The mission of the Héma Québec Foundation is to provide financial support for the creation and development of innovative projects that will help to keep Héma Québec at the forefront of knowledge and services in all their areas of activity and expertise, allowing them to do more, do it better and do it faster.
Rolling up our sleeves, together! The Héma Québec Foundation relies on a strong community of people who are not afraid to roll up their sleeves, and I take great pride and pleasure in joining them. You are one of these exceptional people. As a donor, you allow us to help Héma Québec achieve their goals. You are a part of every innovative project and service we fund. Thank you! The Foundation owes a debt of gratitude to Ms. Monique Lefebvre, Chair of the Board of Directors, for her tremendous generosity and continued support. Her expertise in the area of governance and her ability to evaluate the key issues are invaluable assets. The dedication of each and every member of our Board is equally remarkable. It is thanks to them that we are able to ensure, day in, day out, that sound ethical decisions are made, and transparency rules. I would also like to highlight the long-time commitment of Dr. Francine Décary, President and Chief Executive Officer of Héma Québec until March 31, In sharing her vision with the members of the Board, she has infused us with a passion that will be her legacy. I would like to take this occasion to introduce Dr. Jean De Serres, President and Chief Executive Officer of Héma Québec as of April 1, When you read his message, you will see that he has big plans for us, and important projects in the works. Enjoy, and thank you for helping roll up our sleeves! Danielle Gabrielle Roy Executive Director ANNUAL REPORT
A word from our Chair Give life, differently! These three words effectively sum up the generosity of the donors and partners of the Héma Québec Foundation. Once again, I witnessed your willingness to rapidly respond to our call, and I thank you. Without your support, we would not have been as successful in helping Héma Québec. This annual report highlights the scope and impact of the activities carried out by the Héma Québec Foundation in In the following pages you will see that the Foundation financed a number of diverse projects, in response to an ever increasing need. Thanks to the individuals and corporations who support us, we can continue to efficiently promote the importance of giving blood, we can ensure that new blood donors are recruited, and we can help facilitate innovation, a trademark of Héma Québec. The staff at Héma Québec works tirelessly to efficiently provide adequate quantities of safe, optimal blood components and substitutes, human tissues, and cord blood to meet the needs of the Québec population. They also provide and develop specialized expertise, and innovative products and services in the fields of transfusion medicine and human tissue transplantation. Our sole reason for being is to help them carry out their mission even faster and more efficiently. We could not do it without your help, nor could we do it without our extraordinary volunteers, committee members and Board members. To all of you, a huge thank-you! Monique Lefebvre Chair of the Board of Directors 6 Héma-Québec FOUNDATION
A succesful partnership Do more. Do it better. Do it faster. This motto is at the heart of the valued partnership between our organization and the Héma Québec Foundation. Thanks to the Foundation s contribution, Héma Québec is able to do more research and equip itself with new and indispensable state-of-the-art equipment, examples of which are provided in this report. These initiatives contribute to helping Héma Québec achieve its basic mission of ensuring an adequate and safe supply of blood products, human tissues and stem cells. Among these initiatives is the funding of a study on a possible public breast milk bank project. The Foundation s contribution has thus allowed Héma Québec to take its mission a step further. Above all, the partnership with the Foundation is essential in allowing Héma Québec excel, innovate and position itself as a global leader in its field. In a very concrete way, donations made to the Foundation help us Give Life. Differently and Do more, faster! Thanks to your support, Héma Québec and the Foundation will continue their successful partnership throughout the coming year. Your contribution is vital to ensuring that the Foundation can help Héma Québec choose the best solutions and, ultimately, improve the health of Quebecers. Jean De Serres President and CEO of Héma Québec ANNUAL REPORT
ACTIVITY REPORT The Diamant rouge pour la vie gala On June 10, 2010, the Héma Québec Foundation held its annual fundraising gala at Espaces Dalhousie in Québec. Honorary Chair Diane Déry, of the National Bank Financial Group, presided over the event, which brought together 235 guests and raised $148,000 to support research at Héma Québec and finance the Apprentis en biosciences (bioscience apprentice) program at the INRS-Institut Armand-Frappier research centre. Robert Landry, member of the Board of the Foundation; Diane Déry, Honorary Chair of the event and Vice-President, Sales and Service, Commercial Banking, National Bank Financial Group; Daniel Coderre, Executive Director of the INRS; and Dr. Francine Décary, then President and Chief Executive Officer of Héma Québec. 8 Héma-Québec FOUNDATION

Funding many projects, thanks to you Year after year, in accordance with the strategic direction of Héma Québec, the Foundation takes responsibility for funding many projects and services, all of which have an impact on the health and well-being of the Québec population. Here are the projects that were made possible this year thanks to your donations.
