1 Inverness Creative Academy Application guidelines for artists and makers June 2018

2 Introduction: Wasps provides studios and workspaces for artists, makers and creative industries and facilities for communities across Scotland. We are really excited to be able to extend this provision to the wider creative community of Inverness and beyond. The Inverness Creative Academy project will transform the beautiful B-Listed buildings of the former Inverness Royal Academy in the Crown area of the city into a creative hub. We would now like to invite formal applications from all artists, designers and makers who are interested in renting space in this exciting new studio project in Inverness. About the project: This project will build the largest creative hub for artists, designers and makers working in the Scottish Highlands. Alongside the provision of creative workspace, this project will encourage new collaboration between artistic practices and also enable public access to creative activities, exhibitions and events in these beautiful historic buildings. The development of the former Inverness Royal Academy will happen in two phases. The first phase will provide: 39 studios for artists and makers We anticipate that this part of the project will be complete by the end of 2018 The second phase will provide: 54 workspaces for creative industries and cultural social enterprises Public café within the restored former Assembly Hall Public exhibition, events and workshop spaces. We anticipate that this part of the project will be complete in Summer This application pack is for all artists and makers who will be based inphase 1. 3 Studio Layouts Ground Floor First and Mezzanine Floor

4 Costs: Smaller studios range from costs in the region of 100 to 175 per month. Medium and large-sized studios range from costs in the region of 175 per month. Costs include rent and all service costs. Studio tenants are responsible for arranging their own contents insurance. Studio shares are also an option for applicants. Studio Types The following studio types will be available for let: Partitioned studio (with part height walls) Open plan studio (large room divided) Single room/ self contained studio Shared studio How to apply: Overleaf are details of our eligibility for studio criteria. Wasps provides affordable studio space for artists and makers across Scotland and we must ensure that leases are issued to creative people whose practices benefit the most from the service that we offer. 5 Eligibility for artist/maker Studio Spaces: Wasps studio spaces are provided to support visual and applied artists. These are the kind of tenancies that will be housed in phase 1 of the development. These spaces are provided at lower than market rents and, although we aim to be as inclusive as possible, given that spaces are limited and demand from artists is high, we want to ensure that space is leased to practicing artists. In assessing eligibility, we take into account a number of different factors such as type of practice, what stage you are at in your career (for example, in assessing an artist s experience if he/she is a recent graduate) and the scale of your output (e.g. are you making one off pieces). How we allocate studios When allocating studio spaces we will try to match the studio available with the needs of the artists on our register for space, as well as the taking into account the date of application. In matching artists to spaces, as well as considerations of budget and studio type/size, we will take into account the compatibility of an individual artist s practice with neighbouring spaces in terms of any noise, dust, vibration etc arising from that practice. Visual Artists Due to the diverse nature of contemporary visual arts practice, it can be difficult to categorise but we use the term visual artist to describe painters, sculptors, printmakers, installation artists, audio artists, video and film makers, fine art photographers, performance artists, multi media and graphic artists. Applied Artists We use the term applied artist to describe jewellers/silversmiths, ceramicists, glass artists, weavers and textile artists, illustrators/cartoonists. Designer-Makers These would include fashion designers, milliners, furniture makers/designers, creative metal workers, musical instrument makers (eligibility is dependent upon our judgement about your scale of work and size of output (e.g unique items compared to industrial output). Timeline: We would like all creative practitioners who have already registered their interest in space to formally apply using the application form attached by 5pm. MONDAY 18TH AUGUST These applications will be processed and you will be notified of your application has been shortlisted by FRIDAY 17TH AUGUST All shortlisted applicants will be invited to studio viewings between 4TH - 5TH SEPTEMBER Dates and times will be confirmed nearer the time. Applicants should know which studio has been allocated to them by 30TH SEPTEMBER 2018
