N. C. Central Howard Bowie State Saint Augustine s North Carolina A&T Grambling State North Carolina Central scored 13 unanswered fourth-quarter points to come back and knock off South Carolina State, 33-28, in the MEAC opener for both teams Thursday night in Durham, N.C. The back-and-forth battle of league contenders saw SCSU (1-2, 0-1 MEAC) lead at the half and score on a 9-yard run by QB Dewann Ford ( , 233 yards 2 TDs) with just :05 seconds left in the third quarter to lead Ford ran for a 7-yard second quarter score and threw two first-half TD passes. The Eagles began the final quarter by driving 70 yards in 14 plays and scoring on third-string quarterback Na il Ramadan s 20-yard hook-up with Jacen Murphy. The score pulled the Eagles (2-1, 1-0) within after a failed 2-point conversion. NCCU stopped the Bulldogs on a 3-and-out and on the second play after a punt, second-string QB Chauncey Caldwell (3-10-0, 74 yards, 2 TDs, 20 carries, 91 yards), who had replaced starter Michah Zanders early in the game, hit Josh McCoy wide open down the middle for the game-winning 38-yard score with 5:24 left. SCSU got the ball two more times but did not advance out of its own territory. Howard continued its stunning turnaround under first-year head coach Mike London Saturday scoring on a 5-yard run from QB Caylin Newton with 39 seconds left to knock off Bethune- Cookman in a key MEAC game Saturday in Washington, D. C. On the winning drive, the Bison (2-2, 1-0 MEAC) got the ball with 3:14 left after stopping B-CU (1-3, 0-1) on a questionable 4th-and-1 at the Wildcats 45-yard line. B-CU, up 24-20, could have punted after Howard had used all its timeouts. Instead, Newton ( , 157 yards) and the Bison drove for the winning score. In the drive, Newton ( , 157 yards, 1 TD), who ran for 140 yards on 22 carries, ran for six yards on 4th-and-6 from the B-CU 41 and completed a 25-yard pass to Jacquez Ezzard before running in from the 5.