To innovate
Study on the therapeutic potential of intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIg) in the treatment of Alzheimer s disease Researchers are studying the use of IVIg in the treatment of Alzheimer s, a disease that affects as many as 500,000 Canadians. Immunoglobulin, a blood protein, is vital to hundreds of patients with immune deficiencies and is used to fight several autoimmune disorders with rheumatic or neurological symptoms. However, if it is found that immunoglobulin is effective in treating Alzheimer s disease, the global supply will not be sufficient to meet the needs of the population. With support from the Foundation, Dr. Frédéric Calon of the Centre de Recherche du Centre hospitalier de l Université Laval (CHUL) and Renée Bazin and Isabelle St-Amour of the Research and Development division at Héma Québec are conducting research to understand how immunoglobulin works in Alzheimer s disease in an effort to find a way to reproduce its therapeutic effects without actually using it. The research is promising and will hopefully lead to meaningful discoveries. The Foundation is investing $160,000, $40,000 of which was spent this year, to continue trials. 12 Héma-Québec FOUNDATION
ANNUAL REPORT
Study for a public breast milk bank at Héma Québec Héma Québec is currently evaluating the possibility of launching a breast milk bank for Québec. Among other things, this project could increase the chances of survival for very premature babies, who cannot be breastfed by their mother. Héma Québec already has the tools to collect, analyze, store and distribute blood products, stem cells and human tissue throughout the province. They also manage the only cord blood bank in Québec. All this considered, Héma Québec is an obvious choice to manage a breast milk bank. A committee of experts has been mandated to determine what would be required to start a public breast milk bank in Québec, and to provide an evaluation of the costs of such a project. They will also look at what has been done in other parts of the world, particularly in Europe and the United States. The results of this study, financed by the Foundation at a cost of $66,000, will be handed over to Héma Québec in the spring of The ultimate decision will be made by the Ministère de la Santé et des Services sociaux. Chair in Transfusion Medicine Bayer and the Foundation have joined forces to financially support the Héma Québec Foundation Bayer Chair in Transfusion Medicine at the Université de Montréal, led by Dr. Jean-François Hardy. Blood products are increasingly being used in medicine and surgery for the treatment of major pathologies, including transplants, heart surgery, hematology-oncology, and in the delivery of emergency services. However, although doctors learn about these areas in their studies, there are few to no specific teaching programs on the optimal use of labile and stable blood products in Québec universities. Teaching the next generation how to use blood products as effectively as possible on a scientific, clinical and economic level is essential. The Faculty of Medicine at Université de Montréal agreed to develop such a program as part of a joint effort by Héma Québec, the Héma Québec Foundation, the Centre hospitalier de l Université de Montréal (CHUM), its foundation and other partners. This chair in transfusion medicine enables both the training of young doctors and the development of a research program geared toward gaining a better understanding of how blood products work, thereby resulting in better use of these products. This year again, the Foundation invested $200,000 in the Chair. Our total pledge is of $900,000, which we will have reached in By supporting this project, you are helping researchers, doctors and scientists to build their knowledge of blood transfusion practices. 14 Héma-Québec FOUNDATION
To provide adequate supplies
A second mobile blood collection unit for Héma Québec It is always a challenge to recruit and retain donors. In addition to growing their existing network, Héma Québec also has to find innovative ways to reach new donors. That s where the mobile blood collection unit comes in. GLOBULE, a mobile blood collection unit, is a completely autonomous blood collection site in and of itself, fully equipped with all the necessary equipment for running a blood drive. It provides a unique blood donation experience for Héma-Québec donors. The unit is financed through a $450,000 contribution by the Foundation ($90,000 per year for five years). This contribution is made possible thanks to RBC Royal Bank and Couche Tard. 16 Héma-Québec FOUNDATION
