1 Artist Exchange Residency Opportunities 2018 marks a cultural exchange between the two largest cities in their respective countries Glasgow in Scotland and Berlin in Germany sprawling metropoles whose inhabitants are in a perpetual state of creating their own futures. Former centres of manufacturing and engineering, the erosion of their industrial bases has given partial rise to new cultural hubs and one of these is the medium of photography. A parallel exists through similarities in cultural and historical landscapes that have helped shape the cities and their peoples, as well as their cultural scenes, which gives both a critical position in the art zeitgeist. Street Level Photoworks, Glasgow in collaboration with Ostkreuz Association for Photography together with Ostkreuzschule for Photography, Berlin are delighted to launch a call for submissions from photographers and artists working with photography, for International residencies in each city. Outcomes will be exhibited in Glasgow and in Berlin in later The project is funded by Festival 2018 (the cultural programme of the first ever European Championships, co-hosted by Glasgow and Berlin), The Goethe Institut Glasgow, and The British Council UK/DK Street Level Photoworks (hereby referred to as SLP) was founded in 1989 and is a leading photography arts organisation in Scotland, which provides artists and the public with a range of opportunities to make and engage with photography. It is a production and educational resource and its exhibitions programme embraces different genres of photography, which is extended through a network of local and community venues, regional art galleries, and through national and international partners. Ostkreuz Association for Photography was established in 2015 by the members of Berlin based Ostkreuz Agency of photographers. The latter was founded in 1990 by seven East German photographers. Today the collective comprises of 22 photographers, the youngest in their early 30s, the oldest in their 60s and is the most renowned photographer run agency in Germany. The nonprofit Ostkreuz Association serves as a platform to contribute to a public discourse on photography either by showcasing exhibitions, maintaining important archives or tackling questions concerning photography today in panel discussions.

2 Residency Structure The opportunity includes a funded one-month stay for one photographer from Glasgow in Berlin through the Ostkreuz Association for Photography and one from Berlin in Glasgow through Street Level Photoworks. There is no strict theme, but key driving concerns are people and place, postindustrial futures, heritage and migration. The residencies will involve each resident providing practical support to the other with the option of further creative dialogue in the process which will influence the residency outcomes (ie exhibition material). Each artist is expected to write at minimum 2 short diary and image entries to a project blog. Dates for Glasgow artist in Berlin: July 2018 (precise dates TBC) Dates for Berlin artist in Glasgow: August (precise dates TBC) * an option may be considered in commencing the residencies earlier and in splitting the structure from one solid 4 weeks to blocks of 2 x two week periods. Results Each artist will contribute work made during their residency time for group exhibitions that will take place in Berlin and Glasgow in later 2018/19. The Berlin artist will be required to participate in a public presentation on their work in Glasgow on August 4 th (date and format may be subject to change) alongside members of AFF Galerie, Berlin. The Glasgow artist will be required to participate in a public presentation on their work in Berlin on Sunday 14 th October (date and format may be subject to change) alongside any other Scottish artists exhibiting at AFF Galerie. Fees & Support One month residency through Ostkreuz Association for Photography, flight, accommodation and per diems provided. Artist fee: 1000 inclusive of residency fee, exhibition payment and image release rights for public display and any online presentation/promotion/marketing by Ostkreuz,

3 SLP and funders. Production cost of work for any exhibition outcome will be determined by SLP in consultation with project partners. During the residency, one public lecture on the personal career and practice as well as on the project pursued organized by Ostkreuz Association for Photography. Eligibility The residencies are aimed at committed photographers with a developed and serious approach to their work. Must be resident in Glasgow (for the Berlin opportunity). Must be an alumni of Ostkreuzschule for Photography (for the Glasgow opportunity). Must be available to travel for the dates stated. The successful artists must submit a report on completion.

4 Exclusions Students and those in Further Education are not eligible. Selection The selection of the artists will be made by a panel comprising of representatives of Street Level, Ostkreuz and guest selectors.
