1 1001 Wickapecko Drive, Ocean, NJ Voice: Fax: Toll Free : Web Site: "The purpose of the annual conference is to make disciples for Jesus Christ by equipping its local churches for ministry and by providing a connection for ministry beyond the local church, all to the glory of God" To: Pastors and Missions/Outreach Chairpersons, GNJAC From: The GNJAC Board of Church and Society RE: Announcement of 2014 Peace With Justice Grants Enclosed is the Application form for the 2014 Peace with Justice Grants. You can access additional copies of the form by going to the Greater New Jersey Conference web page and clicking on "Grants, Loans and Scholarships" under the Resources tab. Applications for Peace with Justice grants for the coming year are due on Monday, April 21, 2014 and should be mailed to Ginny Kaiser at the Conference Office. Applications may be submitted by any group related to the Annual Conference - a local church, an agency of the conference, a district, or by two or more such groups in cooperation. Funding for this program is generated by the local churches through Peace with Justice offerings taken on Peace with Justice Sunday. Peace with Justice Sunday is one of the official church wide Special Sundays when the Peace with Justice Special Offering is collected. Annual Conferences keep half of the offering to fund local projects while the other half goes to the General Board of Church and Society Peace with Justice Program to fund national and global work in social action and public policy education and advocacy. For more information on Peace with Justice Sunday, visit The total amount of grant monies available varies according to the size of the offerings taken each year. As the GNJAC Board, we believe that vital congregations are congregations deeply rooted mercy and justice ministries. Christian discipleship is centered in living out the love and grace of God that we have experienced. The Board will use these grants to foster and strengthen the mission-spirited bright spots of our Conference. We will place a priority on funding programs that focus on developing turnaround spiritual leaders and are part of a congregation s or congregations plan to increase the number of GNJAC worshipers in mission to the larger community.

2 The Board also wishes to support the General Board of Church and Society objectives for Peace with Justice grants ( Specifically, we will consider funding programs that align with the following objectives: To assist United Methodists in understanding and responding to violence and militarism. To involve United Methodists in efforts to end conflicts and violent aggression around the world. To promote just local, national and international policies and actions (governmental and non-governmental) which seek to restore communities and respond to the disproportionate effect of injustices on racial and ethnic persons. To support policies that promote systematic economic justice and the selfdevelopment of peoples. In making its funding decisions, the Board will give priority to: 1. Successful ongoing projects or ministries which can become bright spots for other local churches in the conference. 2. Creative projects or ministries which will serve as pilot programs for the development of new forms of mercy and justice ministries. 3. Projects bringing representatives from local churches throughout the conference into contact with the best leadership and resources at the "cutting edge" of vital Peace with Justice concerns. 4. Projects for which a Peace with Justice grant will serve as seed money for continuing support from other sources in later years. Shalom, Questions about the grants can be directed to: Rev. 3 Greater New Jersey Conference of The United Methodist Church PEACE WITH JUSTICE GRANT PROGRAM 2014 APPLICATION FORM AND GUIDELINES ABOUT PEACE WITH JUSTICE GRANTS According to the 2012 United Methodist Book of Discipline, the purpose of the General Board of Church and Society shall be to: [R]elate the gospel of Jesus Christ to the members of the Church and to the persons and structures of the communities and world in which they live. It shall seek to bring the whole of human life, activities, possessions, use of resources, and community and world relationships into conformity with the will of God. It shall show the members of the Church and Society that the reconciliation that God effected through Christ involves personal, social and civic righteousness. ( 1002) In order to achieve its purpose, the board shall: Encourage Christian lines of action that assist humankind to move toward a world where peace and justice are achieved. ( ) The Peace With Justice Sunday, preferably with an offering, taken on the first Sunday after Pentecost, witnesses to God's demand for a faithful, just, disarmed, and secure world. It is the responsibility of the Board of Church and Society to provide general supervision to the observation of this Sunday and offering. PEACE WITH JUSTICE GRANTS PROGRAM Funding for this program is generated by the local churches from the Peace With Justice offerings taken on Peace With Justice Sunday. Fifty percent (50%) of these offerings are retained in the Annual Conferences and the remainder is forwarded to the General Board of Church and Society. The total amount of grants varies according to the offerings. (See and 823.5). Grants are awarded annually. Continuing funding may be recommended.