The purchase of a flow cytometer To allow Héma Québec to do more, do it better and do it faster, the Foundation occasionally finances new equipment for the blood product provider. At our Research and Development facility, certain analyses regularly had to be postponed and even cancelled due to the insufficient availability of a device called a flow cytometer. Having an additional flow cytometer for the team of researchers in Héma Québec s Research and Development division provided the significant advantage of allowing them to carry out more research activities in a shorter amount of time. The Foundation therefore funded the acquisition of a second cytometer this year. The base model was purchased for a cost of $50,000. This acquisition has resulted in increased availability of the device used for more complex analyses and the elimination of delays and postponements in the research activities that require this type of technology. ANNUAL REPORT
To promote blood donation
Creation of the Dr. Francine Décary Fund To celebrate the retirement and the extraordinary contribution of Dr. Francine Décary, President and CEO of Héma Québec from its creation in 1998 until March 2011, the Héma Québec Foundation created the Dr. Francine Décary Fund. To date, this fund has raised more than $125,000. For now, the sums generated by the Dr. Francine Décary Fund will primarily be used to promote the importance of giving blood. If this issue is a priority for you, as it is for Dr. Francine Décary, please consider directing your gift to this fund. The creation of the Dr. Francine Décary Fund was announced on March 8, From left to right : Monique Lefebvre, Chair of the Board of Directors of the Héma-Québec Foundation, Danielle Gabrielle Roy, Executive Director of the Foundation and Dr. Francine Décary. Vital support for the Association of Blood Donation Volunteers ASSOCIATION OF BLOOD DONATION VOLUNTEERS In , the Foundation continued to support the volunteers of the ABDV with a contribution of $115,000 to reinforce and promote the essential role they play in the blood collection process. Day after day, at each and every blood drive, ABDV volunteers are there, recruiting, greeting and even comforting blood donors. Without the amazing work they do to promote blood donation in universities, colleges and high schools, it would be far more difficult for Héma Québec to meet their goals and prepare for the future. That is why the Foundation will continue to support the activities of the ABDV, most notably through the memorial giving program, available in most funeral homes in Québec. ANNUAL REPORT
To ensure a qualified future generation
Training in erythrocyte serology Thanks to your generosity, Héma Québec was able to continue to offer training to blood bank technicians to expand their knowledge of the erythrocyte immunology issues they encounter in their laboratories. This year, the course has been offered online, through a new, user-friendly website. Altogether, thanks to a donation of nearly $35,000 by Talecris, 25 people completed the theoretical and practical training between April 1, 2010 and March 31, This website, whose development we funded, will allow many more technicians to receive training in the future. Support for the Apprentis en biosciences (bioscience apprentice) program at the INRS-Institut Armand-Frappier research centre To get high school students interested in science, and more specifically, to interest them in transfusion medicine, the Héma Québec Foundation decided to support the Apprentis en biosciences program at the INRS-Institut Armand-Frappier research centre. Twenty-five young people from the Québec region will be able to take part in this eye-opening program over the next five years. We hope to see some of them join our ranks in the future! Our participation in this program was made possible thanks to the generosity of a key partner, the National Bank Financial Group. ANNUAL REPORT
