodies to sell at the Blackberry Festival. Can you believe these ladies have baked as many as 250 blackberry pies to sell at this event! We sat outside just chatting, and I left there with such a good feeling. I won't be Governor for next year s festival but I want to go and experience their hospitality, even with that drive! They have a small motel so visitors can stay overnight if they want to. The week before, I visited VACAVILLE ULATIS, PETALUMA 711, COTATI and SEBASTOPOL-GRAVENSTEIN. Again, so welcoming. COG INFO - Last weekend I attended the quarterly Council of Governors meeting, where I've now graduated, as District Governor, to 'the front row'!! I started as a 2nd VDG, sitting in the 'back row'! We discussed a lot of things and made decisions as Governors for the first time. The Centennial International convention was discussed, membership/leadership, and the subject for the STUDENT SPEAKER contest next year. We had several choices, submitted by Lions all over the multiple district & after much discussion our choice was: 'IS THE RIGHT TO PRIVACY A THREAT TO OUR NATIONAL SECURITY?' As a group, we get along very well, and have become friends. 15 DG's from all over the state, a very diverse group, with 10 men and 5 women. By the way did you know Lions International has their FIRST WOMAN VP - Lion Gudrun from Iceland!!! THE CENTENNIAL CHALLENGE - Clubs around the world have already served 100 MILLION PEOPLE so the target has been increased to 200 MILLION! I know we can do it too! Clubs are increasingly participating in the challenge. One of the problems has been incorrect reporting. As you report 'Activities' you should also report them as Centennial challenge events if they are related to YOUTH, HUNGER, and VISION & ENVIRONMENT. IT DOESN'T HAVE TO BE SPECIALLY ORGANIZED EVENT - just one related to the 4 areas of service indicated above. EG. Your club volunteered on Earth Day to collect trash in your neighborhood/town - that counts toward the Centennial Challenge under ENVIRONMENT. Or your club served hotdogs at the High School football game - that counts under YOUTH. CENTENNIAL BANNER PATCHES - They will be presented at the DISTRICT MEETING on AUGUST 27th in NAPA. More clubs have earned 4 star patches this time after realizing they were already participating in the event, just not reporting it! LEADERSHIP INSTITUTES - The institutes will take place in SACRAMENTO and ONTARIO, CA this year. SACRAMENTO - JANUARY 14-16, 2017 ONTARIO - MARCH 4-6, Please note that 50% of the $300 COST WILL BE PAID BY THE DISTRICT, and if clubs can also help, that s a good investment in your own club! It s a 3 day seminar, and everyone who's attended, speaks very highly of the experience. LAKE COUNTY FIRE UPDATE - An EMERGENCY GRANT WAS APPROVED by LCIF (Lions Clubs International Foundation) to help the victims. The guidelines are very strict as to how the money can be spent and clubs in Lake County have been notified! I've asked every club in the district to help, and have already received an offer from WILLITS LIONS to do food service for people. COBB MOUNTAIN Lions have clothes and shoes left from last years fires, so that information has been distributed. Hundreds of homes have burned to the ground, so these residents are hurting! We can all do something and every offer of help will mean a lot! Lion Audrey/DG/C2 3

4 Dear Lion, As we approach our Centennial in 2017, we have so much to celebrate. This once-in-alifetime event commemorates not just our association, but every Lion and club who has made a difference in the world. No matter where you are, there s an opportunity for each and every Lion to join the celebration. I encourage you to join the Celebration by supporting our three signature programs: Lead through service by hosting youth, vision, hunger and environmental projects to help us reach our Centennial Service Challenge goal of helping 100+ million people. Set a goal of hosting at least 1 service project for each. Invite for impact by asking family, friends and neighbors to serve with you as Lions, and you ll earn recognition in the Centennial Celebration Membership Awards. Set a goal of adding 3 new members. Connect with community by planning a Legacy Project that commemorates the Centennial and provides a lasting gift to your community. Let s work together to show the world that where there s a need, there s a Lion! 4

