2 what snewatdu Students INVITED to VENTURE OUTDOORS This semester, the Office of Student Activities will be working with Venture Outdoors to sponsor weekend outdoor recreational programming. Through a generous donation from the R.K. Mellon Foundation, students will have the opportunity to participate in various outdoor activities every Saturday, such as White Water Rafting, Rock Climbing, Horseback Riding, Kayaking/Canoeing, Caving, Downhill Skiing and Snowboarding and Cross Country Skiing. Resident assistants, commuter assistants, fraternities and sororities and student organizations are urged to make use of these opportunities to strengthen their organizations and their communities through bonding during these activities. Individual students are also encouraged to take advantage of these opportunities. Michael Passatore, Rebecca Jamrozik, Amanda Thompson WELCOME NEW Greek Life DIRECTOR We will be seeing a new face in the Office of Greek Life. Rebecca Jamrozik, our new director of Greek Life, will advise the fraternities and sororities on campus along with the Interfraternity and Panhellenic Councils. She will work closely with chapter advisors, students and staff to continue the success of the Greek Life program. Rebecca graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism and Political Science from Ohio State University, where she was very involved with her sorority, Alpha Chi Omega. She later served her sorority as a Collegiate Leadership Consultant and went on to receive her Master of Arts degree in College Student Affairs from the University of South Florida. During her two years at the University of South Florida, she was also the Greek Life graduate advisor. She then served as Assistant Director of Student Activities at John Carroll University, working closely with the Greek community. On behalf of the Duquesne community, welcome Rebecca! Tickets may be purchased at the Union Information Desk for $10 per activity. This includes the cost of transportation and a boxed lunch and whatever equipment is needed for the activity. For more information, please visit NEW in DORI for Fall 07 DORI and Self-Service Banner welcome you back for the fall 2007 semester. Don t look for WebAdvisor, anymore; you ll find registration, grades, class listings, online bookstore search and more in Banner, which you access through DORI (Duquesne Online Resources and Information). DORI also has online tools and connections to Duquesne news and campus events. If you haven t been on DORI lately, you may need to update your MultiPass account and password. This fall, you will also be able to use your MultiPass password to access Blackboard and WebMail. You ll find instructions to reset your password on the DORI login page, MRC NEARS COMPLETION Beginning in January 2008, Duquesne students will have full access to new and improved recreation space in the new Multipurpose Recreation Center (MRC) on Forbes Avenue. Floors 2, 3 and 4 of the 130,000 square foot building will be dedicated to students recreational needs. The second floor will house a fitness center, complete with an aerobics studio, cardio-weight machines, locker rooms and an audio-visual classroom. On the third floor, students will find a basketball/volleyball court, three work-out studios, and additional locker rooms. An indoor walking track on the mezzanine level will overlook the third floor. An additional basketball court, racquetball courts and a free-weight room are included on the fourth floor. Each floor also includes student lounges with wireless access. When the MRC opens, students will also be able to enjoy the public amenities available on the first floor. These include a new full service restaurant, The Red Ring, the Jambo Juice Bar and an enhanced Barnes and Noble Bookstore with a Starbucks café.

3 GUMBERG LIBRARY UPDATES what snewatdu The Gumberg Library has computers for students to search DuCat, the library's online catalog, and to access research databases, electronic journals, newspapers and e-texts. You will need your Duquesne University ID to access the library's electronic resources. The Gumberg Library has 33 circulating laptops that students can use in the library. This service is very popular among undergraduate students. In fact, last year, 80% of the borrowers were undergraduates. Laptops circulate for three hours with one renewal if there is no waiting line. Check it out! Gumberg Library's Curriculum Center a la "Extreme Makeover" has a whole new look, more space, new technology, new die-cut designs, a mini lounge area and more. It's bigger, brighter, and better than ever! Stop by the 5th floor of the library and see for yourself. A Gumberg Library reference librarian is available to answer your questions in person, on the phone, through or via online chat. Watch for details, coming soon, about a 24/7 reference service called Ask Here PA! The Gumberg Library is THE place to study for students. During spring finals last year an all-time record occurred with 4,516 users passing through the front doors. There is space in the library for group study as well as individual study carrels. Certain floors are designated "Quiet Zones." Students asked for it, and the library listened! NEW HEAD COACHES for Women s Teams Suzie McConnell-Serio and Tim Zundel, respectively, will lead the Duke s women s basketball and women s soccer programs in McConnell-Serio was named to lead the Dukes on April 13, following the resignation of 14-year head coach Dan Durkin. Recently named to the Women s Basketball Hall of Fame, the Pittsburgh native is one of the most highly decorated players in the history of women's basketball and is the owner of over 300 wins as a high school head coach and was a former WNBA Coach of the Year. Zundel accepted his first collegiate head coaching position on July 27 after prior head coach James Walker accepted a men s coaching position at Penn State. Zundel, a four-year assistant coach at Duquesne, will run the program on an interim basis this season. He helped recruit freshmen classes in 2006 and 2007 that were rated in the top 20 by Soccer Buzz Magazine in the Mid-Atlantic Region.

