1 Volume 97 Issue 3 Spring Issue 2018 GUEST SPEAKER With a rich background and 43 years experience, GFWC Secretary Suellen Brazil is a dynamic leader whose dedication and passion are unwavering. From , Suellen served first as GFWC Alabama Director of Junior Clubs and later as GFWC Junior Education Chairman. In 1985 Suellen became HOBY International Leadership Seminar National Volunteer Chairman and then Region Director. These roles led to 12 years of national service to-accompanied by extensive growth within-the Hugh O Brian Youth Foundation. During 40 years on the GFWC Alabama Board, Suellen has served in all appointed/elected offices including GFWC Alabama State President ( ) where policy improvements she championed continue to impact Alabama today. She has organized exceptional training opportunities as State Leadership Chairman, including seminars at the State Capitol. After serving as state president, Suellen successfully led the GFWC Safety program, Credentials Committee, and GFWC Southern Region as treasurer, secretary, vice president, and president. As president, she visited the Woman s Club of Aruba to welcome them to Southern Region. As chair of the GFWC Leadership Committee in , she oversaw a 73% increase in GFWC State LEADS programs. A native Alabamian, she and husband Billy have two sons. In 2014 Suellen retired from Baldwin County Schools after 44 years-her final position being Executive Elementary Administrator supervising 28 elementary schools and 18,000 students. Working with domestic violence prevention, Honor Flight Alabama, and GFWC local keeps her closely connected to grassroots service. 1

2 BLOOM WHERE YOUR PLANTED This is the Call to the 113 th Annual GFWC Wyoming Convention. I am pleased to announce to all of you the 2018 GFWC Wyoming Convention will be held in Cheyenne at the Little America Hotel on April 27 th and 28 th. Information is enclosed about making reservations. President-Elect Mary Lee Dixon and her Convention Committee have been hard at work to make this Convention memorable. This is a special gathering as we will be installing the GFWCWyoming administration. Their biographies are included. These are all special and talented ladies. Please, give them your support. Our International GFWC keynote speaker will be Suellen Brazil, GFWC Recording Secretary. She will also be attending the Past State Presidents Dinner on Thursday evening, April 26, and will be giving a workshop during the Convention. She is a delightful and accomplished lady. Enclosed are contest forms (and the Creative waiver) and all the information you will need for the Convention. There will be fundraising opportunities. The contests are a way for our wonderful Club Women to showcase their talents. Plus, your Club will receive 10 points on your Rating Guide for each entry! I invite each of you to attend the 2018 Convention. If you cannot attend all of the activities, try to attend what you can. It is a great time to renew old friendships and make new ones. 7 SLATE OF OFFICERS FOR GFWC-Wyoming President Mary Lee Dixon Mary Lee has been a GFWC clubwoman since She has chaired various club committees such as Women s Issues, Military Outreach, and the Ways and Means committee. She has served as a Corresponding Secretary, Second Vice-President, First Vice-President, and President for the Women s Civic League of Cheyenne. With state offices, she has held positions for Domestic Violence Chair and Advocate for Children. Mary Lee has served as Vice President for the state which published monthly News Blast as well as well as twice yearly Call to Convention issues. She is currently serving as President Elect. This position is the Dean of Chairman, working with Club Presidents on reporting and awards for the annual convention. She is married to Dennis Dixon and they have 2 sons and 2 grandsons. GFWC-Wyoming President Elect Nancy Kaufman I am a Pediatric Physical Therapist with my own private home health practice in Cheyenne. My husband Steve and I moved to Cheyenne in 1987 from North Carolina and our two sons, Alex and Zach, were born here. Despite moving to Fort Collins in 2003 for Steve s work, the boys and I are proud to be from Wyoming and maintain strong ties here. I have served on multiple non-profit boards in Wyoming and Colorado including Cheyenne Respite, Cheyenne Symphony Orchestra, Laramie County Medical Alliance, Youth Orchestra of the Rockies, and Front Range Chamber Players. It was my honor to be president of all but the later organization. In 1999 I joined WCLC and have been active since. I have held multiple board positions over the years including serving as President once and Christmas House Chair twice. I continue to serve actively on that board. I coordinated the GFWC Wyoming State Convention in I have served as GFWC Wyoming District President now District Liaison and continue my participation at the state level as Vice President. In 2015 I represented GFWC Wyoming as their LEADS candidate. I am very proud to be associated with GFWC and am constantly in awe of the amazing women I have the privilege of working with both the club and state levels. 7

