1 Washington Chapter Chat WASHINGTON STATE CHAPTER 2015 OFFICERS President Cheral Manke, CPPO, Vice President Sue Ownby Treasurer Josh Klika Secretary Jeff Peterson Membership Secretary Theresa Teschlog Past President Nelson Park, CPPO, Educa tion Calen dar April 2015 The Excellence in Procurement Summit was excellent! 100 procurement professionals gathered at the beautiful Bellevue Botanical Gardens to network and attend some invaluable training! We started off the morning presenting Heidi Bohl, (who recently retired from DES) with a Distinguished Service Award! I chose Heidi for this award because of her tireless work and dedication to our chapter. She continues to contribute and create our newsletter even after her retirement! Now that's dedication! Dr. Kenneth Sullivan, Associate Professor from the School of Sustainable Engineering and the Built Environment at Arizona State University presented Best Value Procurement" in the morning, then rounded off the afternoon with "Best Value Leadership and Implementation". Hopefully we'll hear more in the future! Cheral Inside this I ssue Member Spotlight Procurement Summit Recap Procurement Month Celebration Article of the Month 2015 NIGP Forum and more 1
2 Member Spotlight NAME: Linda J. Hodgson, NIGP CHAPTER MEMBER SINCE: Current Chair of the WA Chapter s Policy Advisory Committee. PERSONAL STATS: I was born in Portland, to an Oregon State Beaver and a University of Oregon Duck, and am the oldest of three children (all girls - all with names starting with L!). In 2006 I transplanted to the Capitol City where I live with my husband and two cute rescue mutts (an Australian Cattle Dog-mix named Rex, and Snowball, a Terrier-mix). I love to travel, hike, and explore our gorgeous national parks typically with my camera, my spouse and our fur-children! EMPLOYED BY: HOW LONG: Central Contracts and Legal Services, WA State Department of Social and Health Services Over 8 years with the State: 6+ years at DSHS; 2+ years at DES WHAT DO LIKE ABOUT YOUR JOB: I truly enjoy supporting my customers and our mission to transform lives. Through interaction with my customers, I continue to learn about new (and cool!) things our agency does to help communities throughout Washington State. In my current role as Contracts Consultant at DSHS Headquarters, I instruct contracting classes, offer procurement advice on laws and policies, and assist our Programs in the development of robust contracts and administer successful solicitations. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE SOMEONE NEW TO YOUR PROFESSION? I ve been fortunate to work in procurement, in the private and public sectors, a majority of my career. I ve found this line of work to be both interesting and challenging (I am never bored!). Besides gaining knowledge through experience, continuing education, i.e. through studying for certification, is also very important. I highly recommend someone new to our profession (or not, for that matter!) to get involved with NIGP and other professional organizations. By doing so you can meet folks within our field, learn from them, and through the numerous educational events offered. 2
3 Procurement Summit This year s Procurement Summit was held on March 24, 2015 at the beautiful Bellevue Community Gardens in Bellevue Washington. Presentations by Dr. Kenneth Sullivan, Associate Professor, School of Sustainable Engineering & the Built Environment Arizona State University Dr. Kenneth Sullivan, Associate Professor from the School of Sustainable Engineering and the Built Environment at Arizona State University presented "Best Value Procurement" in the morning, then rounded off the afternoon with "Best Value Leadership and Implementation". Besides being one of the funniest people we've had present in a long time, the content could very likely change the way a lot of us do business! Due to the large number of requests for the slides used in the presentations, Dr. Sullivan provided the following link where you may access and download the slides. You may contact Jeff Sawyer, Director of Strategic Engagement (Jeff.Sawyer@asu.edu) to assist with any additional information or questions. Working with organizations to improve project delivery is what they are known for. Please feel free to contact them if you are interested in using some of these concepts and tools within your organization. 3

7 BY JOSH KLIKA DES A wall taken from a presentation created by a coworker and myself highlighting the inventory training. Have you made a procurement you consider to be interesting or done a project that you think is cutting edge? If the answer is Yes, do you have a plan to show it off? I offer the suggestion of Building Your Wall. The concept is simple but can be powerful. First, you need a photo. Of course, a camera is not even necessary to do this anymore, as any smartphone will do. Next, create a file for any site visits or trainings you conduct. I recommend naming each event in the folder, as once you get going because the file will be a big one. The last step, assign someone as your photo person before the event starts. (Here in my office, we usually tag our newest hire with this duty; I held this honor for two years) Once you have your wall started you now have: A photo collage to cycle on your screen saver to create a conversation for those that stop by your desk. Additions to a presentation when you are trying to interest new recruits to the office or the career field. A way to sit with executive management or your peers and personalize the discussion you are having with them on procurement or supply chain issues. Proof that you don t just push paper. Henry Ford had a great quote that makes this idea relevant: You can t build a reputation on what you are going to do. 7