5 Join the Centennial Celebration! The Centennial Celebration brings Lions together to celebrate 100 years of life-changing humanitarian service. Starting with the kickoff in July 2014 and ending in June 2018, Lions around the world are joining in the celebration by expanding our community impact through service projects and inspiring others to join in that service. Clubs play a critical role in the success of the Centennial. This guide will help you to plan your club s service and celebration. Our global Centennial Celebration is founded on three themes: LEAD THROUGH SERVICE Lions Clubs International was built upon two words: "We Serve". Service to others is one of the highlights of our Centennial Celebration. All clubs are called to accept the Centennial Service Challenge to collectively help 100 million people in four areas of focus - youth, vision, hunger & environment. INVITE FOR IMPACT To meet the increasing needs of our communities, membership must grow. For every new member, we can impact the lives of 30 people. New Lions will ensure our place as the global leader in humanitarian service for the next 100 years. CONNECT WITH COMMUNITY As Lions we identify community needs and take action to meet those needs. During the Centennial, clubs are encouraged to strengthen their community bonds by implementing a Community Legacy Project that provides a visible and long-lasting impact. Timeline To connect with each theme, Lions are encouraged to participate in various activities, highlighted in the timeline below, throughout the Centennial. Our District Leadership team, PDG Barry Fredenburg and Sandra Stevens are in the process of organizing a training session for club and cabinet officers as well as those aspiring to take on a leadership role in your Lions club in the future. This will be an opportunity to have your questions answered and to share ideas with your fellow Lions. Lunch will be provided for all those in attendance. More information will be provided at the first cabinet meeting on Saturday, August 27 in Napa. As the time draws near, we will need a head count from each club so that we can plan accordingly. 8 LEF PRESENTS CHECK FOR $340, OOO FOR PURCHASE OF EQUIPMENT & FURNATURE AT THE NEW LIONS EYE CLINIC At the annual LEF membership meeting on July 23, 2016, the Board of Trustees approved the donation of $340,000 toward the purchase of equipment & furniture at 711 Van Ness, San Francisco. This purchase is in addition to the purchase of two lasers for the new clinic. LEF plans to move there by November 1, 2016! 9 Dear District Governor Wottrich: LCIF Chairperson Yamada has awarded an emergency grant (EMR15302/4 C2) in the amount of US$10,000 to assist the Lions of District 4-C2 with wildfire relief activities. A grant check will be prepared and sent to the district. Until it arrives, you may use district funds to carry out the relief efforts. Your contact person at LCIF is Wesley Gathings, Regional Program Specialist, who can be reached at Wesley.Gathings@lionsclubs.org Please contact him with any questions regarding the use of the funds. The final report should be sent to his attention at Lions Clubs International Foundation, 300 W. 22nd Street, Oak Brook, IL Please reference grant EMR15302/4 C2 on all reporting documents. Please remember that according to the board-established grant criteria, emergency grant funds must be used only to provide basic necessities -- such as food, clothing, blankets, bottled water, and medical supplies for those affected by the disaster. The LCIF funds may not be used to rebuild damaged structures or to provide housing for disaster victims. The amount of the grant is not sufficient to meet these needs and, in addition, other relief organizations and government agencies are better positioned to address such longer-term needs. Please note the following: If the grant funds are used for ineligible expenditures or handed over to another organization, the district will be asked to reimburse this amount to LCIF. Please contact LCIF if there are any questions regarding what qualifies as an eligible expenditure or an approved plan of action for the use of the grant funds. Please ensure that all payments above the local equivalent of US$200 are made by account payee check only to the concerned suppliers. Cash payments should be strictly avoided and if at all made for amounts less than US$200, they should be duly supported with official paid receipts. In the absence of the same the final report will not be processed and the district will be required to return the grant funds. Emergency grant recipients are obligated to use grants funds for their original intended purpose within 30 days of receipt of the grant unless given an extension by LCIF. The grant must be used within this time period, immediately after which the district receiving the grant shall send LCIF any unused funds and a detailed grant report of how the funds were expended, along with appropriate receipts and supporting documentation. Outstanding final reports may delay the application process of subsequent requests. LCIF requires that photographs of the Emergency grant relief work activities be submitted along with the grant final report. These photos should show Lions in action providing the relief and also substantiate both the level of financial expenditure on immediate needs relief goods and the number of beneficiaries of the relief activities. Failure to submit photos demonstrating these various qualities may impede the acceptance of the grant final report and its closure. Remember that in terms of financial accounting at the district level, the LCIF grant should be noted in the district accounts, so that the income and expenditures can be included when the accounts are audited at the end of the year. The final report should be reviewed and approved by the District Cabinet prior to the report being sent to LCIF. This report