2 General introduction of the project At first it was just a local project. The goal was to draw children's attention away from the consequences of the 2011 earthquake As the project proved to be successful, it continued broadly and transformed into an international Two levels of actions A final conference in Tokyo in August

3 Two levels of action Students will seek to tackle challenges in their community and region, which are anticipated to grow bigger towards 2030, and are looking for solutions to problems. Educational researchers are investigating how the search for solutions to the problems will help students develop the skills and abilities. 3

5 Content of the project Partner schools will introduce themselves to each other Students choose one of three directions: Think Green, Go Global, Skills demand and supply Students explore the problem, looking at the year 2030 and are looking for solutions to problems. Educational researchers are measuring students' progress. 5

11 Selection of a project theme We became familiar with the content and objectives of the project We had to choose one of three themes Think green Go global Skills demand and supply We chose the theme connected with environment: Think Green 11

13 The final decision of the theme Voting of themes in groups Top three was the following: Saving natural resources The impact of tourism on nature Wasting of food Together with the partner school, and Japan's coordinator, the final theme was chosen: The impact of tourism on the ecomomy and environment of Saaremaa 13

15 Project activities (1) Translation of school anthem into English Based on the video clip in Estonian Each student translated one verse The best verses were put together English subtitles were added to the video clip You can watch the video An expedition to nature in the Kihelkonna parish to find out how tourism impacts on nature. 15

18 Project activities (2) Preparation of a booklet about our school Themes were divided among the students We wrote texts for the booklet We choose the suitable photos The class teacher put all together and designed 18

20 Project activities (3) We explored the tourism-related problems throughout the world and chose problems actual in Saaremaa: The most important: Jobs created by tourism are often seasonal and poorly paid Tourism can push up local property prices and the cost of goods and services for residents. Money generated by tourism does not always benefit the local community, as some of it leaks out to huge international companies, such as hotel chains. Tourism poses a threat to a region's natural and cultural/architectural resources. Tourism causes increased pollution through littering. 24 Problem: tourism is seasonal Tourism is a major part of the economy of Saaremaa : travel agencies, hotels, restaurants, transport, services, events During three summer months visit Saaremaa as much tourist as during remaining nine months Tourists visit certain events, not just Saaremaa island The solution: more advertising at homeland andabroad Solution: organize interesting events and festivals throughout the year 24

26 Problem: Prices are rising because tourists are agree to pay more Discounts for locals. Lower price for essential consumer goods. Separate shops for tourists, special services targeted to tourists: sightseeing buses, seasonal restaurants/shops. 26
