My name is Paula Simons and I am your area representative this year. I am a first year graduate student at Texas A&M University, and I hope to give you all the information you need in these seasonal newsletters. Also, they will have several fun, new companies come to their meetings to attract new members. They are also planning a trip to Chicago as well as the IFT 11 trip to New Orleans. One of our major events for the year is competing against other universities in a Food Science quiz bowl. 3 Chapter of the Year 2010 Chapter of the Year Think your chapter has Winner: what it takes to be this North Carolina State 2011 Chapter of the Year? Then consider entering in this competition. The winner receives a plaque and a monetary prize. Get started now, as the deadline to submit your chapter for the competition is May 1, The rules and submission information can be found at Community/IFTSA/ChapterOfTheYearRules.pdf COY Chair: Bridget McClatchey (mccl0351@umn.edu) PAGE 3 Undergraduate Research Paper If you have been participating in an independent research project, then the Undergraduate Research Competition is for you. The competition is open to any IFTSA undergraduate member who has participated in original research, and who has not graduated by July 1 of the year prior to the competition. Entrants are asked to submit a letter of intent to enter, an abstract describing the research (500 words or less), and a verification letter from the Food Science Department Head. March 1: Last day to submit intent-to-enter. March 15: Abstracts are due. May 8: Finalists will be notified. College Bowl Competition Since 1985, the IFTSA College Bowl Competition has tested the knowledge of student teams from across the United States in the areas of food science and technology, history of foods and food processing, food law, and general IFT/food-related trivia. The College Bowl, sponsored by the IFT Student Association, General Mills, Inc. and PepsiCo, Inc., is designed to facilitate interaction among students from different universities, stimulate the students' desire to accumulate and retain knowledge, and provide a forum for students to engage in friendly competition. Each contestant must be a member of the Student Association of IFT, 2010 College Bowl Winner: University of Georgia College Bowl Competition Chair is: Helen Melito (hsmelito@gmail.com) Interested in competing? Each team needs to send 25 new questions to the college bowl question pool. For more information, go to community/students/ competitions/college-bowl.aspx Product Development Competitions IFTSA Food Product Development This is a chance for students to take all of the skills and knowledge learned in school and apply them to a real-world situation. Each participating school's team develops a new food idea and carries the concept through marketing and production, much like a commercial product development team. 4 PAGE 4 Developing Solutions for Developing Countries The Student Association is committed to engaging student members from around the world and utilizing their scientific skills to serve a bigger cause. The Developing Solutions for Developing Countries (DSDC) competition promotes the application of food science and technology and the development of new products and processes that are targeted at improving the quality of life for people in developing countries Winners: International: 1st Place International: Bogor Agricultural University - Crantz Flakes Domestic: 1st Place National: Penn State University - CalciMelo IFTSA Disney Product Development Eligibility The team s home base must be within the fifty states, District of Columbia, Canada (excluding Quebec), or Mexico, All members of the team must be IFTSA members, All members of the team must be from the same university, The team must consist of no less than two and no more than five students, The teams may either be all under- graduate or all graduate students, No team member should be an employee of Disney Consumer Products, Inc., its parent or affiliate companies, the advertising, promotional or fulfillment agencies of any of them, nor a member of the household or immediate family of such employee.
