3 Note from the Editor: Putting together a 40+ page newsletter is no easy task, especially when you are the editor, layout artist and proofreader. Some things get missed, so let me apologize to Fred Van Nostrand, our FBMA President, for his missing photo in the last issue. All I can say is that sometimes these computers have a mind of their own, and things just disappear. Sorry, Fred. I double-checked this time. To everyone else, please forgive me any typos or design errors in this issue; time wasn t on my side! Lots has happened in the past two months, including some major changes that we heard about at Midyear. We had Supreme Governor Terry Walls in Florida at the beginning of March and the Lodges he visited rolled out the red carpet for him. Florida Day at Moosehaven was another great event with a super turnout and beautiful weather. Our cover girl this issue, Verna Wilson, made an appearance specifically to enjoy one of Moosehaven s signature funnel cakes. And from what I hear, she did enjoy it! In this issue are lots of photos including some from this year s Solar Polar Plunge that took place at the Rosen Plaza at Mid-year. Over $4,000 was raised to benefit the Centennial Project. Check out the Photo Gallery II on the FBMA website to see all the photos. Academy of Friendship matriculants gathered on Sunday morning to receive their degree, and Moose Legion ritualists finally heard the results from their competition earlier this year at the banquet. The conference offered a variety of break-out sessions on both Friday and Saturday and a winner of the FBMA karaoke competition was named on Friday night. Sadly, however, the FBMA lost one of its most esteemed members during the conference. Bob Bullock, Past Supreme Governor and longtime Moose member, passed away. We will all miss seeing Bob in his shiny black boots at Moose functions. Our condolences to his family and friends. Finally, International Convention is just around the corner and I ll be there in St. Louis capturing all of the fun with my camera. I know many of you have received or will be receiving awards, so be sure to send photos and articles for me to include in the next Courier. 4 Message from Territory Manager/F.B.M.A. Liaison Moose Build Our Foundation We have just finished our Mid-Year and what a great time it was. Our two Official Visitors were great and we all had fun. If you missed it, I m sorry and hope you will make the convention in September. Congratulations to Everett Goodwin and Angie Clark for being selected as the Lifetime Achievement Award winners for Florida. Congratulation to South Florida Moose Legion Ritual team for its first place finish in the competition. For the first time I can remember, the team had a clean sweep. Every member placed first in their individual parts. During the time we were there we lost one of our most valued members. Past Supreme Governor Robert Bob Bullock passed away on Friday April 15th. Bob will be truly missed at our meetings. He was a true fraternalist and a great leader in our fraternity. As I am writing this prior to the end of April I am confident that we will have a gain in active members in the Lodges, Chapters and Moose Legions. All I can say is if we don t it won t be for a lack of trying. I know the many of our units have worked diligently to do so and big thanks goes out to all that have helped. As we prepare for the Moose International Convention in St. Louis, just a reminder to bring your bells and make some noise whenever you hear a Lodge, Chapter, Moose Legion, Member or the Association named for anything. Make sure you find a seat Front Left (FL) as you are facing the stage. We want to make sure the folks back here in Florida that can t make it to St. Louis hear us loud and clear. As we wind up the Build Our Foundation campaign and begin the Raise The Roof campaign we must be sure that every unit has a plan in place to ensure growth during the year. Every unit must have a local campaign and must recognize your sponsors. The awards for sponsoring a new or former member do not have to be expensive. A simple award such as a free drink or a free meal will help promote sponsorship. The sponsor should also be recognized in the newsletter, on the web page on Facebook and at meetings and events at the Lodge. Thank you for all you do for our children, seniors, your Lodge, Chapter and Moose Legion and your fraternity. See you in St. Louis. Fraternally, Jerry Monk Territory Manager/FBMA Liaison From the Desk of the President Our 56th annual Mid- Year is behind us; if you missed it "you missed a lot", but make it a point to attend your District meetings and the District Presidents will catch you up. I was very pleased with so many first time attendees, quite a few new incoming Governors too. The Lodge year is brand new, if you did not make your 2015/2016 year "NOW" is the time to put into motion plans and internal programs to get on top of the 2016/2017 Lodge year. Get your com- mittees up and running. Lodges, (that do) have a better rate of success. St. Louis... Florida sits front left at the sessions. Bring your bells; lets make some noise every time Florida is mentioned. As always "do you very best in every situation." Fred Van Nostrand FBMA President Vol No. 3 4 May/Jun 2016

