Many of the bills passed this year would have significantly impacted state and local sales tax revenues, negatively impacted municipal budgets throughout the State. The Missouri Office of Administration estimated state revenue losses of $425 million and combined municipal losses of $351 million. For Brentwood the estimated annual reduction in revenue would have exceeded $800,000. Fortunately, on June 9 the Governor vetoed 33 bills approved by lawmakers, including bills SB 584, SB 693, SB 662, SB 612, SB 829, SB 727 and HB1455 which included provisions that would have reduced or eliminated certain sales tax. It has yet to be determined if the legislature will try to overturn the Governor s vetoes. We will continue to monitor and reach out to our representatives to insure they understand the impact these types of reductions would have on municipal government s ability to provide services to our communities. Drury Hotel and Suites opened its doors on August 12, with the official ceremonial ribbon cutting held on September 17. As I ve stated before, this is a great addition for Brentwood and the mid-county area. The Bone Fish Grill is under construction, representatives are still hoping the restaurant will open late October. The Board of Aldermen approved a contract with Chiodini Architects for the final design phase of the Recreation Center renovations. Improvements will include a new roof, ice rink refrigeration system, HVAC system, electrical upgrades, locker and meeting room renovations, exterior and parking lot improvements. The project will also include building and safety code compliance upgrades including; new windows, fire suppression system and ADA requirements. We hope that the work will be completed by the end of 2015 and the facility will be able to serve the community for another 40 years. (Continued on page 2)

Do you want to reduce pollution and improve the quality of life in your backyard? Do you have a desire to create an attractive entrance to your home? Landscaping with native plants, or naturescaping, is gaining in popularity as gardeners and homeowners discover the benefits of utilizing native plants in their yards. Naturescaping can take many forms and there is a wide variety of plants to accommodate the needs of homeowners. Consider a butterfly garden, a rain garden, a living privacy screen, or a shade garden under the trees where the grass won t grow. Planting native trees, shrubs and flowers can also provide food and shelter for numerous species of birds. Native plants are adapted to our local climate and soil type and once established need no supplemental watering. Pesticide and herbicide use can be reduced or eliminated creating a healthier environment for your family. Rain garden plants help reduce storm water runoff. Native plantings mean less grass to mow and maintain. Planting native trees not only provides habitat for birds, but can provide welcome shade during the hot summer months, thereby reducing utility bills. Attractive native landscaping can potentially increase the value of your property. But, definitely the best reason to naturescape is the priceless nature encounters you can experience in your own backyard. Native plants evolved with local insects and birds and that relationship means that the more native plants you have in your landscape, the more of them you will attract. Transforming your yard can start with a simple weekend project. It is a fun, creative, ongoing experience. Many resources are available to help you and will be outlined in future articles. The park will include; large and small dog play areas, walking paths, benches, dog watering fountains and landscaping. This will be presented to the Board of Aldermen this fall. 3 Street Project Updates On August 18, 2014 the BOA approved funding the 2014 Asphalt Street Projects. This project consist of mill and overlay of four streets: Wrenwood Lane Manderly Drive Parkridge Avenue from Pine to White Helen Avenue from Florence to Litzsinger These project were scheduled to begin at the end of September and hopefully be completed by end of October pending completions of Missouri American Water street restorations and weather. Snow Plowing Season is Right Around the Corner With the winter season quickly approaching, the Public Works Department would like to ask for your help again during this winter season. Please help by remembering to do the following: -To help avoid being plowed in, driveway snow should be thrown in street just past the driveway entrance. -If you have a driveway please consider parking your vehicle in your driveway; if your street runs north and south please consider parking on the east side of the street; if your street runs east and west please consider parking on the north side of the street. Public Work's plow drivers saw a very positive response to this request last winter. On some streets the entire block pulled together to park on the one side making it easier for plows to get up and down the street. Thank you for partnering with us to make snow removal easier and quicker. Recycling Page 3 T h e C i t y o f Brentwood offers curbside single-stream recycling free of charge for all residents. Ten gallon recycling bins are available on a first come basis while supplies last by calling the Public Works Department (314) ~~~~~~~~ Sewer Lateral Hotline (314) Residents experiencing any type of sewer blockage at their home need to report the problem to the Sewer Lateral (314) Please : DO NOT FLUSH paper towels, baby or cleaning wipes or feminine products down your toilets. MSD Project Clear will invest billions of dollars over a generation in planning, designing, and building community rainscaping and system improvements, along with an ambitious program of maintenance and repair and disconnection of some residential downspouts in parts of the St. Louis County s separate sewer area from the wastewater sewer line. This work is part of an agreement between MSD and the United States Environmental Protection Agency. The St. Louis region s success with MSD Project Clear will only be possible through strong partnerships and clear communication with the public. Going forward the City will require Carbon Monoxide detectors at occupancy inspections if a dwelling has an attached garage or fuel burning appliances are installed in the dwelling. An approved carbon monoxide alarm shall be installed outside of each separate sleeping area in the immediate vicinity of the bedrooms in dwelling units within which fuel-fired appliances are installed and in dwelling units that have attached garages.