8 GFWC Wyoming Vice President Trish Peoples Trish is currently the President of GFWC Women s Civic League of Cheyenne and the First Vice President of X-JWC in Cheyenne. She s a graduate of GFWC s LEADS program and Wyoming s International Outreach Chairman. Trish spent a career in the United States Air Force, retiring in 2010 as a Lieutenant Colonel. Her duty assignments included Patrick Air Force Base, Florida; Loring Air Force Base, Maine; European Command, Stuttgart, Germany; Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado; Vandenberg Air Force Base, California; and F.E. Warren Air Force Base, Wyoming. She currently works as the Adjutant/Quartermaster for the Veterans of Foreign Wars Department of Wyoming and as a Substitute Teacher at East High School in Cheyenne. Trish and her husband, Rod, have two children: Khamis and Derek. GFWC-Wyoming Secretary Carolyn Turbiville I was born, raised and educated just north of the Black Hills area of South Dakota. After graduating from Black Hills State College (University) in 1968, I arrived in Cheyenne, WY and have been here for 50 years. I taught two years in a rural school in S.D. and 31 years of first and second grade in Cheyenne retiring in I have traveled extensively having been to all 50 states and all continents. I spent 25 years doing dog therapy in nursing homes, hospitals, and schools. I ran the National Therapy Dogs office in Cheyenne, for 5 ½ years. I now have a wonderful rescued Chihuahua named Coco as a faithful companion. He is not therapy dog material. I am serving as president of Wyoming State Museum Volunteers, my 5 th time over some years. I served 1 year as secretary and do the monthly volunteer calendar along with volunteering at the visitor s desk. I joined X-JWC in 2010 and was put to work immediately on the Ways and Means Committee. I have chaired fundraisers many times. I did my stint as 2 nd Vice President, President elect and President. I have been doing the Hotline (newsletter) for 6 years. This year I am Education Chairman and started an exciting program of having X-JWC members volunteer in classrooms to help teachers and students. 8

9 GFWC-Wyoming Treasurer- Marcia Volner Marcia Volner joined the Woman s Club of Rock Springs in December of 2013 after retiring. The club helped Marcia to continue helping others through volunteering. She was the 2017 LEADS candidate for Wyoming. Offices held in the Woman s Club of Rock Springs include correspondence secretary, conservation chairman, juniors special program chairman and currently president. She is also on the publicity committee and sends out articles to local newspapers and The Clubwoman. She was responsible for setting up the club web page and reviving the club Facebook page. The past two years Marcia has been responsible for the raffle at the annual house and helping with advertising for this event. State responsibilities have been Chairman of the Writing Contest and Chairman of Juniors Special Program. Marcia Volner grew up in Illinois and received a degree in teaching Deaf and Hard of Hearing K-12. She also received a degree in general special education from the University of Wyoming. During her 26 years as a teacher, consultant and trainer she also became a certified autism specialist. She worked with the state waiver program in Wyoming for people with disabilities as a provider, case manager and support broker. She has done training for preschools through the state STAR program. Marcia was married to Tom Volner in Tom became a GFWC booster in They are parents of two children Heather Volner Herndon of Casper and Aaron Volner of Rock Springs. LEAD s CANDIDATE - KAREN KENT I was born and raised in Wyoming. My father was an engineer for the state which caused our family to move quite often. I valued that learning experience and am lucky to know my state. I am a graduate of UW with B.S. degrees in microbiology and medical technology. I have been employed as a Med Tech and/or microbiologist for most of my adult life however I did take a 14 year break to open my own bakery, a catering business, and bake for Great Harvest Bread Company. I then returned to lab work part time and became the lab manager. Even though I have worked mostly full time, my husband and I raised 2 amazing boys and I found time to contribute to my community. I have volunteered for the YMCA, ARC of Laramie County, DePaul Guild, Celebrate Pink, Art for the Cure, and GFWC Women s Civic League of Cheyenne, holding various leadership positions. I am excited to be your LEADS 2018 representative. I never really considered myself a leader, just passionate about what I do. I look forward to learning how to help others find their passions! 