1 Fall 2014 Thank you for your interest in the recent grant cycle at the Petoskey-Harbor Springs Area Community Foundation. We are thrilled to share that together we granted over $160,000 to worthwhile programs and projects in the community. Donors to the Community Endowment and the Youth Endowment, together with donors who hold advised funds at the Community Foundation, responded to needs of our nonprofit partners in order to improve the quality of life for friends and neighbors in Emmet County.

3 Page 2 Community Endowment Fund Brief Description: The Community Endowment provides the Community Foundation with flexible grantmaking dollars to support the broad range of changing needs in the community. Youth Endowment Fund Brief Description: The Youth Endowment Fund provides our Youth Advisory Committee (YAC) with grantmaking dollars to support youth programs in our community. Applicant: American Red Cross Program or Project: Rural CPR Initiative Amount Requested: $2,772 Amount Granted: $2,772 Brief Description: The Red Cross aims to teach lifesaving skills to citizens so that they can respond to immediate medical emergencies in their communities. This request will test a pilot program to create opportunities for rural high schools to offer a free CPR/AED class to all upperclassmen These students would graduate with an additional skill to distinguish them in job hunting in addition to entering the community with the skills and abilities to provide a life-saving response to a cardiac or breathing emergency. Applicant: Challenge Mountain Program or Project: Expand Year-round Programming to Special Needs Students Amount Requested: $3,600 Amount Granted: $8,000 Brief Description: The goal of all CM programs is to improve the quality of life and enhance the feeling of independence for mentally and physically challenged participants through outdoor recreation. Winter recreational programs at CM are well-established. Over the last 18 months they have expanded program offerings in the spring, summer, and fall to include adaptive biking, boating, kayaking, equine therapy, and a ropes course activity. This request would offer equine therapy and ropes course activities to 150 special needs students in Emmet County schools. Applicant: Child & Family Services Program or Project: Counseling Support for Children and Families Amount Requested: $5,950 Amount Granted: $9,000 Brief Description: This proposal seeks to provide traditional and play therapy to family members of children in foster care, foster parents, and private clients of low income or who are under- or uninsured, who are not covered by the foster care contract. Support for this purpose would allow CFS to provide 70 units of counseling, training, and support to foster and birth families on various issues, whether many individuals/groups or a smaller number of people with multiple counseling sessions, depending on need.

4 Page 3 Applicant: City of Petoskey Program or Project: Emmet Streetscape Project Amount Requested: $7,000 Amount Granted: $7,000 Brief Description: In late 2013, the City made a concerted effort to get involvement from stakeholders in suggesting neighborhood improvements to the historic Emmet Neighborhood, which is often perceived as a bad neighborhood due to its wide mix of uses and transient population. Experience in other areas of the City has taught them that improvements to the public infrastructure will result in improvements to private property. This project would develop a streetscape plan for the quarter mile section of Emmet Street between State Street and Washington Street, which would also look at possible redevelopment site design, and a plan to make Washington Park a greater neighborhood asset through improved access and increased use. Applicant: Concord Academy Program or Project: Science Lab Equipment Amount Requested: $2,050 Amount Granted: $2,050 Brief Description: The objective of this project is to purchase specialized and proper lab equipment for the science lab in order to increase student participation levels, increase efficiency, improve test scores, and allow for more hands-on opportunities in preparation for college science classes. Items include electronic microscopes (6), an autoclave to prolong life of current equipment, an anatomically correct skeleton, a metal storage cabinet, and digital cameras (6). These items would benefit students in grades Applicant: Conservation Resource Alliance Program or Project: Maple River Habitat Improvement - Robinson Road Timber Bridge Amount Requested: $8,000 Amount Granted: $8,000 Brief Description: CRA aims to enhance local economies and quality of life benefits through sensible natural resource management. CRA biologists and engineers have been working on the Maple River Habitat Improvement Project in Pellston to restore this high-quality, predominantly cold water stream that flows for roughly 23 miles into Burt Lake and the Cheboygan River Watershed. This request seeks to construct a modern timber bridge that will replace the twin culverts on Robinson Road, a project that is 80% funded and has a goal of installation in This restoration will improve fish and aquatic species passage, stream morphology, and recreational opportunities on the Maple River.

