Program Assessment SWOT Analysis Strengths and Opportunities (Optional) Please describe your department or unit's strengths and opportunities. Are there things that your department or unit does better than other departments/units within or outside of the college? What do our students see as your strengths? Are you offering unique programs or courses to our students? Are there interesting trends that your department or unit can take advantage of (including technological, policy, or social trends)? Where does your department or unit excel? What opportunities or initiatives does your department or unit wish to pursue? VPAM is a unique educational resource for the college and the community at large. As one of the only museums at a community college in the country, we provide an unparalleled opportunity for LACCD students to engage with our diverse, global museum collections and dynamic temporary exhibitions, which center around Latino and Asian-American art. We provide training and job experience in the museum field to students through our student worker program, and now serve as a hub for arts and cultural tutoring for students. We now also offer a museum studies internship in partnership with the Smithsonian museums in Washington DC. The main area our department wishes to pursue is increased educational programming tailored to our college community. The primary way to increase our partnerships within the college s diverse departments is though the hiring of a museum education curator, who can develop and implement that programming, as well as oversee the extensive public programs the museum currently offers, as well as being the coordinator for the Smithsonian internship program. Weaknesses and Threats (Optional) Please describe your department or unit's weaknesses or threats. What can your department or unit improve? What do students see as your weaknesses? What factors are keeping your students from enrolling, persisting, or succeeding in your courses or programs? What obstacles are you facing (these could be technological, policy, or social obstacles)? What are similar departments or units at other colleges doing to be successful? The main weakness of the department is that we are understaffed. The museum transitioned from a single 2,000 square foot room to a 40,000 square foot facility with 7 exhibitions spaces a full 7 years ago. An adjustment in staff size to accommodate the increase in scope of the department was never January 19, :03 PM Page 2 of 7

3 East Los Angeles College Vincent Price Art Museum AUP for Administrative Units Strategic Initiative Report undertaken. The museum has undergone two strategic planning processes, each of which identified staff size as the major obstacle for the museum. While the museum operates with the support of its own foundation, the need for an ELAC-employed staff member working with museum educational programs is the number one need and priority for the department. The job description and pay scale have been written and approved by the LACCD Personnel Commission, but funding for the position remains an obstacle. Other threats include an ongoing problem with climate control in the building. The museum suffers from problems with its HVAC system that are systemic, and have not been resolved, which impact the safety of artworks on view. The building has also suffered from leaks from the pump room, resulting in possible water damage to our gallery floors. Solutions to the problem include more extensive work on our HVAC system, a PEM II system to monitor temperature and humidity around the clock, as well as the acquisition of dehumidifiers and humidifiers to regular conditions in the galleries. Administrative Unit Outcomes Participation Progress Please discuss your unit or department's participation in the development, revision, or assessment of your Administrative Unit Outcomes (AUOs). Please briefly describe your AUOs and what they measure. VPAM does not have an AUO, and hasn't had one in the past. We will contact the learning assessment office to get more information. 5 East Los Angeles College Vincent Price Art Museum AUP for Administrative Units Strategic Initiative Report Expansion COLLECTIONS GROWTH: VPAM brought in 5 major artworks into the collection through direct donations from artists. Additionally, VPAM established a Collection Committee as a sub-committee for the VPAM Foundation. EDUCATION PROGRAMS: VPAM established and fundraised for the Smithsonian Internship Program for Museum Studies for ELAC students. Through its partnership with LACMA, VPAM offered a dynamic set of free educational programs for students and community groups in East LA and Monterey Park. Additionally, VPAM offered numerous free pubic programs throughout the year including lectures, panel discussions, and film screenings. GROUNDBREAKING EXHIBITIONS: VPAM gained national and international recognition throughout the year for its compelling exhibitions and publications focused on Latino art, and its partnerships with the Getty, UCLA and LACMA. In addition to increased press coverage, which saw the museum in the New York Times, The New Yorker, and The Guardian, among a few outlets, the museum was approached to travel one of its exhibitions to Tufts University in Boston. DIGITAL ACCESSIBILITY: VPAM created a new website, developed a museum blog, and an online store, updated its digital newsletter format, and increased its social media presence through the use of platforms such as Facebook Live. Recommended Actions Goal: COLLECTIONS GROWTH: VPAM aims to bring in 5 major artworks into the collection through direct donations from artists, as well as through a fund to be established by the VPAM Foundation by July This goal has been completed. Goal: DIGITAL ACCESSIBILITY: VPAM will continue to update its website, blog, online store, digital newsletter, and social media platforms to connect to our multiple communities. This goal is ongoing, and will be met as we move through the year incrementally. Goal: EDUCATION PROGRAMS: VPAM intends to fundraise again for the Smithsonian Internship Program for Museum Studies for ELAC students, roughly $30,000 to cover all costs, and send a second cohort of students to Washington DC in January Through its partnership with LACMA, VPAM will offer free educational programs for students and community groups in East LA and Monterey Park. Additionally, VPAM will offer numerous free public programs throughout the year including lectures, panel discussions, and film screenings. The recommended action for this goal is the establishment of a Curator of Education Position for the museum, a classified staff position which has already been approved by the LACCD Personnel Commission. VPAM never increased its staff when it transitioned into a museum and expanded to 20 times its original size (2,000 sq. ft to 40,000 sq. ft) and expanded its programs and exhibitions by 250% (moved from 6 to 15 exhibitions per year to fill 7 exhibition spaces, rather than 1 gallery). Seven years have passed without any staff increase to accommodate the expanded building and its programs. This position is essential for effective engagement with the students and college community. The establishment of this position will allow the Museum Director to focus on fundraising for the Eduction Programs at the museum, including the Smithsonian Internship Program. This program, and all of the public programs offered by the museum, are ongoing throughout the year. January 19, :03 PM Page 5 of 7
