SPECIAL ISSUE Back-to-School Serving portions of Livonia & Westland Vol. 36, No. 1 August 2007 Back-to-school event planned with Radio Disney/Laurel Park Place Mall Livonia Public Schools will welcome back students and staff at a Back-to-School celebration at Laurel Park Place Mall on Tuesday, August 28, from 11:00 a.m. 2:00 p.m. The theme for the community wide event will be Back to School with High School Musical 2 (HSM2). Radio Disney has planned an electrifying number of activities for children of all ages. See page six for a complete list of activities. Members of the Creative and Performing Arts (CAPA) program will also present several selections from High School Musical. Singer/actor Drew Seeley will make a special guest appearance to greet the crowd and sign autographs. Drew was the singing voice for the main character Troy Bolton in High School Musical. He recently starred in the North American tour of High School Musical: The Concert. In recent years, his vocals have appeared on many Disney related projects including the Cheetah Girls and the new Disney original movie Jump In. In addition to his singing career, Drew has appeared on Dawson s Creek, Guiding Light, and The Suite Life of Zack and Cody. In addition, a grand prize drawing will be held for five VIP tickets to see Corbin Bleu (Star of Disney s High School Musical and Jump In); Aly & AJ (who just released their new Insomniatic CD and starred in the MTV film Super Sweet 16); and Drake Bell (from Nickelodeon s Drake and Josh) perform live at the DTE Energy Music Theater. The prize will also include a meet and greet with Aly & AJ and Corbin Bleu in a catered dressing room backstage! 2 Bus passes required for students The following guidelines have been established for the school year: ELEMENTARY SCHOOL Notification postcards will be mailed to all bus riders, except kindergarteners, the week of Aug. 20. Kindergarten cards will be given to the building principal because of a.m./p.m. designation and overloads to other schools. MIDDLE SCHOOL Students will use notification postcards, mailed the week of Aug. 20, for the start of school. All students will have ID picture/bus passes made during schedule pickup and will start using the passes once they are issued by the building. HIGH SCHOOL First-time enrollees at any secondary school will be issued a student ID /bus pass at no cost. CHURCHILL All students will get a new ID picture taken during the schedule pick up. Current bus passes will be validated when students pick up schedules and will be required on the first day of school. Replacement ID passes may be obtained during schedule pick-up for $5. STEVENSON Incoming 9th graders and new students will receive a temporary ID card during schedule pickup. Returning students will begin the school year using their existing ID/bus pass. Returning students will need their student ID (or purchase a new one for $5) to pick-up their schedule. All students will receive a new student ID /bus pass for the school year following underclass picture day at no cost. Replacement cost for any lost student ID/bus pass during the school year will be $5. Career Technical Center offers vocational classes The Livonia Public Schools School District offers vocational education programs at the Livonia Career Technical Center and at Churchill, Franklin and Stevenson high schools. These programs are designed to prepare youth for a broad range of employment and training services. Below is a list of programs being offered this year and the criteria for admission. On this date, AM kindergarten will meet 8:55-10:15 a.m. and PM kindergarten will meet 10:50 a.m.-12:10 p.m. Beginning Thurs., Sept. 6, the regular AM/PM kindergarten schedule begins as well as the regular full day schedule for grades 1-4. 4 Family Rights & Privacy Act Reviewed Educational records of students in the Livonia Public Schools School District are safeguarded by policies of the federal legislation entitled Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of Parents, guardians, and/or eligible students, 18 years of age or older, may have access to that student s educational records. Parents who are not married may have access to their child s records unless specifically prohibited by a court order on file in the child s school. Parents, guardians, and/or eligible students wishing to read a child s educational record should contact the principal s office. Access to a Personal Cumulative File maintained by the Department of Student Services can be arranged by telephoning (734) While the law does allow for the disclosure of personally identifiable information from education records in certain circumstances, parents, students over the age of 18, and former students over the age of 18 also have the right to consent to the disclosure of such information. Disclosure of information Information from the files may be disclosed without consent in accordance with applicable law. Examples of when information may be disclosed include: 1. Parents, guardians, and/or eligible students may request that information be released to specific parties or organizations. 2. Under circumstances specified in the school district s regulations to certain state and federal officials, courts, etc. 3. To protect the health and safety of the students. 4. Upon request, the Livonia Public Schools discloses education records without consent to officials of 4 another school district in which a student seeks or intends to enroll. Access to records Pursuant to federal law and regulation, the District may allow school officials to have access to education records without consent of a parent, guardian, or eligible student. A school official is any district Board member or employee or other individual acting on behalf of the district such as: an attorney, a contractor, a volunteer, a consultant, a therapist, a committee member, a vendor, or their employees; whom the district s administration determines to have a legitimate educational interest in the records. A legitimate educational interest is any interest which furthers the best interests of the student or students involved, or assists the District in providing educational services. As an ongoing procedure to protect the rights of students by maintaining educationally relevant information in the files, administrators initiate periodic review of file information. This review will take place prior to a transfer to a new school within or outside Livonia Public Schools and at high school graduation, and may include the destruction of data which is no longer educationally relevant. Directory information In addition, federal regulations allow a school district to publish certain information without securing specific authorizations each time, if parents, guardians, and/or eligible students are informed in advance that this information, known as directory information, will be released. If they do not want such information made public, the principal should be informed and the information will be withheld. In Livonia Public Schools, directory information includes the following: 1. Student name 2. Address 3. Date of birth 4. Major field of study 5. Participation in recognized activities and sports 6. Weight and height of athletic team members 7. Student image or likeness in picture, videotape, film, digital format, or other media, including the district or school Web sites 8. Year of graduation 9. Awards received 10. Sex of pupil Additionally, the district is required to provide military recruiters, upon request, with names, addresses, and telephone listings of secondary students unless parents advise the district that they do not want their student s information disclosed without their prior written consent. Appeal process Parents, guardians, and/or eligible students who believe that an educational record is inaccurate, misleading, or violates the student s rights, may request in writing that the record be amended or destroyed. This request must be submitted to Dorothy Chomicz. If the request is refused, the parents, guardians, and/or eligible students have a right to a hearing. Parents or eligible students also have the right to file a complaint with the U.S. Department of Education concerning an alleged failure of the school district to comply with the federal FERPA/1974. The federal government maintains an office that will assist. The curriculum of MSC is specifically designed for academically talented students. Eighth grade students who have completed Algebra 1 by June 2007 are eligible to apply for the MSC (Math/Science/Computer) Program. MSC students must become full-time Churchill High School students. Transportation is provided. LPS students are notified of their opportunity to apply in late November. Interested private/parochial/home-schooled students must request information by November 3, Testing for the program will occur on January 5, Private school students having additional testing on January 16, 2008.