5 From the Desk of the Regional Manager The Mid-Year Conference is behind us and what a GREAT Conference it was. We certainly learned a lot from the many workshops. It was also good to see old friends and make new ones. There were a good number of first time attendees who really enjoyed their first conference. The end of the fiscal year is less than 2 weeks away and will be a thing of the past by the time you receive your newsletter. How did your Lodge fare? Did you increase your membership? Did you increase donations to Moose Charities? As we start the new fiscal year we should be reminded of the Moose mission: Mooseheart, Moosehaven, Community Service and Membership. Without members we are without means of supporting our mission. In years past we grew because of a common need. That need has not diminished; in fact, it has grown with each passing year. We often fail to offer assistance to those in our own Message from the Deputy Grand Regent Congratulations again to our new Academy of Friendship Friends. It is an honor well deserved. I pray that you continue to work within your Chapter and provide service to the Moose fraternity and your community. To those who attended the Mid-Year conference, I hope that you learned something new to take back to your chapter or were refreshed with enthusiasm. Here is a top 6 list of items to remember from the conference. Top 6 Things Co-workers should remember from the Mid-Year Conference 6. How to fill out Forms 114 and 166 properly. 5. How to fill out the Chapter Audit Worksheet. 4. One of the requirements for earning the Award of Achievement is that the chapter maintain its financial standing. Net assets of April 30 must be greater The Courier communities because we fail to let them know of the services we provide. We ask every year for each lodge to hold an Open House and I am asking you to do so again this year. But to plan a successful Open House takes months of planning, advertising and participation from our members. You have to build up excitement for the volunteers to take part in. You need to consult with the Mayor s office, the Town Council, Police and Fire Departments. Have representatives from each of the local charities you support. Have pamphlets on hand explaining Mooseheart and Moosehaven. Ask your Territory Manager to take part. Toot your own Horn. If you follow the steps outlined above you will increase awareness of the Moose, you will make a lasting impression on your community and you may even grow your membership. I wish each of you good fortune in this new fiscal year. Let s make it our BEST! Sincerely and Fraternally, Sam Harris, Regional Manager than or equal to the net assets of the previous May 1. There is no $1 more requirement. 3. There will be a statewide Pilgrim Presentation on Friday night, September 16th. Collegians who wish to participate should bring their regalia. 2. The FBMA has pledged $850,000 for the Moosehaven Centennial Project and $150,000 for a new Moosehaven van. The FBMA has appealed to the chapters to help meet this pledge. Chapters should earmark FBMA Moosehaven Centennial Project on their checks to Moose Charities when sending in donations in honor of this appeal. 1. The Florida Chapters really shine when it comes to Community Service. With your help, we were able to donate 140 filled blessing bags, 70 unfilled bags, and about 150 pounds of boxed toiletry items for the Coalition for the Homeless. A great big thank you to all that brought in the items and bags. You have made a difference in someone s life! Looking forward to seeing you in St. Louis. Till then Sparkle on Florida. 12 MOOSEHEART Mooseheart NJROTC Hosts Gala Military Ball By DARRYL MELLEMA, Associate Editor, Moose Magazine It s a leadership exercise for them. I gave them a catalog after last year s ball and said you saw what they did this year. What would you like to see next year, I told them it wasn t my Military Ball, it was theirs, U.S. Navy Warrant Officer (Ret.) Rick Smith said. Smith is Mooseheart s lead NJROTC officer. For one night every March, Mooseheart s Naval Junior Reserve Officer s Training Corps (NJROTC) company gathers in a theme of honor and celebration for its Military Ball. This year, that night was March 18. The company, which includes all high school students in a mandatory program, dresses in its finery boys in dress uniforms and girls in prom-like gowns. All five service branches are honored with a toast and those who serve in the military are remembered. Then the dancing starts and the company settles into an evening of conversation and relaxation. In many ways, though they are not serving actively, Mooseheart s Military Ball mirrors those held by military personnel all over the world, who use the occasion as a moment to take a break from the serious and sometimes deadly business their jobs entail. Planning for this year s Mooseheart Military Ball began not long after the 2015 celebration. This has been a year of positive transformation for Mooseheart s NJROTC. Central in final phase of the school s three-year, $11.5 million renovation is a new classroom and air rifle range for the program. Work is nearly complete and students will begin using that space in April. Among scheduled events to take place in the gymnasium that is also part of the final portion of the renovation is the May 6 Change of Command ceremony. That s going to be an exciting thing for all of us, Smith said. We re really excited about the air rifle range, because we have excelled in competitions recently. This year marked the second that Southern California Moose Legion 6 funded the Military Ball, and Smith said those monies were very welcome. We re really, really grateful for that. We appreciate them for taking care of us, Smith said. Courtesy of Mooseheart website Vol No May/Jun 2016