Financial Information RESULTS FOR In , the Foundation received close to 1.1 million dollars in donations. The positive investment performance allowed us to achieve solid results. A new strategic plan, aimed at diversifying our fundraising efforts, translated into a slight reduction in our revenues. Going forward, our focus will go beyond the Ball for Life, our flagship event, to include major gifts, planned giving and an annual campaign strategy. Lower expenses are also a reflection of the Foundation s strategic plan, and totalled $246,068 this year, compared to $314,042 last year. After accounting for the donations allocated to the various projects we support to allow Héma Québec to do more, do it better and do it faster, there was a surplus of $394, Revenues $1 238,317 $1 553,699 $654,220 Expenses $246,068 $314,042 $133,511 Excess of revenues over expenses before donations $992,248 $1 239,657 $520,709 Donations made - $597,699 - $590,456 - $400,591 Excess of revenues over expenses $394,549 $649,201 $120,118 Thanks to you, the Foundation allocated nearly $600,000 worth of donations for a second consecutive year! The Foundation s audited financial statements are available on request. 22 Héma-Québec FOUNDATION
FINANCIAL HEALTH The Foundation s financial health relies on a balance between, on the one hand, the return on assets, comprising surpluses accumulated over the years, plus the amount received in donations during the year, and on the other hand, the amount spent on operations and the projects supported by the Foundation. The Foundation must therefore constantly seek to balance its financial stability with its charitable activities. The following table shows how the Foundation has amassed substantial assets, enabling it to finance major projects while maintaining good financial health Assets $1,296,207 $1,439,954 $1,560,072 $2,209,273 $2,603,823 Donations made $330,313 $328,537 $400,591 $590,456 $597,699 Named endowment, for now and for the future For those who wish to look to the future with their donation, planned giving is the perfect choice. This is the route chosen by those who intend to make a bequest or a gift of life insurance. It s also the choice made by those who create a named endowment fund. At March 31, 2011, aside from the Dr. Francine Décary Fund which raised $125,693, the Foundation also administers the Patrick Bérard Fund, whose net assets totalled $76,433, and the Pauline Tremblay Fund, whose net assets totalled $17,045. We would like to take this occasion to thank Mr. Patrick Bérard and Ms. Pauline Tremblay for their continued support and generosity over the years. The ABDV Fund, which was created to help the ABDV, Héma Québec and its Foundation carry out their missions by financing major projects, held net assets of $49,633 at March 31, Contributions can also be made to the Stem Cell Fund or to the Human Tissue Fund. These funds support the establishment of measures aimed at improving the processes that link donors and recipients, from beginning to end. ANNUAL REPORT
Thank you to the generous members of the Foundation s Circle of Friends The Foundation s Circle of Friends is comprised of individuals, private foundations and companies that have made a cumulative donation of $1,000 or more. Although there are different categories within this outstanding group, there is only one word to describe our gratitude to each and every member: thank you! Membership in the Circle is forever. The table below lists all cumulative donations of $1,000 and more as of March 31, Donations are listed in descending order. 26 Helping today There are many ways to support the Héma Québec Foundation. For some, donating annually or participating in the monthly donation program is the best option. Others decide to organize a fundraising event to benefit the Foundation, to make a donation in memory or in honour of a loved one, or to donate publicly traded securities. The Foundation staff provides constant follow-up and support for these donors, regardless of the avenue they choose to provide help. And tomorrow! Many people are not aware that planned giving is within reach for virtually everyone. It is therefore worth inquiring with the Foundation about donating a life-insurance policy or a bequest, both of which offer attractive tax benefits for the donor or his or her estate. The Foundation subscribes, as a partner, to the LEAVE A LEGACY MD movement, a program to raise awareness about planned giving that organizes communication campaigns in targeted Québec media on our behalf. Give life. Differently. Online! If you choose to donate online, you will notice that the Foundation has completely revamped its website. Just like before, online donations are made on a secure site that ensures the confidentiality and security of the transactions. The various forms allow donors to direct their donation toward the project or service of their choice. Visit givelifedifferently.com for more details. Thank you! 26 Héma-Québec FOUNDATION