should include copies of the district s bank account statement showing the expenditures made by check. The Emergency Grant Final Report Form is attached. Yours in Lionism, Lion Bob Reuther PDG 4c2 Coordinator Fund Raising New This Year: Contributing Membership donations will count toward the Melvin Jones Fellowship. To become a Contributing Member, a Lion donates $20, $50 or $100 for the year to LCIF sending it in with the completed Contributing Membership form. The member receives a pin recognizing the contribution. LCIF keeps a record of the contributions. When they reach $1000, a Melvin Jones Fellowship is awarded. If every member of a club contributes at least $20 and all contributions are sent in together with the names of all contributors, the club becomes a 100% donor club and receives a patch for that year, To continue at the 100% level, a club needs to involve any new members as they join and to repeat the contributions each year. Club LCIF Representative New This Year: The LCIF Board of Trustees is asking District Coordinators to seek an LCIF Representative in each club in his/her district. This volunteer is responsible for keeping club members informed on Foundation programs and for promoting contributions. It is hoped that the Representative will encourage clubs to strive for 100% donor status. The District coordinator is expected to provide training and support for the Club Representatives. Your MD4-California LCIF Coordinator is prepared to visit districts to help train Club Representatives. 12

15 Dear Lion: Lions serve in a variety of ways. With any service to the public, safety is of the utmost importance. In the case of an accident or any unfortunate event, a club may be held legally responsible. Originally adopted by the U.S. Congress in 1997, the Volunteer Protection Act (VPA) provides liability protection from claims that might be filed against a nonprofit organization s individual volunteers. In the Act s current form, however, protection from liability does not extend to the organization itself, including Lions clubs. Currently before Congress is another bill called the Volunteer Organization Protection Act or VOPA. This Act would amend the VPA to extend liability protection that s already given to individual volunteers to organizations as well. We need your help in moving VOPA forward; contact your representative in support of VOPA! 16 MONTGOMERY VILLAGE Well, after my year as District Governor for 4-C2, I was asked, and accepted the assignment to Chair the upcoming Club Polenta Feed Fundraiser!! It's so much fun to be back in action at the Club level, and able to continue having the honor to work with our Montgomery Village Lions Club members. You are the BEST!! And OCTOBER 14, 2016 is the date! As Chair, it's my job to ask each one of you for your help in making this a successful event. That's the best part of being Chair of any project---you get to talk to everyone!! The tickets are printed and some were distributed at our last meeting. I'll have them with me at our next meeting, so please see me to get them. The cooks, Lions Frank Bastoni and Loyde Johnson assure me that 200 guests can be served at the Holy Spirit Church Hall, and they are looking forward to making the usual outstanding dinner for all SELL, SELL, SELL tickets!! Only $17 each, by the way---what a bargain!! Of course there will be a RAFFLE for which we need raffle prizes, and Lion Bob Zie is helping with that part of the event---ask, ASK, ASK for prizes from any and all folks you do business with or are possibly related to. 18 FAIRFIELD HOST LIONS President Lion Francisco with Guest Ron Lanza and Lion Nancy at the Fairfield HOST Lions Wednesday August 17 th Meeting. Ron is a local Farmer and Winemaker (Wooden Valley) and talked about the Winemaking Industry in our local area. 18

19 Hello Humboldt Region Lions, Cyndi and I recently attended a Fortuna Eel River Lions meeting where they were discussing participation in this STOMP Out Epilepsy and SUDEP family walk on September 24 at Blue Lake Casino. The discussion then turned to the possibility of having more of the Humboldt Region Lions participate. Registration for each walker is currently $25. What I am going to propose to my club on Wednesday is possibly donating $100 toward this project. That would cover 4 walkers on the day of the event. If our clubs were able to join in, Lions would be a more visible presence at the event. This would also be a way for our clubs to support the newest club in our Region. There is also another way to support them without walking if you would prefer not to. The $25 price per walker is being honored until August 27, then it will go up to $30 each. 20 President s Message GRAVENSTEIN LIONS We ended last year with about 30 Lions & Scouts contributing over 80 person hours to Sonoma County Regional Park s Ragle Park Oak Tree Project. We built a split-rail fence around a heritage oak and fenced and mulched about 15 newly planted oak saplings as our Centennial Community Legacy Project. GREAT JOB, EVERYONE! And this year is starting off GANGBUSTERS! Our annual Fireworks Booth fundraiser raised the most funds ever! We ll have a big pot of money to assist our various community partners in the coming months. I represented our club (Silver Sponsor) at the Disability Services & Legal Center s Music in the Vines on July 14 th. Lions Mike Mortensson & Michael Stanford helped with chores at the event. Thanks, guys! On August 10 th we welcomed District Governor Audrey Wottrich on her official visit. Be sure to attend to learn about District programs. This month will also mark the start of the Lions Chain Gang at Analy High football games. We close the month with the District Cabinet Meeting on Aug. 27 in Napa. I encourage all club members to attend. In closing, ask a potential member to help us help others in need WE SERVE! 