1 FFA s NEWERA SOUTH DAKOTA May 2011 Vol. 77 No. 3 LIVING 2 SERVE The blue corduroy jacket is a familiar symbol of the FFA organization, worn as part of official dress during most FFA activities. On April 11 at the South Dakota FFA convention in Brookings as part of the first ever SD FFA Day of Service, members removed their jackets and replaced it with an apron, hair net and plastic gloves to help fight hunger. This service project exemplified the portion of the FFA motto Living to Serve by teaming up with the Aberdeen based Kids Against Hunger (KAH) organization in packaging dry ingredient meals. KAH is a humanitarian food-aid organization whose mission is to significantly reduce the number of hungry children in the USA and feed starving children throughout the world. The meals consist of rice, soy, vegetables, vitamins & minerals. The food is designed to have high nutritional value and strengthen the immune system. Each package of food includes six one-cup servings. Each 32 lb. box of food holds 36 bags; each meal costs.23 cents. SD FFA members measured, poured, sealed and boxed 87,460 meals in assembly line fashion throughout the day long event. Members were logged in and out to keep track of service hours, which at days end totaled 460 hours. To help defray the cost of ingredients several businesses and individuals donated funds, among those a group of South Dakota agriculture cooperatives whose donations were matched by the Land O Lakes Foundation for a total of more than $11,000. FFA members left the event knowing that by giving a few minutes of their time they would make a significant difference in the life of a person less fortunate than themselves State Officers Elected At the 2011 State FFA Convention, "Infinite Potential" held in Brookings, April 10-12, fifteen candidates interviewed for the six leadership roles in SD FFA for the coming year. Individuals elected to South Dakota State FFA office will travel across the state throughout the year presenting speeches, workshops, camps, conferences, and conducting business for the SD FFA. Those selected to serve the SD FFA for are listed at right. Ambassadors are Paige Hermanson, Sturgis and Austin Vanderwal, Volga. Ambassador plaques were sponsored by Watertown FFA. The past six months have brought many lessons, joys and incredible people. The experiences have been breathtaking: standing on a ship that was carrying U.S.-grown corn at the port of Nagoya in Japan; having small but meaningful conversations with members from around the country; or a conversation with my neighbor on the airplane. All of these experiences have taught me about people and how agriculture cannot be surpassed in its importance. These experiences have taken me to 14 states and Japan for the following reasons Partnership Tours: California, Tennessee, Nebraska, Iowa, Minnesota, Texas State Conventions: Idaho, South Dakota, California, Rhode Island Chapter Visits: North Carolina, Indiana, Arkansas Other Experiences: Goodwill tour to Japan; Board of Directors, Department of Education, and Department of Agriculture meetings in Washington D.C.; Ag Education Summit in Florida. It is truly remarkable to see how diverse agriculture is nation/worldwide and how incredible people are involved. Through the places that I have traveled, it is still special to come home to my family and friends in South Dakota that makes me the happiest. Y all have changed me for the better and make me want to become the best I can be. Thank you for believing in me! I often get the question: What is your favorite part? For me, it is truly the little things that make the biggest difference: an encouraging word, listening ear or even having real, meaningful conversations. Giving because we can and loving others because it is right has truly made this year amazing for me. M. Thank you to all of the individual and business sponsors that made all aspects of convention possible! Without dedicated sponsors, the SD FFA would not be able to provide the opportunities which develop the infinite potential of our agriculture education students. In this time of lean school budgets, sponsors are crucial in keeping Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources programs in our schools. Advisors, stationed Here by the Owl are another key to the successes of local agriculture programs. If an advisor influenced you or someone you know, on a career choice, or life goals go to to share their impact. The SD FFA Foundation wants to say thank you and assist advisors in their efforts. WEBSTER SETS THE IMAGE WITH PUBLIC RELATIONS AWARD In everything FFA members do, they are representing the FFA. When someone sees them in the newspaper, on the internet, out in the community, or participating in Career Development Events, opinions are being formed not only of a certain chapter, but of the entire organization. The Image Builder Award is given to those chapters who have strived to build that positive impression through the media. At the South Dakota State FFA Convention held April 10-12, the winner of this year s Public Relations (Image Builder Award) award was recognized. Congratulations to the Webster FFA Chapter for their outstanding work and for being this year s Image Builder Award winner. Chapter leadership was developed through group involvement in developing a program of activities. To raise money, members started a two-acre sweet corn project and sold the corn at a local farmer s market. Community Development: Showcasing projects in Ag Awareness, Human Resources and Citizenship. Projects completed included restoring the local museum and constructing a room for agricultural displays. Members worked with the elderly by planting a garden and donating the produce, planting flowers around the nursing home, and donating fruit. Citizenship projects conducted by FFA members included two blood drives, a food drive that brought in almost 600 lbs of food, and fundraisers for the Red Cross and Give-A-Gift program. South Dakota ranks again AT national land & range The 60th Annual National Land & Range Judging Contest was held in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma with seven teams from South Dakota competing. Seven hundred teen FFA and 4-H members competed in the contest held May 3-5. Total registration for the event exceeded 1,000 people with coaches, sponsors, officials and group leaders in addition to the contestants. The FFA and 4-H participating teams qualified for the national event by placing among the top five teams at contests held in their home states. The first two days of the three-day event offered contestants opportunities to visit nearby practice sites to get acquainted with Oklahoma soils and plants with information available from soil experts. The actual contest site remained a secret until contest day, so no one had an unfair advantage. Contestants and coaches gathered on contest morning to discover the official location. They traveled to the site with a police escort, in a caravan of more than 100 vehicles spanning several miles. The event ended May 5 with an awards banquet in the Great Hall of the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum. Oklahoma Lt. Governor Todd Lamb welcomed the participants. Congratulations to the SD FFA teams, who placed as follows: LAND: 15th Willow Lake 58th McCook Central 76th Garretson 79th Wessington Springs RANGE: 5th Newell 15th Hitchcock-Tulare 22nd Webster For complete and individual results, visit L to R: Karen Swan, Alumni Supporter; Jodie Dunbar, Newell FFA Advisor; Makayla Heisler, Kristen Dunn, Coral Starr, Jonny Champion, Cady Olson, Brodie Shaykett, Tyler Swan, Jordan Brunner, TJ Swan, Butte County Extension Educator; Dave Ollila, Newell FFA Advisor 8
