3 Note from the Editor: The new year is upon us and I want to thank everyone that contributed to The Courier last year and for the kind words I received from so many of you. It was a great year and our members raised a lot of money for Moose Charities and provided service to our communities and supported many local and national charities. As you will see in this issue, we have another challenge in front of us the Moosehaven Centennial project. More about that on page 13. We should all be working on our retention, too, and spreading the word about what the Moose do and what we represent. With a clear understanding of this, the people we sign up are sure to be members that stay! I ve included in this issue some photos from the Moosehaven Chili Cook-off with our past Association Presidents bringing home another 1st place award for People s Choice in the blind judging. Moosehaven and Mooseheart were both represented, with Mooseheart Executive Director Gary Urwiler doing his part at the Mooseheart booth. Because of the meetings scheduled on the Moosehaven campus that week, dignitaries such as Director General Scott Hart and Grand Chancellor Barb McPherson were around to sample the chili and vote. Mother nature kept the skies blue, the temperatures fair, and only late in the day was there a chilly breeze off of the St. John s River. But, it was a wonderful day and another great turnout. The Supreme Governor, Terry Walls, will be visiting some Lodges in March and everyone should start thinking about the Midyear conference in April. Make sure you have booked your rooms at the Rosen Plaza. April will be here before we know it, and rooms go fast there. July is the International convention in St. Louis (see page 34), and before you know it the 2016 will be gone. Until then, the calendar is pretty full for As Moose we are never short of things to do! 4 Message from Territory Manager/F.B.M.A. Liaison Moose Build Our Foundation. As we move into the last 4 months of the Moose Year, are we doing all we can to Build Our Foundation? Have you sponsored someone this year? Do your Lodges, Chapters and Moose Legions all have an ACTIVE Membership Committee? These are all good questions that I hope can be answered with yes. We must do everything we can to increase our membership in the coming years. If we keep declining as we have over the last several years, I am in fear that we may not be able to sustain Mooseheart and Moosehaven and that would be devastating to those in need of the services of these two great institutions. I know in my heart that not one of us wants that to happen and we are the only ones that can ensure it does not by continuing to sponsor qualified members into our great fraternity and to encourage others to do the same. Let s all double our efforts for the next 4 months to make sure not only our individual units have a PLUS 1 but that our entire fraternity does. The FBMA LOOM Membership Chairman has created a new short term campaign for January through March so look for the information in this issue. It is a chance to win some cold hard cash. Lodges are able to get in on the act too if they are Plus 1 on the Friday of the Mid Year. I am looking forward to the upcoming Mid Year. We will be doing a Heart Of The Community Project at the Mid Year and details are being worked out by the LOOM and WOTM Heart Of The Community Chairman at this time and will be shared as soon as the details are available. Our Official Visitors will be Grand Regent Jeanenne Lautzenheiser and Supreme Jr. Governor Franz Fritz Griswold. Both will have great Moose Wisdom to share with us. In closing, I truly hope that all had a safe and enjoyable holiday season. Thank you for all you do to make our world a better place to live. See you down the road. Jerry Monk Territory Manager/FBMA Liaison Vol No. 1 4 Jan/Feb 2016

5 From the Desk of the President As we turn the corner into a New Year, we feel renewed and energized (yes we do). We will turn that energy into results. We will be saying welcome back to many of our northern members and friends, and they in turn will be bring more friends (potential members). Take advantage of this opportunity, put your best foot forward with a good looking Lodge (clean and inviting), wait staff that are friendly and helpful doesn't cost a nickel to say "Hi how have you been?" And when the bartender or person on the door checks a card, note the name not just the expiration date. Say, "Hey Mike good to see you," or "What can I get for you Mike?" These kind of details do help help to sign a new member and it certainly helps to keep them coming back. My point being, there is so much we can do in house to keep our promise to "Increase The Strength of Our Or- der". My thinking is and has always been (that in our Lodge) we have to take the responsibility to make our Lodge successful and if we succeed, then the fraternity is successful. Please remember... do your very best in every situation... A Happy and Healthy New Year, Fred Van Nostrand, F.B.M.A. President Message from the Deputy Grand Regent Florida Co-workers, Congratulations to all the new collegians and the collegians who received their red tassels and red stoles in November. Congratulations also to those receiving their call cards for the College of Regents degree and the Star Recorder degree. I look forward to seeing you all in St. Louis. Be on the lookout soon for the registration packet for our Mid-Year Conference in Orlando on April 14-17, Also, check the FBMA website for online registration. That s right, if the mechanics work out, co-workers will be able to register online, as well as through their Chapters. Hopefully, this will increase attendance at our conference by providing another avenue for members to register. Our Official Visitor for our Mid-Year Conference will be none other than our Grand Regent, Jeanenne Lautzenheiser. You will not want to miss her informative remarks and suggestions for making your Chapter bigger and better. In addition, we are adding a special Heart of the Community event to our Mid-Year Conference. So plan on attending the upcoming Mid-Year conference. New and interesting things are in the air. But you can only take part if you attend! See you soon. Sparkle on Florida. Dawn Mackland Florida Deputy Grand Regent Jan/Feb Vol No. 1

