5 Congratulations on qualifying to participate in the National FFA Job Interview CDE at the 86th National FFA Convention & Expo! We are fast approaching the event and the job interview CDE committee would like to update you on a few reminders. Packets with ten copies of your cover letter and resume are due to the national FFA office by September 16 (postmarked). All letters are to be addressed to Job Interview CDE Superintendent, at the national FFA center address FFA Drive, Indianapolis, IN The coaches/orientation meeting will take place at 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday, October 30, in the Bluegrass room at the Brown Hotel in downtown Louisville. Also, during this time name badges and meal tickets for the awards breakfast will be distributed to the students. Participants and one advisor will receive a complimentary ticket for the award banquet. Immediately following the coaches meeting the students will receive random placement for their scheduling for the rest of the event. Due to changes in the CDE, students will rotate from application to telephone interview based on their random placement. They may have the telephone interview first as the computer lab will only accommodate ten students at a time for the new online application portion of the event. Something new this year - job interview CDE participants will now be recognized with the speaking winners at the 7th General Session at 7 p.m. on Friday, November 1. The top four participants will be recognized at the awards banquet Friday morning and will find out 1st-4th placings on the mainstage Friday night. Most questions can be answered by referring to the National FFA CDE handbook, but if you have a question you need help with, don t hesitate to contact me. I can be reached at shifletjames@verizon.net. I look forward to seeing you in October! Sincerely, James A. Shiflet Superintendent National FFA Job Interview CDE

9 Preparing for the Event Student Waiver Form Each CDE team member must have the Waiver, Release of Liability and Consent to Medical Attention on file in order to participate in any of the events. The waiver must be signed by the student and at least one parent or legal guardian. This form allows National FFA to summon medical personnel and/or treat minor injuries should the need arise. Students without this form on file will not be allowed to participate in the event. The personalized waivers can be found on the chapter online certification page. Send completed waivers to the National FFA Center, Career Development Events, 6060 FFA Dr., Indianapolis, IN Please remember that if you delete a team member and add a new one you will need to submit a new waiver for the added student. Changing Your Team s Certification (Add/Delete) If for any reason, one of your original certified CDE team members cannot participate in the event, advisors can make changes to teams in the chapter online certification form. First delete the team member who cannot compete, then add another member from the drop-down box (chapter roster list) and hit save. State staff will be alerted on the state online declaration to approve all changes to the teams. ***IMPORTANT All team changes must be made ONLINE by Tuesday, October 29 at noon (Eastern). There will be no on-site CDE registration booth at convention to submit paper forms. Convention Registration CDE teams must be registered for the convention in order to participate but they do NOT need to be registered separately from others attending convention from your chapter. Please register CDE team members as you do your other members. For more information about convention registration please consult the National FFA Convention & Expo website. Special Needs Accommodations Requests CDE participants who are eligible for special needs accommodations must complete the Special Needs Request form which can be found on the CDE webpage. The advisor, participant and his or her parent/legal guardian must complete this form and send it to national FFA staff member, Jim Armbruster, at jarmbruster@ffa.org. This form is only a request for accommodation; once the request is reviewed by national FFA staff, further documentation of the participant s disability may be required. Requests must be submitted by August 15 in order for the National FFA Organization to guarantee that materials will be reviewed or that any accommodation will be provided. For requests that are submitted after the August 15 deadline, National FFA will make every attempt to review and process these requests; however, the accommodations may be limited or denied due to time constraints. Practice Exams and Scantron Sheets If you would like copies of written exams and practicums from previous year s events please order online with Shop FFA. The CDE materials can be purchased from the CDE section of the CORE catalog. Look for CDE NCQ. There are no materials available for Creed speaking CDE or dairy handlers activity. You can download practice scan sheets, like those used to score the national events, free of charge by visiting the CDE webpage and selecting your event area (under event preparation heading). You may also purchase a set of original scan sheets from the CORE catalog. Certification Fees Your state FFA association will receive an invoice and pay your team s $35 certification fee. Please contact your state with any questions regarding certification fees.

14 the Event, cont. CDE Office CDE Information Office is located at the Kentucky Exposition Center in the West Hall WH There is also a downtown CDE Information Office at the Marriott Hotel Registration Desk 1 (second floor) to assist teams and guests with questions. Checking In Team Orientation Meeting Your team will be officially checked-in at the team orientation meeting run by the event superintendent. (See schedule of events for day and time.) It is extremely important that all advisors and team members attend; this is your official check-in site and it is also where you will learn of any last minute changes and be given any special instructions or resource information. The event staff will also distribute your award banquet meal tickets (for one advisor and all team members). If, for some reason, the advisor and team members cannot attend, they must send a representative. Team Photos Each team participating in the CDEs will have the opportunity to have a professional team photo taken free of charge. A copy of the photo and a news release will be ed to the team s hometown newspaper (if one is listed on the certification form) and posted on the chapter online certification site. All students should be in official dress and advisors in business attire for the photos. Team photos will be taken in the West Hall at the Kentucky Expo Center as well as several downtown Louisville hotel locations. Photos will also be taken of the winning teams and individuals following each event award banquet. For photo times and specific locations, see the schedule of events at the beginning of this packet. Event Rules and Procedures The event will follow the rules and procedures found in the Career Development Events Handbook. You can find the handbook under the event rules heading in the individual event pages on the CDE webpage. Participants should be familiar with their event handbook prior to competing and must keep in mind that they must work as individuals, except during team designated activities. Any infraction of the rules may result in disqualification of the individual(s) and/or team involved. Cell Phones Students should NOT bring cell phones, pagers or any hand held electronic communication devices to the event. Participants who access personal electronic communication devices without prior approval of the event officials may be subject to disqualification. Code of Ethics Participants in the CDEs are expected to conduct themselves in accordance with the FFA Code of Ethics found in the Official FFA Manual. Please review and discuss the code of ethics with your team along with the specific rules and guidelines of your event. Official Dress Recommendations All team members should be in official dress for the photo session and award banquet. Please see the Official FFA Manual for a description of official dress. Refer to Appendix III or your event rules and procedures to see if official dress is required during your event. Scoring & Tiebreakers Appendix III shows the number of participants allowed in each event and the number of individual scores that will count toward the final team score. Details on how each component of the event is scored, and how ties will be broken if they should occur, can be found in your event rules and procedures from the CDE Handbook.

