We are a great county and state due to the fact that the majority of our citizens are willing to do their part to contribute to the overall wellbeing of our society. They feel an obligation to give back to their community and not just look to their own desires. Tennessee 4-H serves as a key player in educating youth about the need to give back to the places they live. 4-H members contribute hundreds of thousands of hours back to their community every year. Service is a hallmark of all 4-H programs, teaching youth about the importance of giving back, improving our communities and developing innovative solutions to solve problems, large or small. 4-H ers learn skills such as teamwork, critical thinking, community engagement and build a sense of compassion, confidence and pride. 3 Sandie Morton State Staff Sandie Morton, Accounting Specialist, Tennessee 4-H Foundation I graduated from Fulton High School in Knoxville in June, 1963, and in 1964 I attended Knoxville Business College taking accounting courses. I started to work at age 15 after school; and I had lots of interesting jobs. I then worked in accounts payable & receivables for Emery 5 & 10 stores (EMSCO) from 1967 until I came to UT in Glen and I were married on Dec. 2, 1967 and had a son, Michael Ray, June 10, He was born with a genetic disease and he died on Dec. 25, In Nov we became parents to our adopted son James Dustin, who passed away July 11, I started my career with the Agricultural Extension Service on June 22, 1981 as a Budget Clerk in the Extension Dean s office. I retired from the same job 26 years later as an Administrative Assistant on June 30, I had a very interesting 26 years working for Extension, and my how that job has changed. All bookkeeping and accounting was done by hand with a calculator. I received the first computer in Extension in 1992 and it made life a lot easier. Of course, the faster work is done the more you have to do. I worked for several different Deans and Associate Dean s, through the years, somehow they all retired and I just stayed and stayed. I retired in 2007 and took care of my mother, she had dementia, from Feb until she died in Nov After that I volunteered at St. Mary s Hospital in several jobs. And finally, I volunteered at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church s Howard Circle of Friends daycare for adults with various stages of dementia. In 2013, Steve Sutton ask me if I would like to work part time in 4-H. The position was for the TN 4-H Foundation as a bookkeeper. I ve been here ever since! Sandie can be reached at smorton@utk.edu or

6 Jr. Livestock Expo Update: Beef Beef Expo Tie Space There is a Dairy Cattle show the week prior to Beef Expo. The barn area may not be fully cleaned out. We apologize for the inconvenience, but ask for everyone s cooperation and patience. Please DO NOT begin setting up in the barns until SATURDAY July 9. Please be courteous of the dairy exhibitors and arrange to setup your stalling area starting on SATURDAY July 9. We should have a tie assignment prepared early next week. Those cattle showing in the central region show will be stalled in the lower barn, to allow for time for management to clean out the upper barn. Beef Expo Parking The parking lot at the Livestock Center is under construction. I spoke with management today, and we should not have any issues parking trailers in the lot. The usual entrance is currently blocked off, but trucks and trailers may enter through the entrance closest to warehouse (stadium side). Again, we ask for everyone s patience. 6

9 Nominate a Volunteer for a National Award! 2017 Salute to Excellence Award for 4-H Volunteers The Salute to Excellence Award (STE) is a national program that recognizes 4-H volunteers who demonstrate exemplary service to 4-H, while promoting service through volunteerism as both an opportunity and a privilege. One volunteer will be selected from each Cooperative Extension Region (Northeast, South, North Central, and, West) in each of two categories. Each region will have its own Outstanding Lifetime Volunteer and Volunteer of the Year. The eight regional honorees become nominees for the national award, and one candidate in each category will be named the national Honoree. Each state can nominate one volunteer in each of two categories. The Volunteer of the Year Award is for individuals who have served as 4-H volunteers for less than 10 years at the county or state level. The Outstanding Lifetime Volunteer Award is for individuals who have served 10 or more years at the county or state level. Volunteers are the heart of the 4-H program, providing nurturing environments and learning opportunities for youth as they develop and master life skills Salute to Excellence is a great way to show support and gratitude for their dedication. I hope you will take the time to nominate the most deserving 4-H volunteers from your county 4-H Program. 10 Tennessee 4-H Awarded $10,000 Sponsorship for Summer Camp STEM Experience Tennessee 4-H was awarded a $10,000 sponsorship from HughesNet to implement a "Summer Camp STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) Experience" during Junior 4-H camp this summer in Columbia, Crossville, and Greeneville, TN, as well as the Science on Saturday events at Lone Oaks in Middleton, TN. During Tennessee 4-H Junior Camp, youth statewide will experience STEM through a series of hands-on stations at 4-H Camp called SYSTEM (Students Yearning for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) Overload. Summer Camp STEM experiences are part of a national effort to spark youth interest in STEM education. Tennessee was one of four states selected to receive a Summer Camp STEM grant. The other states include Colorado, Kentucky, and Missouri. Youth at this year s Junior 4-H Camp will learn through intentional STEM camp activities. Examples will include the energy of zip-lining, the ecology of wildlife and nature, and the science of archery. National 4-H Council and HughesNet are dedicated to sparking an interest in STEM topics early, through hands-on, community-based STEM learning. In addition to Summer Camp STEM Experiences, HughesNet works with National 4-H Council to support STEM programs such as the 4-H Youth in Action STEM Award, National Engineering Week and National Youth Science Day the world s largest youth-led science challenge that engages young scientists from around the country. The effort includes a focus on communities where resources for science-focused community programs are often limited.