6 From the Desk of the Regional Manager Thanksgiving is over and we are all a few pounds heavier, so it is the perfect time to volunteer at your Lodge to work it off. It seems like every Lodge I visit needs volunteers. They don t always come up and ask you to help, but I can assure you they need YOUR help. It is said only 10% of our members come out to the Lodge on a regular basis and an even smaller number actually volunteer to help. Those that do volunteer burn out because the burden is not shared by many but rests on the shoulders of these dedicated members. So go to your Lodge and ask the Administrator or other Officer how you can help today. Membership production is up, and for that we thank you. In fact, as of today, the FBMA is only down 186 members for the year. That is amazing! The way we are going now looks like a banner year for the State. Keep up the good work. As we spend time with our families, please remember the children at Mooseheart and the seniors at Moosehaven. I want to wish each and every member a very merry Christmas and all the best the New Year has to offer. May God bless you and yours! Jesus Is The Reason In Bethlehem, God gave to us the source of Christmas joy; a star shown on a miracle: the virgin birth of a boy. He was born both God and man, a Savior for us all, the way to get to our heavenly home, if we just heed His call. So as we shop and spend and wrap and enjoy the Christmas season, let's keep in mind the sacred truth: Jesus is the reason. By Joanna Fuchs Sam Harris Regional Manager Vol No. 1 6 Jan/Feb 2016

12 MOOSEHEART NJROTC Sparkles At Annual Military Inspection Mooseheart, IL, November 2 As U.S. Navy Commander (Ret.) Joe Hankins worked his way through Mooseheart's Naval Junior Reserve Officer's Training Corps (NJROTC) company during Friday's (Oct. 30) Annual Military Inspection, he found a seemingly never-ending list of things to mention. He pointed toward shoes that needed fresh polishing, noted placement of insignia and medals that needed to be improved. He even noted a mark on a shirt from what appeared to be an iron that had been left in one spot a bit too long. But when he finished his review for the first time as NJROTC Area Three Manager, Hankins said he was pleased with what he saw. "I'm always very impressed when a company of cadets stands before me in their uniforms, and wears that uniform with pride," Hankins said. "I got a sense that they're proud of who they are and that they are proud of what they represent." NJROTC is mandatory for all Mooseheart high school students, and Hankins said is aware that some students would prefer to not participate, though that did stop them from fulfilling the requirements of the inspection or the drill ceremony which followed. "Every one of them was very respectful," Hankins said. "They were very much ready for the inspection. One thing I saw is that even those individuals who do not want to be involved in the program, the fixes were small. I want them to remember that when they put on the uniform, they represent something more than themselves." There has been a military component to education at Mooseheart almost since its 1913 inception. The Mooseheart Cadet Corps was founded in 1916, and the military portion of education went through many changes until 1974, when the school became NJROTC-affiliated. "The commitment from the Moose and Mooseheart to support the program is appreciated," Hankins said. "The core values for the Navy are Honor, Courage, and Commitment. The Navy's committed to Mooseheart and Mooseheart is committed to the program." In brief remarks to the company and audience, Hankins reinforced that the purpose of the NJROTC is not to recruit students to join the Navy or any branch of the military. Though the students may not see it currently, he said there are likely to be moments in future years where their participation in the program will prove helpful. "I go back to those core values, and they can tap into those values in their day-to-day lives," Hankins said. "During challenging times, those core values will help them. I've lived those core values throughout my Navy career, and those three words can be very powerful." "Combined with the springtime Military Ball and the May Change of Command, the Annual Military Inspection is one of the key points in the Mooseheart NJROTC calendar. "I think there is a core group of cadets who take the program seriously," Mooseheart lead instructor U.S. Navy Warrant Officer (Ret.) Rick Smith said. "You could see that in the drill, where we had those most committed students performing. I don't know if I'll ever be satisfied with how we perform. But they did a good job." Working alongside Smith is U.S. Marine Gunnery Sgt. (Ret.) Ruben Hinton, who worked with Mooseheart's company before and during the inspection to perform its best. "It's not just how they look," Smith said. "We're here to build their character in everything they do. If some of them aren't up to their potential, it makes me want to work harder so they get better." Darryl Mellema Photo by Darryl Mellema Downloaded from Vol No Jan/Feb 2016