5 Page 4 Applicant: Crooked Tree Arts Center Program or Project: Purchase of Equipment to Expand Programming Amount Requested: $8,000 Amount Granted: $8,000 Brief Description: CTAC offers a deep selection of programming requiring sound, light, and/or projection equipment, such as Ten lectures, New Year's Eve at the Arts Center, receptions for exhibit openings, events in the Carnegie Building, and events on Bidwell Plaza. Over 13,000 people participate in this type of event each year. Purchases like a digital projector, four wireless headphone microphones, and a portable wireless sound system will replace and improve the quality of what is currently serving CTAC and the community. Applicant: Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra Program or Project: Organizational Capacity Building Year One Amount Requested: $10,000 Amount Granted: $7,000 Brief Description: A recently completed organizational assessment found that while GLCO provides high-quality programming and artistic contributions to the community, its administrative capability is very weak. The report provided many suggestions for improvements, with the primary recommendation being the creation of two full-time administrative positions as soon as possible. This request is a long-term approach to building the organizational capacity by creating a full-time executive director position in January, 2015, and adding an office assistant at 12 hours per week at the same time. The financial assistant will continue at 12 hours per week. If funding goals are reached over the next three years, GLCO projects that most of the cost of this effort will come from other, non-grant sources. This will allow for GLCO to better meet their mission of producing live orchestral performances to provide entertainment, education, and inspiration for this community. Applicant: Harbor Springs Area Historical Society Program or Project: State Historical Marker - Hiawatha Pageant Amount Requested: $2,000 Amount Granted: $2,000 Brief Description: HSAHS, in partnership with the Petoskey Area Antiques Club, is erecting a Michigan Historical Marker on the North Western State Trail commemorating the Hiawatha Pageant, which was operated by the Grand Rapids and Indiana Railroad from 1905 to 1912 on the shores of Round Lake. The purpose is to educate the public about this historic pageant which employed local Odawa and Ojibwe people and brought thousands of tourists to the area. Applicant: Harbor Springs Public Schools Program or Project: Learning through Multimedia Production Amount Requested: $6,255 Amount Granted: $6,255 Brief Description: This quality production equipment will allow K-12 students to produce both audio and visual projects as learning tools in fine arts, media, and technology. Projects such as original or cover songs, videos, podcasts, lip-dubs, and plays/skits will encourage creative, interactive, and collaborative education and will allow for students to assess their skills as they grow.

6 Page 5 Applicant: Health Department of Northwest Michigan Program or Project: Updating Infrastructure to Improve Service Delivery Amount Requested: $3,000 Amount Granted: $3,000 Brief Description: The Hornet Health Center is a school-based health center operated by the Health Department in collaboration with Pellston Public Schools in order to offer students in Pellston primary health care services with a focus on preventative health and reduction of risk behaviors, removing barriers to students' academic success, and promoting overall wellness now and in the future. The request seeks to make changes to infrastructure necessary to expand into a satellite office in the Elementary School and improve clinic operations by installing a video intercom security system at the Middle/High School entrance to the Health Center. Applicant: Hospice of Northwest Michigan Program or Project: Website Upgrades and Technology Resources Amount Requested: $6,000 Amount Granted: $3,600 Brief Description: HNWM provides support and care for patients and their families during and following life-limiting illness, in addition to bereavement and grief support services for families and community. This request would allow for improvement of existing website and technology to facilitate outreach to potential clients and families, provide trusted online giving, and to support the clients' and families' growing need for technology based Hospice resources and tools. Currently about 30% of HNWM's patients are in Emmet County. Applicant: Little Traverse Bay Humane Society Program or Project: Diagnostic Medical Equipment for Veterinary Clinic Amount Requested: $15,000 Amount Granted: $15,000 Brief Description: LTBHS is launching a capital campaign to build an in-house veterinary clinic in response to the need for vet services for shelter animals and the need for affordable veterinary services to community pet owners. Services would include spay/neuter procedures, vaccinations, blood work and testing, in addition to wellness and diagnostics for owned animals. This clinic would help LTBHS continue invaluable low-cost spay/neuter programs, which reduce the pet overpopulation in our area and ease the financial burden on pet owners. This request is for necessary medical equipment, the budget for which totals $160,100. Applicant: Little Traverse Conservancy Program or Project: New Parking Area, Trail, and Bridge for McCune Nature Preserve Amount Requested: $10,000 Amount Granted: $10,000 Brief Description: The McCune Nature Preserve, located about 7 miles outside of Petoskey, has become one of LTC's most popular and well-loved preserves. This request will address access difficulties through the construction of a larger and safer parking area and will extend the existing three-mile trail loop with a new bridge over a branch of the Minnehaha Creek.

