1 Rotary International District 7390 John Kramb, Governor February 2016 Peace & Conflict Prevention/Resolution Month Fellow Rotarians, This past January I had the privilege of going to St. Marc, Haiti with members of the Rotary Club of Elizabethtown. We were visiting several schools which are sponsored by Rotarians, and also doing a service project. At the high school we visited was a young man who had been chosen as our tour guide for the visit. His was an inspirational story. For four years he was unable to come up with the tuition to finish school. As such, he had to drop out of school each year. Now, at age 22, he was finally is his last year of eligibility. In talking with him, we found out that he wants to pursue a Science degree in Biology in the States. After completion, he intends to return to Haiti to help his fellow countrymen. Unfortunately, he was still $250 short on this year s tuition and this is his final year of eligibility. That evening at dinner, we Rotarians discussed his situation. The next morning, people quietly contributed enough money not only to pay for the young man s tuition, but enough excess was donated to help pay for meals at the nearby grade school, where the poorest of the poor attend. And whose only meal that day might be the one they ate at school. How is this incident related to this month s theme? Haiti has the lowest per capita income in the western world. The level of poverty we saw there was astonishing. We Rotarians, through little acts of kindness, bring peace to some part of the world. Whether it is providing glasses to people in Ethiopia, clean water in Honduras, polio vaccinations in India, medical care in the Dominican Republic, or education in Haiti, we have provided a small sense of peace. Which is what we do! There are so many opportunities to do good in the world, and I encourage you and your club to find a need, and fill it. Find a hurt and sooth it. Be a gift to the World! Yours In Rotary Service, John Kramb DG Inside this Issue: DG Selected, District Training Assembly 2 District Training Assembly Reg Form 3 Rotary Youth Exchange 4 District Conference 5-6 Club Activity, International Convention 7 Membership & Attendance Report, District Calendar FEBRUARY 2016 D7390 ROTAR-E-REPORTER 8

4 A Holiday Gathering was held on January 10 th at the 4H Center in York (the 4H members prepared the evening meal) to celebrate the announcement of the assignment of countries to the 7390 and 7620 students who were selected in November 2015 to participate in the long term Outbound program. Approximately 100 people attended the celebration including Inbounds, Host parents of Inbounds, Club YEOs and Counselors, newly selected Outbounds, the parents of the Outbounds, Rotex (past youth exchange students) and District Youth Exchange Officers. The announcement of assigned countries was done by presenting the country s flag to each of the newly selected Outbounds. The inbounds, wearing their Rotary Blazers with many pins, shared their culture by bringing a dish (a side dish or dessert) that was native to their country for all of the attendees to sample. And Rotex were there also to help celebrate the country announcements and support the exchange students. Prior to the country announcement, welcoming remarks were given by DGE Kevin Cogan who told everyone that the Holiday Gathering is really my favorite Rotary event of the year. The welcoming remarks were followed by District Inbound Chair Walt Tilley/RC of York and the introductions of each of the Inbounds and the native dish they prepared, and then followed by the presentation of the Outbounds by Amber Seidel/Rotex Denmark and District Outbound Chair and presentation of flags by Chris Perlick D7620 YE Chair. In the meantime Melissa Bruck was taking pictures of the new Outbounds for their business cards. DGE Kevin is no stranger to youth exchange as his son Sean was an exchange student in to Argentina. Per Kevin the Spanish skills that Sean developed as a result of YE paid off handsomely. Sean has since graduated from the University of Scranton majoring in International Studies and has received several promotions in the Army. (Sean Cogan is in the middle of the picture to the left.) To the readers of this article, please check out Generation World, a youth exchange newsletter Page/youth-exchange-newsletter that was rebooted in 2015 and is published once every four months. By reading all of the first three issues of 2015 you will learn more about D7390 s youth exchange from Rotex, past and current District YE Chair, a mother s perspective of her family s youth exchange experience hosting an Inbound from Ecuador and having two sons and a daughter who each had an experience of a lifetime as a Rotary Youth Exchange student (2 Short Term and 1 Long Term), plus information from our District Youth Exchange Inbound Chair, Outbound Chair and Lead Trainer to support any club in D7390 in their current or future participation with Rotary Youth Exchange. Additional information is on the district s website under youth exchange. By Linda Spotts, D7390 YE Chair FEBRUARY 2016 D7390 ROTAR-E-REPORTER 4