I am sure those of you that attended the Nashville International Convention remember Executive Director John Capes introducing it to the attendees. The Courier 1 MOOSEHAVEN CENTENNIAL PROJECT Construct a new congregate living facility for Moosehaven s Traditional residents. PROJECT GOALS: 1. Improve the quality of life for Traditional residents 2. Reduce operating expenses PROJECT SCOPE: 1. Located immediately east and across the street from the Donald R. Eisel Ohio Assisted Living Hall [see picture #1]. 2. Three stories with two wings [pictures 2 & 3] residential apartments [pictures 4 & 5] 4. In-house kitchen and dining [picture 6] 5. Up-to-date technologies 6. In-house amenities 7. Tricycle parking 8. Modern, durable construction SUMMARY DESCRIPTION: Improve the quality of life for Traditional residents. The first of our two primary goals for this project was to improve the quality of life for congregate residents by providing a modern flexible facility. This new building provides larger apartments, each having a deck or patio (depending on floor), private bathrooms and expanded closet space. Reduce operating expenses: Our second goal was to reduce operating expenses. While this goal was secondary to improving the quality of life for our residents, it is evident that these were not mutually exclusive but rather mutually supporting. So, my friends you did an outstanding job for the Mooseheart School Renovation and I know you can do the same for Moosehaven. Let s keep the momentum going and get this outstanding project out to all. Always remember... IF IT IS TO BE, IT IS UP TO ME! With warmest regards and in friendship, Jan Fregulia Executive Director, Moose Charities Jan/Feb Vol No. 1

17 FLORIDA SHERIFFS YOUTH RANCHES Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranch Decorated Cottages for the Holidays As the holidays approach, Youth Ranches staff members are busy coordinating activities with our donors and supporters from around the state. Christmas is a much anticipated time on our campuses. The Ranchers enjoy decorating their cottages with Christmas trees and signs of the season. In years past, most boys and girls traveled home for the holidays, although some did not. This year, with the addition of our sibling cottages, half of our Ranchers will wake up in their cottage home on Christmas morning. Fortunately, our donors and supporters really know how to make the Ranchers smile. Plans are being finalized for some exciting days and nights ahead at the Boys Ranch in Live Oak, the Youth Villa in Bartow, the Youth Ranch Bradenton-Sarasota and the Youth Ranch Safety Harbor. The Ranchers on the Boys Ranch will be decorating the campus with their cottage boards wishing visitors a Merry Christmas! Some of the expected visitors will be the Florida Moose Riders and the Tallahassee Independent Order of Odd Fellows. The Moose Riders request a wish list each year and visit the cottages to deliver their goodies while the Tallahassee Oddfellows deliver a brand new pair of blue jeans for each of the boys. The Youth Villa in Bartow will enjoy a visit from Santa and several members of the Loyal Order of Moose from Palm Beach. Polk County Youth for Christ will pay a visit to decorate cookies. The girls will also be taking a field trip to a local farm to enjoy a holiday movie, bonfire, dinner and visit from Santa Claus sponsored by Armor Correctional Health Services. The Hillsborough County Lady Deputies will be visiting with the girls to make breakfast, bake cookies and decorate ornaments. One of the most anticipated moments will be Santa paying a visit via helicopter thanks to Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd. Members of the Florida Blue Knights International Motorcycle Club, made up of current and retired law enforcement officers, will be stopping by the Bradenton-Sarasota campus to deliver presents and have lunch with the Ranchers. The boys and girls will be decorating their cottages and the community center. The Courier The Ranchers on the Safety Harbor campus will be receiving a visit from Ye Mystic Krewe of Santa Margarita s Pirate Santa and his elves aboard their Gasparilla pirate ship parade float. The Ranchers will also enjoy a Christmas PJ Party and the Sons of the American Legion will be on campus to bake cookies on Christmas Eve, cook breakfast on Christmas morning and welcome Santa with a bag full of presents. Despite the many reasons these boys and girls find themselves entrusted to our programs, this holiday season looks to be an exciting one on the campuses of the Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches. If you would like more information on how to help support the boys and girls in our care, please contact Wayne Witczak, Donor Development Director at or visit us at Submitted by Jim Karantinos jkarantinos@youthranches.org Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches Jan/Feb Vol No. 1