17 Membership photography contest rules 2018 If you plan to provide pictures for the convention photo contest, please read the specific rules and requirements pertaining to each contest. The deadline for submission is April 1, There will be Best of Show, 1 st place, 2 nd place and 3 rd place winners for all 5 categories. The following rules apply to the five judged categories. A Year in Pictures: This category is the GFWC Calendar Contest and features photographs depicting the 12 months of the year, providing members the opportunity to showcase their talents while supporting GFWC through the fundraising calendar and photography contests. A World in Pictures: This category has three separate subjects: Living things: adults, animals, children, domestic birds, fish, flowers, insects, reptiles, wildlife. Scenes: city, landscapes, rural, skies, sunrise, sunset, waterscapes, weather. Still Life: abstract (any assemblage of objects either in an arranged or natural setting, buildings, monuments. Volunteers in Action: These pictures should capture GFWC members in action as they engage in volunteer activities. Each entry must include a completed Photo Contest entry form, and if you should win Best of Show and would like your photo to be submitted to the National Contest, you must also complete the Arts Waiver form. For the forms contact Photography Chair, Bev Campbell, bcampb0831@bresnan.net or go to the GFWCwyoming.org website or GFWC.org website. Deadline for entry is April 1, You will need to bring or arrange for entry delivery and pickup at the convention exhibit site. If you are unable to attend the convention you may ask another club member to take and/or pick up your photograph(s). Entries will be handled with care, but the committee cannot be responsible for loss or damage. Rules pertaining to all contests: Photographers must be dues paying members of an active Wyoming club. Photos must be taken during contest year January 1 Dec 31 (i.e., January 1 Dec ) for 2018 contest. Each photo must have a label affixed to the back of the photo with the following information: 1. Contest category name 2. Photographer s name, address, mailing address, phone number 3. Name of sponsoring club and state 17

18 4. Brief caption giving location and other notes about the photo 5. Title of the photo. 6. Please draw an arrow on the back to indicate the top Photos must be taken using film or digital camera Pictures must be summited manually. Electronic submissions will not be considered. Please protect your photo entry, as damaged photos will not be judged. Date stamps should not appear on the photographs. Contestants must be amateur photographers; earning from photography may not exceed $500 annually. Photos that are not being sent to GFWC National for the national contest need to be picked up. Photos summited to National will not be returned. Contest Photography entry form and signed Art Waiver must be submitted by the deadline. If your picture(s) wins best of show and you do not want your winning picture(s) sent to National GFWC you do not need to sign the waiver. If there is no signed waiver submitted with the entry form the picture will not be submitted to National GFWC. The state Photograph Chair will submit the appropriate winning pictures that meet the national rules to GFWC by May 15. Pictures must be 8 x10 and mounted on an 8 x10 mount board with an overall thickness not to exceed 3/8. No mats frames, or hangers. The same image may be submitted to multiple photo contest, but separate photos must be entered into each category contest. Photos must be the original work of the member. All entry forms must be submitted and postmarked by April 1, 2018 to the State Photography Chair Bev Campbell. The winners of Photos sent to National for Livings things, Scenes, Still Life and Volunteers in action may receive awards of 1 st place $100, 2 nd place $75 and 3 rd place $50. If you are selected as the winner for the Year in Pictures, your photograph will be sent to National for the calendar of the year contest. There is no monetary award for the Year in Pictures (calendar). Only one from each state can be submitted to National GFWC. 18