7 Page 6 Applicant: Little Traverse Regional Historical Society Program or Project: Museum East Gallery Improvements Amount Requested: $6,500 Amount Granted: $6,500 Brief Description: Building on a recent grant that allowed for upgrades to the permanent exhibits in the museum, LTRHS would like to refurbish 10 display cases (including lighting, shelving, and backdrops) and create interpretive panels for the walls in the East Gallery, which houses displays related to the Little Traverse Bay region. The goal is to make the museum's collection accessible to the public while preserving the integrity of the items. Applicant: NCMC Foundation Program or Project: Furnishings for Student Study Area Amount Requested: $3,500 Amount Granted: $3,500 Brief Description: The college strives to create a 'sense of place' for its students where they can meet, study, interact, socialize, and spend productive time before, between, and after classes. In the Administration/Classroom (ADCL) building where there are 22 classrooms, this space is at a premium. Much of the teaching and learning that happens on campus takes place in this building, so approximately three years ago furnishings were added and updated in the main lobby, and student feedback has been extremely positive. This proposal requests funds to update furnishings in the ADCL building's lower level, an area which is adjacent to classrooms and the six officers dedicated to the NCMC university center partners. Applicant: North Country Kids Program or Project: Safety Doors Amount Requested: $6,000 Amount Granted: $6,000 Brief Description: North Country Kids provides families in the Harbor Springs area with daycare and preschool. They aim to follow the lead of Harbor Springs Public Schools by installing safety doors to secure the entry way in addition to creating safer emergency exits. Three doors with panic bars will be installed for easy and hands-free exits. The front entry door will be set up with a magnetic lock system, which will be locked during less trafficked times of day with a buzzer in place so that office staff can allow parents to enter during those times. Applicant: Northern Community Mediation Program or Project: Safety and Security System Amount Requested: $1,540 Amount Granted: $1,540 Brief Description: NCM recently worked with an expert in safety and emergency management in the mediation setting to train staff and mediators with a focus on personal safety, powers of observation, and defusing processes, potentially violent situations, and threats. He also conducted an assessment of NCM's space, noting several vulnerabilities with their current set up. Recommendations to mitigate these vulnerabilities include a digital alarm system, wireless panic button system, and a video surveillance system. This request would support half of those costs.