31 LODGE AND CHAPTER NEWS Zephyrhills Lodge 2276 Raises $17,208 for East Pasco Toys for Tots The Courier The Toys for Tots for East Pasco County campaign started 11 years ago by Mrs. Norma Vessels and the WOTM Chapter 1682 Ritual Team. For many years the goal was to raise $10, with the only event being the Annual Christmas Ball, the second Saturday in December. The goal was high but never achieved. Then in 2010 the Lodge added two more events, a Poker Run and a Twas the Night before the Christmas Ball, which elated Norma as it brought new life to this great endeavor. That was the first year we broke the $10, mark including toys. Last year Mrs. Norma became ill, but then the Lodge stepped up to the plate and continued with the campaign raising just over $11, in cash plus toys, putting us over $15, As Norma was with her family in Kentucky during last year s drive, she stayed on top of us to get the job done. Sadly Mrs. Norma passed away on the day of last year s Christmas Ball; we figure it was her way of coming to the Ball. With all that being said the 2015 Toys for Tots drive for Zephyrhills took on an even larger responsibility to make Mrs. Norma Vessels proud of what she created. So with a few more dedicated members we added two more events, bringing the total to 5 events with 4 being open to the public. First was one of the new events, The Band Marathon raising $6, The 2nd new event was the Car Show on the same day as the Poker Run raising over $ between the two events. Then of course was the Twas the Night before the Christmas Ball on Friday night and the Christmas Ball on Saturday night. At the end of the Ball we announced that we raised $17, in cash plus over $ in toys, including 20 bicycles. Mrs. Norma is dancing away with the Lord, being so proud of her Lodge and Chapter working together to make a difference in the lives of over 1000 families in East Pasco County. As Administrator, I want to thank the long line of volunteers to bring this all together. The names are too many to list, as I would guess over 50 members where involved plus the many members and community members who donated to our drive. And we cannot forget Land O Lakes Lodge 1903, Brooksville Lodge 1676 and Dade City Lodge 397 for their donations and support with the Poker Run. A person never stands taller than when holding a child up to bring joy into their lives. Merry Christmas to the Children around the world. 33 MOOSE RIDERS Riverview Moose Riders Spread Joy to Children, Seniors, Vets and Homeless December 6, 2015, should have been like any other day. It was a typically beautiful, warm, sunny, December Florida day, but this day was quite different than the others. This was the first Sunday in December. This is the day that the Riverview Moose Riders were looking forward to early in this 2015 Holiday season. This was the day we make the children of East Hillsborough County smile. This was the day we get to shake the hand of a homeless Veteran of Liberty Manor and thank them for their sacrifice and service. This is the day we feel privileged to be able to participate in the annual Cookson Hills Toy Run. With the loss of one of the founders of the Cookson Hills Toy Run, Bill Brown, this year s event was bittersweet. Bill and his wife Sherri started this event in For 22 years and counting, the Cookson Hills Toy Run has been providing Christmas memories for the Forgotten children of East Hillsborough County, Florida. This event started out as simply a good deed and provided gifts and Christmas memories for 18 children. Since that first Sunday of December 1993, the event has grown to include needy children from newborn to 18 years old, low income seniors, special needs adults and homeless Veterans of Liberty Manor. Below: 1st Row, Bear and Monkey. 2nd row: Bear, Monkey, Dave Carlile, Charlie Brown, Kay Carlile and Carl LeMay. 3rd row: Cody Carlile, Bear, Bear and Monkey. The Courier Those who attend this annual event quickly discover the delight of seeing where your presents go instead of dropping them in a box. YOU personally present the gifts directly to the Forgotten that are invited, becoming a part of their lives, experiencing the joy and happiness when your Christmas gifts are opened. We were introduced to this event in 2010 by our Past Moose Rider President, Carl Lemay. Carl told us about this event and encouraged us to join him and his family on this toy run. After our first Cookson Hills Toy Run with only a handful of gifts, we were hooked. Starting after Halloween every year, the Riverview Moose Riders begin preparation for this annual event. The Christmas tree in our Lobby is decorated with ornaments listing the age, gender and gift ideas for a child, senior or the Veterans of Cookson Hills. Members are asked to take as many ornaments as they wish and purchase gifts for those individuals. The Friday after Thanksgiving, all of the toys are laid out in our hall and the wrapping begins. With well over 200 gifts every year, it s a daunting task made easy with the help of our great riders and Lodge members. With the large pink Teddy Bears, last minute gifts and giant monkeys loaded on the bikes, the Riverview Moose Riders meet up with our fellow riders and members at the Lodge. From there, two-wheelers, three-wheelers, trucks, trailers and mini vans head out to Veterans Park in Tampa, FL. At 2pm, the gift giving begins. Hundreds of bikers from all over Tampa Bay hand out their gifts to the children, seniors, special needs adults and Veterans. Shortly afterwards, we all get to watch the huge smiles, the joyful gasps and the tears of joy and happiness as these precious individuals open their gifts. Six weeks of preparation. Many hours of fund raising, shopping, wrapping and counting gifts. One hour to hand out gifts. 30 minutes of surprises and smiles as the children and others open their gifts. Every invested minute is well worth it. There is no better way to start your Christmas Holiday season than the experience of the Cookson Hills Toy Run.
