1 Parent Advisory Council Minutes for March 20, ) Guest Presentation Mr. Corey Kapilik, Career Connect Program at Miles Macdonell Collegiate Corey presented an overview of the program that began in Semester 1 of this school year. The program follows the Department of Education Provincial Guidelines related to their Career Development Curriculum. Students enrolled in this afternoon semester course receive 2 high school credits (Career Development Life/Work Building 30S and Career Development Life/Work 405). The program aims to provide students with exposure to a work placement for a 3 month period of time, as well as developing skills related to Career Education (i.e. resume building, job interviews, leadership and personal management, student confidence and Career Portfolio development.) Ms. Vivien Laurie also reviewed two other Career Development/Vocational Education Programs at Miles Macdonell Collegiate (Cosmetology and Health and Human Services) as well as the Apprenticeships Manitoba Guidelines where students can earn up to 8 credits working in a particular trade while attending high school. The program also overs a salary for those students involved. Information can be found in Student Services at MMC or by contacting Mr. Brad Stelmach, one of our guidance counsellors. 2) Staff Report presented by Ms. Brenda McConaghy Information was provided on the following events: March 1 Spring School Dance Teacher Candidates from the Universities of Manitoba, Brandon and Winnipeg The MMC Cafeteria Art Installation Student Registrations and Post-Secondary Information Tables Spring Break Trips (Scotland Music Tour and the Costa Rica Biology Tour) 3) Administration Report presented by Ms. Vivien Laurie Information was provided on the following: Vimy Ridge History Tour in April Registration Day on March 15 Parent/Student [reacher Conferences April 4th evening) and April 5th (afternoon) Blood Donor Clinic April 12 Mid-Term Reports April 25 Pulse Magazine Launch April 19 Professional Development Day School Plan April 20 th lb/june Exam dates Grade 12 Honours and Scholarship Evening June 27 Grad Convocation June 28 Grad Dinner & Dance June 29 MMC to be totally wireless by June 2012 New Science Classroom and Kitchen will be constructed over the summer. 1