23 FAIRFIELD HOST LIONS Fairfield Host Lions are participating in a Health Fair. I've attached the flyer in case you know anyone who would be interested. Audrey/DG Our club has again been asked to participate in the District Attorney's Office Family Law Department's Health Fair this year. Our Club's Board of Directors approved this request this afternoon. The Health Fair will be held on Saturday October 15th between 10 AM and 2 PM. We will be providing eye testing using the "Spot Vision" device. This year I hope to partner up with either the Salvation Army or the County Health Department and house our part of this operation out of one of their large mobile buses so we don't have the problems that we had last year with too much light interfering with the testing. I will be putting out a sign up for volunteers approx. a month prior to this event, but please save the date if you can. Flyer for this event is attached. Any questions please contact me. Leo 23

27 SCHOOL SUPPLIES FOR LOWER LAKE Here is my bounty. I think I easily purchased $ worth of supplies with my $ budget. (all those bags are full and there are 8 backpacks) I have been in contact with Bryce Brine who is Vice Principal of Lower Lake Elementary. He said he would ask his Principal for ideas about publicly. He put me in touch with Lisa Rogers who lives near Middletown and I have arraigned to meet her there on Wednesday afternoon. Her classroom was one of the outbuildings that was damaged in the fire. She is also the teacher in charge of the garden that the kids tend. They lost the shed full of tools but she was thrilled to see the garden untouched. She also works with the Red Cross and is happy to make the transfer of supplies at Twin Pine Casino so she can look in on her families that are being housed there". I think she would be a great contact person for Audrey to find out what could be done on the district level. I think we should post something on Facebook and maybe a Letter to the Editor challenging other service clubs to help out the school. 85% of the students were socio-economically challenged BEFORE the fire so they need all the help than can get. 28 Lions Clubs International Foundation C2 RECAP OF LCIF ACTIVITIES Valley Fire Emergency Grant - $10,000 Roseland Schools Quest Grant - $10, of 56 Clubs donation - $12, C2 LCIF ACTIVITIES Clayton Fire Emergency Grant - $10,000 Donation: Two of the 56 Clubs donated - $ MD4 LCIF ACTIVITY Emergency $10,000 grants were given to C2, A2, C6, and L1 Melvin Jones Eligibility WHAT S NEW Contributing Member New this year: Contributing Membership donations will count toward the Melvin Jones Fellowship. To become a Contributing Member, a Lion donates $20, $50 or $100 for the year to LCIF and sends it in with the completed Contributing Membership form. The member receives a Lions pin recognizing the contribution. LCIF needs your Name and Club to identify you. LCIF accepts cash, checks, money orders, VISA, Master Card, and American Express LCIF keeps a record forever of the contributions. When they reach $1000, a Melvin Jones Fellowship is awarded. 28

29 Measles Initiative The Measles Initiative of varying amounts qualifies for donation of that amount. The Measles Initiative receives a Measles Lions Pin 100% Clubs If every member of a club contributes at least $20 and all contributions are sent in together with the names of all contributors, the club becomes a 100% donor club and receives a patch for that year. To continue at the 100% level, a club needs to involve any new members as they join and to repeat the contributions each year. Club LCIF Representative New This Year: The LCIF Board of Trustees is asking District Coordinators to seek an LCIF representative in each club. This volunteer/representative is responsible for keeping club members informed on Foundation programs and for promoting contributions. The representative s role is to encourage clubs to strive for 100% donor status. The District Coordinator is expected to provide training and support for the Club Representatives. 