19 TH ANNUAL IRISH NIGHT ROW ON FOR BRENDAN Presented by UPMC Sunday, March 15, 2015 Central Catholic High School PROGRAM Bagpipe Introduction, George Balderose Guaranteed Irish Intermission Presentation of the Crew Clubs, the Brendan Foley Spirit Award, and the St. Brigid Award Guaranteed Irish Irish Night: Row On for Brendan 1

IRISH NIGHT ROW ON FOR BRENDAN Irish Night Row On for Brendan is a lively performance of Irish music and dance held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, as a tribute to Brendan Foley, who brightened the halls of Central Catholic High School, rowed for the school, and left the world a better place for his 15-and-a-half years of life. Thanks to the grace and generosity of Brendan s family and friends, Irish Night is also the principal fund-raiser for both Brendan s own Central Catholic Crew and for Oakland Catholic Crew. Irish Night allows Central Catholic Crew and Oakland Catholic Crew to purchase new rowing shells and oars each year to accommodate their growing programs and replace aging equipment. Now, Irish Night is in its 19th year, and over the past 18 years, Irish Night has raised more than $343,000. In 2014, Irish Night raised $32,203, and the concert s proceeds were shared with Oakland Catholic Crew for the seventh time. Irish Night Row On for Brendan is a proud tradition that allows Central Catholic Crew and Oakland Catholic Crew to continue to form lasting influences in the lives of the young men and women they train. 2 Irish Night: Row On for Brendan

BRENDAN FOLEY Brendan was born on May 25, 1981, and spent his first three weeks in neonatal intensive care due to complications at birth. Brendan was not the healthiest baby and made many visits to leading pediatric lung specialists, first at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, and then throughout the rest of his life at Children s Hospital in Pittsburgh. Brendan overcame his lifelong chronic asthma by earnestly involving himself in bicycling, soccer, basketball and rowing. He grew to 6 feet, 3 inches in height and weighed a very lean 140 pounds. He looked very out of place alongside the infants and small children in the intensive care unit at Children s where he spent his last two weeks in a coma following a serious accident. Brendan did very well in school. His scores were extremely high on all the standardized tests, and when he put his mind to it, he achieved high grades. A poem laid in Brendan s casket by one of his teachers was signed A+ as always. Brendan had artistic abilities as well. He was chosen for a writer s workshop, won prizes for his drawings, and people are still finding some of the hundreds of Origami figures he would make on the spot from any scrap of paper that was handy. Brendan played clarinet in both the Word of God grade school band and in the Central Catholic marching band. He easily learned a wealth of Irish tunes from his father, and he had a wonderful touch on the tin whistle. His mother and aunt taught him step-dancing and his performances were enjoyed by fellow dancers and audiences alike. Brendan was fairly well traveled. He had been to the four corners of the United States from Boston to Seattle to San Diego and Orlando. Brendan also visited Ireland, England and Mexico. In the summer of 1996 his family made a European rail trip where he visited Frankfurt, Amsterdam, Delft, Brussels, Paris, and Bern. The picture on his funeral card was taken at an outdoor restaurant in Brussels and his expression is one of pained tolerance for his Dad as a waiter was asked to take a family picture. Brendan seemed to have a gift for getting to know people and making friends. He showed a genuine interest in everyone he met. His love of life and goofy sense of humor endeared him to many folks of all ages. His caring personality reflected the strong love among his family and friends. In a nutshell, Brendan was a great kid whose life made a difference in this world. Irish Night: Row On for Brendan 3

Tragically, at 15 1/2 years of age, Brendan was taken from his family and friends on December 8, The exact details of his bicycle accident will never be known. Brendan was cycling home from the local video store with two Disney movies in his backpack. His parents had asked him to baby-sit his little sister Emma that night, and as usual he was thinking of how he could make the evening special for her. That afternoon a snow shower started as he was on his way home. Brendan made a deadly error in judgment that, coupled with a speeding truck, resulted in his being very harshly struck on Ardmore Boulevard at Braddock Road. Strangely, he had taken a route that he had promised his parents he would never use. No one will ever know what was on his mind as he attempted to cross Ardmore Boulevard. Many hundreds of people poured out their concern to the family. During each of his four viewings at the funeral home people spent over two hours waiting in line in order to talk to family members and say a few prayers at his casket. The funeral mass at St. Anselm s Church had over 800 people in attendance with 14 priests concelebrating and Brendan s crew from Central Catholic acting as pallbearers. During a sunny break on a dismal rainy day, a huge crowd assembled at Brendan s graveside where, amidst prayers and laments on the Highland pipes, he was laid to rest. Over the years many people have showed an interest in helping to keep Brendan s memory alive. Wonderful cards, letters, poems and music have been written, generous donations made to scholarship funds, plaques installed, and awards established. And this memorial concert, a celebration that s been kept alive for 16 years with the kind and unstinting help of his extended family and many friends, old and new. Brendan student, athlete, altar boy, musician, step-dancer, and a friend to many. 4 Irish Night: Row On for Brendan

