6 6 Chapter Chatter Bowdle FFA - The Bowdle FFA Chapter had a busy spring. We held our 2nd annual Ag Fair with over 20 agriculturally related booths, over 30 agri-science fair projects and over 250 attendees from the area. Our Booster Club helped us host our annual Spring CDE with 10 schools attending. We were proud to have Blake Eisenbeisz elected as a State FFA Ambassador and there are several members attending Leadership Retreat this summer. In addition, students will also be attending Rangeland / Soils Days in Lemmon and will be completing SAE visits from our advisor. Faulkton FFA - For our Faulkton FFA chapter we had a very successful season. We wrapped up a very productive state convention. Our animal science class and our chapter hosted an animal nursery. It was very successful with around 150 adults and children coming to pet the animals. The children and adults both learned a lot from our fact sheets that we made. Yesterday we had our banquet and elected our new officers! It was an exciting and fun night with new officers to take us into the new year. Now we are planning our summer activities and are very excited for leadership retreat. Garretson FFA - The Garretson FFA is taking on several community service projects this year. Our largest project is renovating the basement of the city museum, so it can be used for new exhibits. We are also planting four trees in Splitrock Park in Garretson. This summer our chapter is planting two acres of sweet corn. After harvesting we will sell the produce at a roadside stand located near Garretson. We have a lot to look forward to this summer and are very excited. McCook Central FFA - The McCook Central chapter has been busy preparing for end of the year FFA activities. After returning from a successful State FFA Convention, our chapter began with the preparations for our upcoming chapter banquet. We are also working with the local FCA and Student Council to prepare and serve a benefit breakfast for the backpack program in McCook County. We also have the honor of sending a team of six individuals to the National Land judging competition this upcoming week. After the conclusion of the school year, we will begin planning for the Annual McCook/Miner Counties Relay for Life event and State Leadership Retreat. Menno FFA - The Menno FFA has spent the spring preparing for spring CDE s and most recently our banquet which was held on May 3, We awarded 6 Greenhand Degrees and 9 Chapter Degrees. Courtney Schaeffer was named the Star Greenhand for 2010 and Jay Edelman was named the Star Chapter Farmer. We also awarded Mr. and Miss FFA awards to Robert Schoenfish and Ellie Wintersteen. Brady Duxbury was our guest speaker and encouraged students to step outside the box and occasionally ask why not? Brittney Gassman also joined us and encouraged students to attend one of the 3 Leadership Retreats offered by the South Dakota FFA Association. We would like thank both Brady and Brittney for joining us for the evening and for their words of encouragement and inspiration. At the end of the evening 7 new individuals in the Menno FFA were elected to serve as our officers for the year, they are Ellie Wintersteen-President, Emily Schnabel-Vice President, MaryJo Mettler-Secretary, David Schelske-Treasurer, Courtney Schaeffer-Reporter, Jay Edelman-Sentinel and Robert Schoenfish-Student Advisor. Rapid City FFA - The Rapid City FFA Chapter is now gearing up for our chapter banquet. Our banquet is a time where we can reflect on the past year and all that we accomplished, all the friends and memories that were made, and the excitement that the next year is soon to come. Our friends and families join us in our celebration and we strive to end the school year with a bang! Though the banquet symbolizes an ending it is also a new beginning as we enter the summer and polish up those leadership skills at the Camp Bob Marshall leadership retreat! Many of our members are counting down the days until then. At the Fair! Kiley Kaufman, State Secretary and Spencer Chase, State Treasurer It s summer, and we all can t wait to relax for a little while. But what if I told you that you could earn money for something that you already have done? That s right, it s time to prepare for the Ag Learning Center at the South Dakota State Fair! Entries can vary from flower arrangements to shop projects to chapter exhibits. Anything that you can make with your own two hands can be entered. Exhibits will be judged and given up to 100 points with premiums paid to the top six entries in each class! There are a few rules: you can t enter the same exhibit more than one year, any projects need to be built by an FFA member either in an ag education class or as part of an SAE, and anything displayed needs to stay on display for the duration of the fair. In addition to the Ag Learning Center, at the South Dakota State Fair, the South Dakota FFA also hosts livestock shows for FFA members, like yourself, to showcase your showmanship skills, fitting skills, and, of course, your livestock. Entries are due August 14 to Dave Vanderwal. To find out more about displaying the results of your hard work at the South Dakota State Fair, visit the South Dakota FFA association web site at aged.sdstate.edu. We hope to see many of you and your projects at the South Dakota State Fair! Please thank our Gold and Silver SD FFA Foundation Sponsors! 