2 New Staff Orientation and Back-to-School In-Service Schedule - August 2016 PLEASE NOTE: The dates for this schedule are firm, but the activities scheduled for respective dates are somewhat tentative yet, subject to processing requirements (fingerprinting, blood work, chest x-ray, etc), and final determination of in-service topics. August 16 to August 18 are getting to know Kuwait and UAS days. Tuesday, August 16 & Wednesday, August 17, 2016 (New Teachers) 1. New teachers arrive in Kuwait and settle into living quarters. 2. New overseas hires visit the Business Office to collect salary advances if needed, and to collect the settling-in bonus. New teachers can collect these amounts on both August 16 and 17 after 9:00 a.m. 3. Shopping at 10:00 am on August 16 & 17, Meet in School lobby Go to Sultan Center, Hawally. The Welcoming Committee will organize this event. Thursday, August 18, 2016 ( New Teachers) 8:00-9:00 a.m. Breakfast for New Teachers in the Basement of Hawally Hilton. (Housing Complex across the street from the school) Coordinated by Staff Welcoming Committee. 9:10-11:00 a.m. New Teachers Orientation in the School Library Meet Administration. Welcome to UAS Superintendent. Introduction of Administrative Team. Introduction of New Teaching Staff Calendar. Handbooks Student/Parent and Staff. Forms Leaves, Requisitions, Professional Development, etc. Q & A Distribute Classroom Keys to New Staff. Building Tour or visit the Business Office if necessary. (Tour with Mr. McMurray/Mrs. Khaja) 12:00-1:00 p.m. New Overseas Employees take photos in the Multi-purpose Room for Civil I.D. Paperwork. 1:00 2:00 p.m. Lunch in Hawally Hilton basement Coordinated by Welcoming Committee. 2

3 2:00 3:00 p.m. Meet with Mrs. Sawsan Mohamed, Human Resource Director - All papers/forms requested by HR should to be submitted at this time. 3:45 p.m. Bus leaves the Hawally Hilton to go to Carefour Avenues, or to another mall for shopping. 5:45 p.m. Bus leaves shopping location, to return to the Hawally Hilton. Saturday, August 20, New Teachers Only 10:30-11:30 a.m. Presentation: Cultural Awareness/History of Kuwait Mrs. Sarah Borisly. Presentation: Maintaining a Balance - Mrs. Andrea Al-Adwani. Session location: UAS Library 11:45 a.m. Lunch in the Multi-Purpose Rm. Compliments of Mrs. Noura Al Ghanim. 7:00 p.m. Neighborhood walk (optional): Meet in Hilton Lobby Conducted Mr. David McMurray and Ms. Sarah Muller. Sunday, August 21, 2016 (New & Returning Teachers Report to Work) 8:00-8:30 a.m. Welcome with the Owner and Superintendent in the Auditorium. 8:40 10:00 a.m. Meetings with Respective Division Principals. 10:00-12:00 p.m. Edline Presentation in the Auditorium with Mrs. Debbie Harris & Mrs. Inas Mahmoud (New Staff Only). 12:00-1:00 p.m. Lunch on Your Own. 1:15-2:15 p.m. Independent Preparation for the School Year New Teachers may network with Veteran Teachers. 2:15-3:00 p.m. Curriculum Areas of Focus in 2016/2017 Mrs. Erin Witthoft and Mrs. Mona Salem. Tuesday, August 23, 2016 (All Teachers) 8:30 9:00 a.m. Emergency Procedures Protocols: 8:30 Lockdown (hear the horn, review procedure). 8:40 Fire Drill (Walkthrough process and marshalling station). 9:00-11:30 a.m. Meet with Respective Principals for Division Level Discussions. 11:30-12:30 p.m. Lunch on Your Own. 1:00-2:00 p.m. MAP Overview and expectations (Auditorium) 2:00-4:00 p.m. Insurance Coverage Auditorium. Banking New Staff only Auditorium. 4:30 5:15 p.m. Trip to the Teacher Supply Store Suzann Al Othman Meet in School Foyer. *** Note School funds are not available to support Purchases made for classroom materials. Wednesday, August 24, 2016 (All Teachers) 8:00 11:00 a.m. Meetings with Respective Division Principals. 9:00 11:00 a.m. Scope and Sequence Meeting for Returning Science (ES/MS/9 th ) grade Teachers with Mrs. Erin Witthoft and Mrs. Mona Salem (UAS Library) 11:00-12:00 p.m. Lunch on Your Own. 12:15-3:00 p.m. Independent Preparation Time. 6:00-8:30 p.m. Staff Dinner at the Palm Palace Restaurant for the Admin Team and New Staff. 5 8:00 9:30 a.m. Meetings with Respective Division Principals. 9:45 11:00 p.m. Curriculum mapping with grade level/course level colleagues. Vertical Department Meetings for Specialist Teachers (ex. All IT Teachers, PHE, etc) 11:00-12:00 p.m. Lunch on your own. 12:00-1:30 p.m. Meet with Division Level Principals for first student-day final preparations. 1:30-2:30 p.m. Independent Preparation for the School Year. 6:00-8:00 p.m. Shopping Trip (Sultan Center, Salmiya) Welcoming Committee. Friday, August 26, 2016 GUST International Teacher s Dinner and Cultural Event. (5:30 9:00 p.m.) (A bus for UAS Staff will leave at 5:00 p.m. from the Teacher Residence) *** although optional, this is a good introductory activity to network with other international teachers. Saturday, August 27, 2016 Free Weekend (building is not available on Friday).