8 Page 7 Applicant: Northwest Michigan Habitat for Humanity Program or Project: Donation Pick Up Cargo Van Amount Requested: $10,000 Amount Granted: $10,000 Brief Description: The primary source of funding for NWM Habitat is the ReStore located in Harbor Springs. In order to adequately respond to increased community demand for ReStore donation pickup, this request for $10,000 will allow for the purchase of a second donation pick up vehicle. Habitat is currently expanding warehouse space of the ReStore and building the interior of separate office space, also in response to the popularity of this resale store, which the Community Foundation helped to establish in 2006 with a grant of $9,000. Applicant: Petoskey Club Program or Project: Arts, Cultural, and Wellness Programs Amount Requested: $8,055 Amount Granted: $10,055 Brief Description: The Petoskey Club is a membership organization open to adults who are challenged by mental illness and free of active substance abuse which is committed to the individual and collective well-being of it's members. This request hopes to restore social-recreational activities with two goals: to make affordable and available an array of diverse artistic and cultural experiences to clubhouse members who would not otherwise have access to such opportunities and to increase health and wellness through an expansion of physical activities during social-recreational time. Applicant: Petoskey Public Schools Program or Project: FIRST Robotics purchase of a third robot to allow for greater participation Amount Requested: $2,500 Amount Granted: $2,500 Brief Description: The mission of this afterschool robotics team is to inspire young people to be science and technology leaders by engaging them in exciting hands-on experiential learning and mentor-based programs that build science, engineering, and technology skills, that inspire innovation, and that foster well-rounded life capabilities including self-confidence, communication, and leadership. Each participating team is required to purchase a robot kit, which they will build and program. First Robotics has already raised enough to purchase two kits, but with 26 students on the middle school team, they would like to purchase one more so that they can all have hands-on experiences true to the FIRST Robotics model. Applicant: Presbyterian Villages of Michigan Foundation Program or Project: Village of Hillside/Harbor Springs Friendship Center Renewal Campaign Amount Requested: $15,000 Amount Granted: $15,000 Brief Description: This Campaign goal, when achieved, will allow The Village of Hillside to expand their essential services to low-income Harbor Springs seniors through 32 (24 replacement and 8 new) handicapped accessible and affordable senior apartments, and to significantly expand the Friendship Center/community center area from 600 sq. ft. to 2,000 sq. ft., allowing them to double the current number of seniors served meals and activities.

9 Page 8 Applicant: Raven Hill Discovery Center Program or Project: TEC (Transportation Explorations and Challenges) Days Amount Requested: $6,000 Amount Granted: $3,000 Brief Description: This request would bring TEC Days to elementary and middle schools in Emmet County to encourage future engineers to explore careers in transportation and provide opportunities for them to meet challenges and develop valuable skills similar to transportation engineers. For example, during each session, elementary students will create their own vehicles - land, water, air, or space - depending on grade level. Students will then explore challenges and problems presented, such as distance, accuracy, and direction. Applicant: Tip of the Mitt Watershed Council Program or Project: The Watershed Academy Amount Requested: $4,775 Amount Granted: $5,775 Brief Description: This request proposes to pilot a "Watershed Academy" program for 100 motivated 9th and 10th grade students that will complement their regular school curriculum. The purpose is to provide students with the tools and knowledge to translate small-scale stewardship projects such as stream monitoring, into a long-term regional stewardship ethic and to cultivate the next generation of water resource stewards. Watershed Academy members will be biology students from Boyne City, East Jordan, Harbor Springs, Pellston, and Petoskey schools who are interested in a unique, enriching, project-based experience focused on water conservation, protection, and restoration. Applicant: Voices Without Borders, Inc. Program or Project: Music/Voice Education Series for Choir Directors and Members Amount Requested: $3,150 Amount Granted: $3,150 Brief Description: Voices Without Borders was founded in 2008 to promote, support, and sponsor choral music performances and other performing arts activities for young people in Emmet, Charlevoix, and Cheboygan counties. This project will present two workshops/master classes each for singers and community choir directors that are designed to improve the skill levels and competencies of the participants, both youth and adults. Applicant: YMCA of Northern Michigan Program or Project: Member Management Software Amount Requested: $2,268 Amount Granted: $2,268 Brief Description: As the YMCA works to build organizational capacity and to develop and expand programs offered in the community, they are in need of a tool that will allow staff to efficiently track program information in a central location in addition to maintaining accurate and transparent records. This request would allow YMCA to purchase a web-based system that most closely matches organizational needs while also meeting their ability to sustain this tool beyond the grant funding period. This improvement in back office function will allow staff to spend more time on their primary focus of youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.