5 Prepay lunch option available By: Martha Terry, Food Service Supervisor The elementary school lunch price is $2.50. The price for middle and high school lunches starts at $2.75 or $3.00. Milk will be 40 cents. Hot lunches will be available in the high schools starting Wed., Sept. 5 and in all other schools on Thurs., Sept. 6. Garfield Elementary, Kennedy Elementary and all 5-6, 7-8 and high schools will have the Meal Magic cash register system which tracks prepaid money, food allergies, free and reduced priced meal status individually per student. All other building students are able to prepay for 10 lunches at a time. Lunches purchased on the prepaid basis or Meal Magic system can be redeemed throughout the year. Students are not allowed to charge meals so this is a great way to secure a back-up if your student forgets his or her lunch. Checks can be made out to Livonia Public Schools. This feature is part of the Meal Magic program that is available at all LPS high schools (9-12), middle schools (7-8), upper elementary schools (5-6), Kennedy Elementary School and Garfield Elementary School. District updates security efforts; initiates drug-sniffing dogs pilot The Livonia Public Schools has a long history of providing a safe and secure environment for its students. 6 Board of Education meeting schedule The Board of Education is composed of seven local citizens, each elected to a four-year term of office. At least one position is open for election each year. Any registered voter who resides in the district may run for election to the school board. Regular meetings of the Board will be held at 7:00 p.m. in the Board of Education office, Farmington Rd., Livonia, MI on the first and third Mondays of each month with the following exceptions: Sept. 3, 2007; Dec. 17, 2007; Jan. 7 & 21, 2008; Feb. 18, 2008; April 7 & 21, 2008; and May 5, Proposed minutes of the Board meetings are available for public inspection during regular business hours not more than eight business days after the date of each meeting. Approved minutes will be available for public inspection during regular business hours not more than five business days after the meeting at which the minutes are approved. 7 Immunization/vision records required for all new students In order to help protect students from the spread of infectious childhood diseases, school admission will be denied to all incoming preschool, kindergarten, and out-of-state registrants who cannot show proof of immunization prior to the first day of school. Students previously enrolled in a Michigan public school will be allowed provisional enrollment subject to receipt of immunization records prior to exclusion dates posted in each building. According to the Michigan Department of Community Health, e parent or guardian of each enrolling child shall submit a statement signed by a district, county, or city health department director stating that the child has been administered the department of community health preschool vision screening test, or signed by a licensed medical or osteopathic physician or a licensed optometrist stating that the child s eyes have been examined during the preschool years after age 3 and before initial entrance. A vision test is not required if there is a statement signed by a parent or guardian to the effect that the child cannot be submitted to the test because of religious convictions. Minimum immunization requirements for kindergarten are: 4 Diphtheria-Tetanus- Pertussis (DTP) with the last dose received on or after the fourth birthday. 3 doses of Polio vaccine with the last dose received on or after the fourth birthday. 2 MMR the first on or after the first birthday and the second at least 30 days after the first AND after the age of 15 months. 3 doses of Hepatitis B vaccine given at appropriate intervals. 1 Varicella (or history of the disease-chicken pox). New entrants to LPS in grades 1-12 need to show the following immunization data to be considered completely immunized: at least 4 DTP if the student is under the age of 15 with the last dose received on or after the fourth birthday. if 15 or older, must have had a Tetanus-Diphtheria (TD) booster (due 10 years after the last DTP dose). 3 doses of Hepatitis B vaccine given at appropriate intervals. 1 Varicella (or history of the disease-chicken pox). Students attending preschool or day care will also be required to receive HIB (H. influenza type b). Since January 1, 2007, children age two months to four years, who attend preschools or a licensed childcare program, must also have the PCV7, Prevnar vaccination. Parents are urged to review these requirements and set a schedule with their pediatrician or family doctor that ensures all students will be able to start school on time. Explanation for student health/ accident insurance Parents/guardians should be aware that Livonia Public Schools does not insure students for accidental injuries during the school year. The personal insurance of the parent/ guardian is assumed to cover any and all medical treatments for such injuries. Unfortunately, some parents/guardians have limited or no medical coverage and health care is expensive. The school district makes available through a third party insurer reasonably priced student accident insurance plans ranging from approximately $23 to $140 per year. Senior high tackle football accident insurance is available at costs ranging from $120 to $240 per year. Extended dental is also available with premiums ranging from $8 to $16 per year. Application forms and brochures are available in the school offices or at the Board of Education office. Insurance application forms for senior high tackle football accident insurance are available from the athletic directors/coaches beginning in August.
