Here is an opportunity to learn the basics of sewing. The Erie county 4-H textile committee will be offering a one day sewing workshop. The workshop is open to all enrolled 4-Hers ages 8+. Participants can choose to make either a pair of shorts or a skirt. Date: March 2, 2019 Time: 9:00am-3:00pm (Lunch provided from 12:00-12:30) Fee: $5 per participant Supplies Needed: -1 ½ yards of cotton fabric (Any pattern) - Matching thread Attention Teens 4-H Capital Days in Albany May 19-21, 2019 Are you interested in learning about and experiencing our New York State government first hand? If you are you are invited to apply to be a delegate for the Erie County 4-H program to attend the H Capital Days event May 19-21, Hers will have the opportunity to interact with their senator and legislature to tell your 4-H story, meet other delegates from across NY State, learn about careers in government, visit the state museum, Corning Tower and the list goes on. If you are interested visit our website and fill out the application and submit to the 4-H office by Friday, March 29th to be considered. We will select 2 delegates to attend this great opportunity. Do you know a college bound relative, neighbor or friend who might be undecided in their course of study and might consider horticulture, botany or its many related fields? The Cornell Cooperative Extension of Erie County Master Gardener Program volunteers are pleased to announce the 2019 Cornell Cooperative Extension Erie County Master Gardener College Scholarship. To be eligible for the scholarship, students must be an Erie County resident, attend school in Erie County and be accepted by a recognized, accredited college or university to study horticulture, botany or a related field. Related fields may include: agriculture, entomology, environmental sciences, environmental engineering, forestry, genetics, landscape design, sustainable agriculture, urban geography and urban planning. The selected recipient will receive a one-time award of $1,

3 Livestock Notes Tammi Kron, 4-H Livestock Program Educator Upcoming Livestock Dates: Dairy Exhibitors are currently meeting each Thursday evening at the Langford Fire hall to practice for Dairy Bowl from 7-8:30 p.m. Thank you to Carl Niefergold for working with our members and preparing them for the contest. Our county dairy bowl will be held on Monday, February 25 at 7 pm at the Langford Fire hall when we will put our teams together for the District Contest that will be held on Saturday, March 2 at Pioneer School. Horse Program: Updates February 27 & March 9, 2019 Horse Communications at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Eden registration will close on our website, Monday, February 11 Public Presentation: A gentle reminder that ALL youth planning to exhibit any animal(s) at the fair MUST do a public presentation. Events are coming almost finished. If you missed the dates and are showing an animal of any type at the fair contact Tammi at tlk6@cornell.edu ASAP. Generic #1 Meeting Information: Tuesday, February 26 at 6:55 pm at East Concord Fire hall. We will be holding our Generic #1 Meeting focusing on Marketing. This meeting will consist of 3 dates and you are required to attend 2 of the 3 meetings to receive your 1 meeting credit. Come and learn how to solicit new buyers and present yourself and your project. It will be a fun and interactive atmosphere with lots of opportunities to learn things that will benefit you now and in the future. Mark your calendar for these dates: Tuesday, February East Concord Fire hall at 6:55pm, Wednesday, March 13 at CCE at 6:55pm and Tuesday, April 2 at CCE at 6:55pm. Please note: I understand the commitment for this meeting is high, but the knowledge each member will walk away with will be worth the commitment. Remember we have many other meetings to also choose from to get your requirements, but if you want to learn the skills of marketing Generic 1 is a great choice. Llama/Alpaca Meeting Our next Llama/Alpaca meeting will be held on Tuesday, April 30 at 6 p.m. at CCE. Poultry/Meat Rabbit Meeting WEDNESDAY, February 13 at 7:00 pm We will be taking Turkey and Chicken orders. Payment is expected on February 13. I will be placing the turkey order the following day so orders will close on WEDNESDAY, February 13 for turkeys. Cost is 3/$21.00 for turkeys with 1 additional free to donate to the WNY Food Bank and Chickens are $2.00 each and you must purchase a total of 6. Each chicken participant will receive 2 Freedom Rangers to be donated to the WNY Food Bank. VOLUNTEERS WANTED: On Thursday, February 14, 2019 I will be doing a Science Fair for Orchard Park schools. I am in need of a few volunteers to assist with hands on activities from 6-8 p.m. Adults and youth are invited to help, if you are available and willing please contact me as soon as possible. 4 What is Duds to Dazzle? Written by 4-H Member, Loren Atkins Duds to Dazzle is a 4-H program that encourages leadership, teamwork, and creativity. Teams of 3-5 members are given an hour to complete a challenge using their sewing and textile skills. Even if you don t think your sewing skills are up to the challenge, have no fear! There are more team-member tasks to do than just sewing. During the competition, your team has one hour to design and create a new textile based on the category your scenario gives you: Wearable, Non-wearable, or Accessory. Within that hour your team has to incorporate a minimum of three items from a supply closet into the finished item and has to write a two to five minute presentation which your team presents at the end of the hour. There are plenty of tasks that do not include sewing, and besides, since there is only one hour to create the item, few teams take the risk of using sewing techniques beyond the basics. If you would like to participate in Duds to Dazzle, you can assemble your own team of three to five members and come up with a fancy name, or you can register as an individual and be placed on a team. Team leaders often reach out to the other members of the team and take the responsibility of dividing up the supply kit list and communicating with each member to make sure the person has no difficulty bringing the items on their list, making sure that there is no confusion about the event or event date, and making sure everyone is communicating ideas and strategies with each other. Duds to Dazzle is not a competition against the other teams. Each team is judged and given points on team preparation, item construction, and team presentation. Each team is presented with a Blue, Red, or White ribbon based on their total score. I have participated in Duds to Dazzle every year since it first started three years ago. I think it is fun and challenging, and the challenge is more than worth it! Besides being able to learn new techniques from my teammates as we work together to create something beautiful, I ve had the privilege of seeing other teams work together to create beautiful, unique items! If you could measure creativity, Duds to Dazzle would set a new record high every single year. I would love to see more teams participating! Looking to do a club fundraiser? We are planning a Niagara Chocolate s candy bar fundraiser for the Spring. All orders and payments must be in to the 4-H Office by April 4:30p.m. Please contact the 4-H Office if you are interested!!

5 We need you! Are you a 4-H member with experience doing innovative community service? Are you a 4-H leader with expertise in the community? Then consider giving a workshop at Tomorrow s Leaders. On May 10 th and 11 th, the 4-H Youth Community Action Network (Youth CAN) is partnering with the Cornell University Civic Engagement Program Work Team to host a teen leadership conference in Buffalo called Tomorrow s Leaders. Over the course of two days, 4-H youth, volunteers, and community members will participate in youth-led community interactions and workshops that will help teens and adults increase their impact in their communities. Workshops will be on Saturday, May 11 th and are 45 minutes long. They can be about any topic that will help participants build their knowledge and/or skills related to how to improve their communities.