22 FBMA Mid-Year Conference Solar Polar Plunge Makes a Big Splash for Moose Charities This year s Polar Plunge became a Solar Plunge, when members gathered by the Rosen Plaza Pool at 4:00 PM on Thursday afternoon of this year s Mid-Year Conference. The weather was perfect and anticipation high. Participants in costume vied for prizes, while other sported their best poolside ensembles. I am pleased to announce that $4, was raised this year for Moose Charities in support of the Centennial Project. At the time of the actual plunge Pensacola took the award for biggest donation; however, due to the timing of the plunge, additional checks came in later surpassing the Pensacola amount. 25 FBMA Mid-Year Conference Moosehaven Centennial Sweepstakes Successful T hree lucky winners were drawn during the Saturday banquet during the FBMA Mid-Year Conference in Orlando to cap off the first of six raffles to benefit the FBMA commitment to the Moosehaven Centennial Project. A lodge had the winning ticket for $ , a consortium of four different members won $3, and one lucky lady, Caroline Sloat, took home the grand prize of $5, She happened to be on hand for conferral to the WOTM Academy of Friendship Degree the following morning. The Courier Thanks to all the District Presidents who worked hard to accomplish their goals, and to all the lodges, moose legions and individuals that participated. Three hundred (300) tickets were distributed for the next sweepstakes drawing, which will be held at the September FBMA annual convention in Orlando. District Presidents have two tickets for each lodge, and if you want to donate $ for a ticket and opportunity to win the money, ask at your lodge or see the DP. We had some confusion for the first time out, due to our failure to provide detailed instructions (and due to some that didn t listen to the poor instructions). We had several of the tickets misplaced, lost, or for some other reason not returned with a $ donation. But, we weathered the storm, and with the understanding and cooperation of many individuals, we were able to finish with 288 sold of the 300 issued, and netted almost $20, not a bad day s work. On behalf of the committee to organize the fundraising for the FBMA s $1,000, ($850K for the new building and $150K for the new bus) commitment to the Moosehaven Centennial project, we THANK YOU! John Reiter Bill and Linda Mulligan Rodney Hammond District 19 Takes First Place in Karaoke Contest on Friday Night The karaoke contest was a great success and we had some great singers. Eighteen contestants entered and the field was narrowed down to the final three. Our third place winner was William Swick from Pompano Beach 2157 in District 4; our second place winner and alternate was Tony Machicote from New Port Richey 1747 in District 18; and our first place winner and champion is James "Dee" Cisneros from InterBay 912 in District 19. James, if picked for the final 12 in St. Louis International Karaoke Competition in July, will proudly represent Florida. We all wish him the best of luck. I would also like to acknowledge my partners in the contest. Dave Thomas (Karaoke DJ and Entertainer), Jack Welch (Karaoke DJ and Radio DJ), and Barbara Pearson (our Second Place Finalist last year), our judges and especially Jim Kelly (Second Year Karaoke DJ). They had the hardest job of the evening, and their assistance is greatly appreciated. I would also like to thank all the contestants and the audience that attended. I must include Dan O Neal and the registration staff, along with Charles Geary, Chuck Plourde, Wally Machemer, and Al Caime (AKA CHUCKY2) at the doors. I hope and think that the performances that the members attending were a part of highlighted their evening. Hope to see everyone next year. 26 HIGHER DEGREE A Quick Look Back at Some Loyal Order of Moose Regalia At a recent event at the Tallahassee Lodge, I ran into Joe Giles. He is a Past President of the Florida Moose Association. That was back before Bermuda was added. He is a 59 year member and received his Fellowship Degree in 1973 and Pilgrim Degree in I asked him to take a walk with me out to the lobby where we took a look at the display featuring his old regalia. As Historical Chairman, it s fun for me to meet the man that wore the robes and Joe was kind enough to pose for me next to the display. Next time you are at Moosehaven for a major event, check to see if the Archives are open. I ve got more items like Joe s regalia on display and would be happy to visit with you and talk a little Moose history with you. 29 COMMUNITY SERVICE North Florida Council of Higher Degrees Donates Tommy Moose to Red Cross For the each of the last three years, the North Florida Council of Higher Degrees has presented three cases of Tommy Moose to a local first responder type agency. This year, Mr. Chad Angel, Program Manager for the Disaster Programs and Disaster Relief Services for North East Florida received the Tommy Moose for the Red Cross. His territory encompasses seventeen counties. President of the Council, John Koelling, made the presentation. Mr. Angel stated that in catastrophic circumstances such as a house fire, the children tend to be the most traumatized. They have lost what they believe is the most important thing their toys. Tommy Moose is a very calming and instrumental tool to help remove the child s attention from the situation he or she is caught up in. The first responders that we have been able speak to have expressed great thankfulness for the Tommy Moose and the soothing effect it has on the receiving child. 37 The Courier MOOSE INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION Community Service Project to Benefit St. Louis Area Public Schools We will be continuing our newfound tradition of hosting drives for food, clothing and education supplies. This year, we will be working with the St. Louis Public Schools, which strives to provide a quality education for all students and enable them to realize their full intellectual potential. One exciting aspect of the school supply drive this year is that the entire donation will be divided into five parts: One part will be presented for donation at the school where we will be doing the community service, and the other four parts will be presented to four different communities in the surrounding area by those communities local lodges. We are excited that our efforts will not only serve the schools in the immediate downtown St. Louis district, but that they will also ripple out into several surrounding communities and generate a Moose presence there. Visit the new Mooseheart website at See what your donations can do. May/Jun Vol No. 3