8 FFA Chapters Receive Star National Chapter Awards The McCook FFA, Garretson FFA & Harrisburg FFA Chapters received Star National Chapter Awards at the South Dakota State FFA Convention in Brookings, April The purpose of the Star National Chapter Awards is to encourage chapters to develop and use a strong Program of Activities. Successful chapters plan and carry out activities centered around three key areas: student development, chapter development, and community development. Those most successful are recognized with the Star National Chapter Award. This award is sponsored by SD FFA Foundation. In 1 st place, the McCook Central FFA Chapter. Photo A L to R: Darin Schroeder, Kasie Lauck, and Matt Eichacker Student Development - McCook Central implemented three Student Development Activities. The first activity was titled Project IMAGE (Involved Members as Great Examples), and used experienced members and their SAE programs as examples to increase the participation of all FFA members for awards above the chapter level. The second was titled Project Lead (Leadership, Education & Development,) and improved the participation of the chapter members in the different leadership activities offered to them. The third activity was the Pass the Pig program that raised over $1200 for scholarships. Chapter Development-McCook Central implemented three Chapter Development Activities. The first, Project HELP (Hands on Learning Program) included providing hands on learning experience with a cooperative Supervised Agricultural Experience Program for our members with our 40 acre land laboratory. The second activity involved school improvement projects - particularly painting the agriculture shop. The third activity was Building Leaders Program. This project s primary purpose was to implement a plan to develop quality leaders for their chapter and designing a Program of Activities that would challenge their officers and the members of their Chapter. Community Development-McCook Central s three Community Development Activities included: adopting and providing for needy families during the holidays and orchestrating their annual Christmas Sharing Tree. Involving the youth of our schools with a PALS, SOFY. The final activity in this area involved students in raising money for cancer research and awareness. The McCook Central FFA chapter was awarded the Governor s Citation for outstanding Community Development projects. In 2 nd place, the Garretson FFA Chapter. Photo B L to R: Tricia Neels and Alysha Kientopf Student Development - Garretson applied three Student Development Activities. The first activity Re-inventing SAE, focused on computer skills and marketing methods in value-added agriculture. The chapter had 100% participation in SAE projects. The second was titled Career Development, all chapter members studied Agricultural careers using the internet, field trips and guest speakers. Thirty-three members competed in twenty-one different career development events during the year. The third activity was titled Safety is Elementary. A Healthy Lifestyles Committee was formed and presented a bicycle safety program, worked with the Teens Against Tobacco Use and prepared three news releases on accidents involving farmers that were published by the local newspaper and TV station. Chapter Development-Garretson implemented three Chapter Development Activities. The first was titled National FFA Week. The chapter hosted an FFA Week breakfast. Members participated in all organizational activities including invitations, setup, cooking, cleanup and public service announcements. The second activity was titled Building Future Leaders. Leadership training for officers was a portion of this activity along with revising the Program of Activities, adopting a 50:50 share plan for attending leadership conferences and training first year members in parliamentary procedure skills. The third activity was titled Sell What You Grow. This project focused on marketing concepts. Members toured ag related businesses and listened to guest speakers, contacted Agriculture promotion associations, trained in sales skills and sold cheese and meat products. Community Development-Garretson s three Community Development Activities included: Fishing for Growth, where the chapter organized a fishing derby to be included in the city-wide celebration; Honor Our Seniors, in which a vegetable garden was planted and the produce was donated to elderly people in the community. Also as part of this activity, programs for the local nursing home were organized and senior citizens were interviewed about what agriculture was like when they were young. FFA members also delivered Meals on Wheels. Drive It Up found members organizing a blood drive, a food drive and a shoe drive. In 3 rd place, the Harrisburg FFA Chapter. Photo C L to R: Elle Tornberg and Jessica Faris Student Development The Harrisburg Chapter implemented three student development activities designed to help improve the members leadership skills, expand their SAE programs and assist them in exploring the many different career skills available within the agricultural industry. Harrisburg s activities were: Creating agricultural safety presentations for local grade school students; Hosting the District 3 Leadership CDEs which involved planning, scoring, time-keeping and selling concessions for the event. To increase the number of students with high quality SAE projects, 39 members submitted proficiency award applications for state consideration. Chapter Development To increase recruitment and develop good relations with other CTE organizations, the Harrisburg chapter hosted a joint meeting in October with the local FCCLA chapter. 80 students attended this meeting where members worked together to make greeting cards which were sent to US troops stationed overseas. Chapter officers and award winners attended the National FFA Convention to attend sessions and leadership workshops, make new friends and gain a better understanding of the National FFA. Working with The Banquet in nearby Sioux Falls allowed members the chance to better understand the needs of low income families in our community and area. Community Development The Harrisburg chapter promoted agricultural awareness by hosting the Old MacDonald s Farm petting zoo at the Sioux Empire Fair. A chili feed was held prior to a home football game to provide a hot meal on a cool night and to help raise funds for traveling to the national FFA convention. To promote a better environment and to develop pride within the Harrisburg community, FFA & FCCLA members worked together on the first Saturday in May at Harrisburg Community days. Eleven members braved the rain to clean up 2 miles of road ditch east of town while another 15 members assisted the city council and street crew in collecting branches, old appliances and other unwanted items. 8