30 FIRST VDG LES MIZE It seems like the Convention in May was yesterday. The year is going by at a fast pace. I would like to thank the District for honoring me when you elected me as your 1st Vice District Governor. I have enjoyed visiting many clubs with DG Audrey & Lion Brian. I feel that the DG, myself & Barry as 2nd VDG are very compatible & work together very well. Moving up the ladder to 1st VDG is scary in that in less than a year, I will be the District Gov. of 4C2. This is a dream I have had for some 30 years. Now the time is coming. I have been attending the Council of Governors meetings & learning all about how the entire Lions Organization works. It is a lot of work & time but I feel I will be well trained to lead our District. I have been a Lion in our District for over 51 years and have served under just as many District Governors. Some very good & others that possibly could have done better. My turn is approaching & I look forward to the challenge. DG Audrey likes the ask One Program. If we all could increase the club membership by 1 member at the end of the year, we will have a net of some 56 or 57 new members in our District. I will continue pushing that same program. We must remember that we need to continue to replace those that have past or moved away or left Lions for some reason. Please keep your members engaged & working on your club projects and or fund raisers. Remember to get your club involved with other groups & organizations in your Community. This is always a magnate to attract new Members. Instead of you having to ask someone if they might have an interest in joining your club, let them ask you how they can join. The Spot Vision Program is also another way of finding prospective members. I would hope that all our clubs are involved in this program. You do not need to be a large club in numbers to handle the Spot Vision Program. Some of the success stories come from the smaller clubs. One Question that I would like to ask every club. If your club were to go away, would the community miss you? Think about it. As Salesmen for the past 46 years, I have been successful because I believe in my product & the Company I worked for. With Lions, it is the same thing. What do we do? How can we make a difference? Yes, we have New Mountains to Climb. We have our Pride. If there is a need, there is a Lion. Our organization is starting to celebrate 100 years of serving our communities. 30

31 We all joined the Lion's Club for a common purpose & that s To Serve. We should all remember that & when we come together at our meetings & projects, we must remember that personal differences and how we conduct ourselves is so important. As your 1st VDG, I ask that any of you that has problems within your clubs, to call me or DG Audrey or 2nd VDG Barry. We are here to help. I see no reason that our District cannot grow by some 15 to 20 percent in the next year or 2. We have a product 2nd to none & an active group of Lions whom take Pride in what they do. Thank you for attending the 1 st Cabinet Meeting of the year in Napa this past weekend. I continue to meet other Lions our District & look forward to meeting all of you over the next year or two. 32 REDWOOD EMPIRE LIONS CLUB On September 17th we will have a booth at the Rising Stars Music Competition at the Plaza. We will only have popcorn, soft drinks and water, but I understand it will be a 12 hour day, so we will need a bunch of people to help. It should also be a lot of fun. Speaking of fun, get ready to have lots on September 25th when Sheryl and Fred are having their Region and Zone Pizza Party (meeting), at the Lorenzi s. Our Governor, Audrey Wottrich, has agreed to make it her Official Visit so it our hope that members of the Region 2, Zones 1 and 2 will help our club make this a memorable occasion. If you have ever been to a Pizza Party at Bonnie and Marlin s you know how much fun it can be. Talk it up so we can have a good turnout. On October 2nd we hope to have a room at the Health Fair at Grace Hudson School to have out Spot Camera to do Vision Screening. More info as time goes on. 34 Hi Lions, it s me again!! One of the things I'm asked as I do club visitations is how clubs increase membership can. This latest message from the International President addresses this very subject. One thing I can stress is when you think of someone you think would make a good Lion, don't invite them to a meeting! They can be boring, members arguing etc etc., so ask the person to help on a project. They will see what Lions do and also see the effect it has on the general public. They will be more likely to join your club after volunteering than if they attend a club meeting. Another thing your club should arrange as soon as possible is a visit from the Global Membership Team (GMT), and the Global Leadership Team (GLT). Maybe this can be done at your club meeting, or better still, have a group of clubs join together for a presentation. The chairpersons, Lions Barry Fredenburg and Sandra Stevens will inspire your members to go out and bring in a new member or two! Finally, please note: WORLDWIDE WEEK OF SERVICE FOR SIGHT - OCTOBER 10-16th. Have your own club/zone/region project related to sight - VISION SCREENING, COLLECTING EYEGLASSES are two examples. Another suggestion would be an EYEGLASS-WASHING EVENT. If any of you have been to the warehouse in Vallejo where all the eyeglasses collected go to be cleaned, you may have either seen or participated in one of the sessions. Thanks for listening.