15 the Event, cont. Tours Convention attendees can take a walking tour of the CDEs on the Kentucky Expo Center on Thursday, October 31, from 9:00 am through noon. No reservations are required; sign-up is available at the CDE Tour Registration Desk in West Hall. Advisors: If you have a team participating in a CDE at KEC, please help us protect the integrity of the event. Do not enter the building your team members are in unless you have been given prior approval by the event superintendent. Your team may be disqualified if event officials determine that your presence has compromised the integrity of the event. You will get an opportunity to view the event area during the event review. Please see your schedule of events for the time of the event review.

16 After the Event Award Banquet The award banquets are the highlight of each career development event. Winners are announced and awards are presented; special guests are often present to offer remarks and special greetings to all participants. Team and individual winners will have their photos taken immediately after the ceremonies. Printed photos and press releases are provided to each event s national winning team and top three individuals after convention. These photos will also be ed to the team s hometown newspaper. See the schedule of events at the beginning of this packet for the banquet schedule. Award Banquet Meal Tickets All teams will be provided with a banquet meal ticket for each certified team member and one advisor during their respective team orientation meeting. Participating CDE teams do not need to register for their banquets nor do they need to purchase tickets. For others interested in attending the banquets (i.e. parents, siblings, etc.), additional tickets can be purchased through online convention registration on a first come, first serve basis. If the tickets are not sold out before convention, they will also be available to purchase onsite. Please see your convention guidebook for information about on-site registration. Cash Awards In an effort to create positive change while recognizing more students, national FFA changed CDE scholarships to cash awards in This change has allowed national FFA to provide students with award money immediately after convention rather than deferring the award until they enter college. This change benefits all participants since winners will not have to forfeit their award if they choose not to pursue higher education. Scholarships awarded in 2011 or before will continue to be distributed as in the past. CDE winners at the 2013 convention will receive instructions on the process for claiming their cash award. See Appendix II for amounts of cash awards given for each CDE. The cash awards will be presented at the award banquet. Main Stage Recognition The top four individuals for the Creed speaking, extemporaneous speaking, prepared public speaking and job interview CDEs will be recognized on the main arena stage during the seventh session of the convention on Friday evening. For all other events, the first place team and top three individuals will be recognized on stage during the ninth session of the convention on Saturday afternoon. Detailed instructions for winners about what time to be at the arena and where to meet will be presented at the awards banquet. Share Your Success Story! Qualifying for a national event is quite an accomplishment! The National FFA Organization wants to know what it took for you to come this far. Send your success story to cde@ffa.org. Please type CDE Success Story in the subject line. Stories may be submitted by either the team advisor or a participant. All submissions become property of the National FFA Organization and may be used for promotional purposes. Thank Your Sponsors Sponsorship provides funds for the event, cash awards, team and individual recognition and the award banquet. Please take the time to let the sponsors know that their support is appreciated. The event sponsor(s) and contact information can be found on the CDE webpage. Questions? If you have any further questions about participation in the national CDEs, feel free to contact cde@ffa.org.

17 Appendix I Filing Appeals/Waiver of Rules The following information is provided for schools who file appeals and/or waivers of FFA policies. These polices have been adopted by the National FFA Board of Directors and are found in the National FFA Career Development Events Handbook Rules Committee/Scoring Appeals Process A. If a written appeal is filed within the seven (7) calendar days after results announcement, national CDE staff will review the appeal. Upon receiving input from team leader and division director, national CDE staff will accept or deny the appeal. The national CDE staff s recommendation will be shared with appeals committee and National FFA Chief Executive Officer for further input, if necessary. 1. The written appeal must be filed with the Education Division staff responsible for scoring career development events within seven (7) calendar days of the results announcement and accompanied by a $50 filing fee. The fee will be returned if the appeal is justified. B. The appeals committee will be chaired by the National FFA Awards, Recognition and Career Development Events Advisory Committee chairperson who will in turn appoint a representative of the each of the following organizations: National Association of Supervisors of Agricultural Education (NASAE), National Association of Agricultural Educators (NAAE) and the American Association for Agricultural Education (AAAE). The National FFA staff responsible for career development events will also serve on the committee. Waiver of FFA Rules Any local chapter seeking a waiver of a National FFA policy or procedure must submit in writing to the chapter s state FFA association office. If the request is approved at the state level, it must be forwarded, under the signature of the state advisor or executive secretary, to the career development events education specialist. After study by the appropriate FFA staff, a recommendation to grant or deny the appeal will be forward to the chief executive officer for his/her approval. The request must be submitted to the national FFA staff at least 30 days prior to the scheduled event or due date for which the waiver is requested. This policy does not supersede any current FFA policy for appeals already established for a particular FFA program.