THE BRENDAN FOLEY MEMORIAL TROPHY This trophy has been sculpted from ancient Irish oak found in a bog near Belfast, Northern Ireland. After resting there for well over 5,000 years, the bog oak has been transformed into an elegant tribute to the men who row, in memory of Brendan Foley. Sculptor Eamon Maguire selected the bog oak and carved into it the soul and passion of the currach, the boat used for many centuries by Irish fishermen. St. Brendan stands in the back, piloting a passenger across a stormy sea; without any doubt they will arrive safely on the other side. Celtic carvings of the currach and oars from the Book of Kells and 5th century ogham stones symbolize eternity, the spiritual beginning and end. The boat itself rests on a base of bog fir, as old and ancient as the bog oak, but with a slight tint of red. It was found near Spanish Point, Miltown Malbay, County Clare. Mr. Maguire has been carving ancient Irish oak and timbers for decades. His work has been exhibited in America, Sweden, England, Japan, and around the world. Also a maker of bodhrans, his Irish drums are much sought after. He is a master bodhran player himself, and teaches Irish set dancing every Friday. Eamon Maguire visited Pittsburgh several years ago and was befriended by the Foley family. It s providential that a rower, musician and Irish dancer is also the sculptor of this magnificent piece in tribute to a young man who received such great pleasure from those pursuits in his own life, Brendan Foley. The Brendan Foley Memorial Trophy is presented to the winners of the boys junior varsity eight race at the TRRA Scholastic sprints. The trophy is on display at Central Catholic High School. 10 THE BRENDAN FOLEY SPIRIT AWARD Several years ago, coach Sara Holland approached the Central Catholic Crew board about her desire to give a special award at the team s end-of-the-season banquet. It was an award she hoped the team would continue every year. She asked if she could contact Bruce and Maggie Foley about naming the award after Brendan. Sara had heard about Brendan s love and enthusiasm for the sport and felt that an award bearing Brendan s name would be appropriate. The following is an excerpt from Sara s poignant letter to Bruce Foley: I would like to start a new, and I hope, lasting tradition. I would like to give one of the boys a spirit award. As you may be aware, crew is very much a team sport, there are no Michael Jordans, no superstars. Rather, the boat must work together in order to achieve anything. Hence, I think an MVP award is inappropriate. However, there is always that one young man, who though he may not make the Varsity boat, shows up unfailingly for practice and roots loudly for the team at each and every race. I would like to acknowledge that spirit with this award. I am writing to you in hope that you might allow me to name the award after your son, Brendan. I was not blessed to know your son, but the support your family has provided to Central Catholic Crew in his name has been invaluable. I know that the boys would be honored to receive an award bearing his name, just as they are thrilled when they get to row in the Brendan Gerard Foley 8+. Bruce and Maggie liked the idea and philosophy of the award very much, and so, The Brendan Foley Spirit Award was created. The trophy was made by Pittsburgh Trophy, and sits in Central s trophy case giving its recipients recognition within the school as well as keeping Brendan s memory and spirit alive. The group has recorded three CDs and has opened for the Irish Rovers and appeared in many festivals, concerts and dances in Detroit; Cleveland; Pittsburgh; Annapolis, Md.; Rochester N.Y.; Boston, and many towns in Connemara, Co. Galway, Ireland. Visit their website for more information and a schedule of their appearances. Bruce Foley Bruce Foley was born and raised in upstate New York and is the sixth of 12 children. As ayoung man, he went on the road with three musicians from Ireland known as Carolan s Kind. He continued to tour for more than five years with various Irish musicians throughout the northeastern United States, gaining a broad repertoire of tunes and ballads along the way. Bruce first became familiar with the uilleann pipes in 1975 in Chicago with the legendary piper Joe Shannon. It would be 13 years before he was able to secure a full set due to the scarcity of pipe-makers and the high cost of having a set made. He was able to get a beautiful full set in 1988 from Kerry pipe-maker Alain Froment. Bruce is self-taught on guitar and whistle. He has performed on stage with Paddy Reilly, Paddy Keenan, James Kelly, Tommy Sands and other notable traditional musicians. He has played on a number of recordings supporting Gordon Bok, Cathal Dunne, Mike Gallagher, Anne Feeney, Heather Kroft and Denys Candy as well as music for several WQED special broadcasts. Bruce regularly travels to Ireland and takes pleasure in performing with local musicians in Connemara. He has been regularly featured at the Summerfest festival in Roundstone, Co. Galway, and recently performed live with Liz Kane on Connemara community radio. Irish Night: Row On for Brendan 9

Paddy Folan Accordion. Paddy started playing with Bruce in the late 70s when Bruce met his sister Maggie. Guaranteed Irish made a couple of trips to Ireland where the people seemed happy to hear three Yanks playing Irish music. Paddy got his first accordion, a single row Hohner, for Christmas when he was 10. An Irish priest that was visiting his grandmother taught him two songs. He played those two songs until the family finally told him to please play something else. He started practicing right after dinner every night. and by doing so, got out of doing the dishes. He is married for 25 years to Bridget Minnock, and they have three children, Claire, Brian (Central 02), and Annie. Jimmy Lamb Jimmy Lamb has long been entertaining Pittsburgh audiences with his own style of Irish folk music. He started his professional music career on the coffee house and bar circuits at Penn State in By 1984 Jimmy had acquired a great affinity for Irish music and a significant song list of Pittsburgh-Irish favorites, which he performed in various venues locally. He joined Bruce and Paddy in 1987 and has been part of Guaranteed Irish ever since, playing bass and acoustic guitar and providing vocals to much of their repertoire. By day, Jimmy manages the Ireland Institute of Pittsburgh, a non-profit organization dedicated to peace, reconciliation, and economic development in Ireland. He lives in Dormont with his wife Ann and their on Ciaran. Mike Gallagher Known primarily for performing Irish and Scottish folk, this native Pittsburgher has been a constant musical presence throughout the tri-state area.