4 DUscene SHARE YOUR SPIRIT with SPIRITAN CAMPUS MINISTRY Spiritan Campus Ministry welcomes all students, especially our new freshman class. Who are we and what do we do? Spiritan Campus Ministry is a small group of religious and lay professionals representing three countries: United States, Africa (Nigeria) and Scotland! Our sole purpose for being here is you we are available to respond to your needs in any way we can. If you are looking to share your gift of music, come and be part of our liturgical music ministry. If you would like to be a Eucharistic minister, a Proclaimer of the Word or a minister of Hospitality, come and join over 150 other students who serve in this way. Maybe you would like to develop your knowledge of your Catholic faith, come to our Catholic Bible Study or to a dynamic Faith Alive group. There are a number of other opportunities to gather in good company. These include Big Question Night with dessert, Women of Spirit, and RCIA for those who are interested in exploring the Catholic faith tradition. Share your spirit of justice with our many opportunities for outreach and service to those less fortunate than ourselves. These include Saint Vincent DePaul, inner city ministry, CEL (Consistent Ethic of Life), Evergreen, Urban Plunge, and trips to Appalachia, Florida, New Jersey, and New Orleans. We have a mission trip to the Dominican Republic coming next summer! We support and encourage all faith traditions and have solid, collaborative relationships with our Muslim students, our Christian Fellowship, Byzantine students and a newly formed Jewish students group. In all of these things, we give priority to making time for students, to be able to talk with them in a healthy, non-judgmental and supportive atmosphere. We say that Spiritan Campus Ministry is not a club or an organization, but a way of life. This is truly a remarkable place with amazing students. Come share your spirit and have experiences to last a lifetime! Check out our Web site for more information:

5 DUscene prideisalive MORE Opportunities to GET INVOLVED Students who become actively involved with campus organizations have the chance to influence life at Duquesne University as well as further develop skills that complement those learned in the classroom. With more than 150 recognized student organizations at Duquesne, there are countless opportunities for you to make the most of your college experience. Our campus organizations represent a variety of interests (academic, social, service, governance, spiritual, political, performing arts, media and sport) and serve to enhance the overall atmosphere at the University. Whether you enjoy coordinating events, supporting service initiatives or writing for the student newspaper, there is an organization for you. To see a complete list of student organizations on campus or to learn more about these groups, please visit JUDICIAL BOARD MEMBERS WANTED If you have the qualities of honesty, fairness, respect for others, leadership and commitment to the Duquesne community, please consider applying for membership on the Judicial Board. As a Board member you will be asked to instill and promote these qualities in other students while living the Mission of serving God by serving students. If you would like to apply for this position of great responsibility, contact Susan Monahan, Director of Judicial Affairs, at or monahans@duq.edu. SENIOR RUNNER SETS RECORD Several weeks after the spring semester ended, a number of Duquesne students were still representing the University on the athletic fields, including current senior track and field participant Tom Slosky. Slosky is the first Duke in school history to qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, having completed the task twice in the 3,000 meter steeplechase, as a sophomore in 2006 and as a junior in June Slosky, who also runs cross country for the Dukes, excels in several distance events in track. He holds the school record in the steeplechase as well as the 1,500 meter run and 5,000 meter run and was also a member of the record-setting 1,500 meter relay team. In cross country, he is a two-time All-Atlantic 10 honoree, having placed fourth at the A-10 Championship in 2005 and second in 2006.
