1 The Chronicle A monthly newsletter published by The Men s Club of Sun City Center for its members January 2018 Established in 1963 Volume 26, Number 1 The GAVEL A report from your President By Joe DeFelice I would first like to wish all members and their families a happy and healthy I am humbled and honored to lead the Men s Club of SCC in the upcoming year. I would like to thank Don Murphy for the superb job leading us in Don as past president will still sit on the board and be sure to keep me in line. We are saying goodbye to two board members this year. Our long time treasurer Mike Brock is leaving us but has assured us that his replacement Denny Gray is more than qualified to handle the job. Steve Lucas our VP of programs is also leaving and is being replaced by George Bodmer. George is off to a good start and has already lined up several exciting speakers for The Men s Club is still seeking a VP of Health and anyone interested should contact me. David Floyd will move into the position of President Elect this year. My goal is to maintain the excellent reputation the Men s Club enjoys. I am also asking all members to act as ambassadors of the club. If someone new moves into your neighborhood please invite them to join you for a free lunch and see all we have to offer. I will continue to work hard to have all our events successful. I am looking forward to meeting every member of the club. I follow in the footsteps of many great past presidents. I will end by saying again I consider this position a great honor. Something Fishy Is Going On at Our January 17 Meeting What a way to start of the new year for the Men s Club. We have two very talented young ladies coming to our January 17 meeting to tell us about the exciting work going on under the auspices of the Florida Aquarium. Our speakers are Libby Joyce, Director of Advancement for the Libby Joyce Aquarium and Keri O Neil, the Coral Nursery Manager at the Center for Conservation in Apollo Beach, where she oversees the daily care of several Keri O Neil species of endangered corals native to Florida, and is working to grow The Florida Aquarium coral conservation program. This promises to be a very enlightening, interesting program. The purpose of The Men s Club of Sun City Center is to provide and promote charitable community service, cultural, social and civic interest, and to cooperate with other clubs and organizations in the best interest of Sun City Center.

3 The Chronicle Page 3 Signup Starts Now Jack Edison Jazz Band Featured At Valentine s Day Dinner-Dance Join us in SCC Community Hall on February 14 for our annual Valentine s Day Dinner Dance. Dine on Prime Rib, Chicken Marsala and Crab Stuffed Flounder and dance to the music of the Jack Edison Jazz Band. Sign-up starts now using the form at the end of this newsletter. Mail the completed form along with your check to John Bowker at the address shown on the form or bring it to the January meeting. The Jack Edison Jazz Band plays the music of the Big Band Era of the 1930's, 40"s and 50' and some more current ones as well. This Big Band Era included the music of the Glen Miller band, Duke Ellington. Tommy Dorsey and Count Basie. Band Leader Jack Edison came from a musical family and since 1971 has fronted own band. Jack also played many years with the Ringling Brothers, Barnum and Bailey Circus and for the Shrine Circus's as well. Jack s troupe of musicians played for an extremely appreciative crowd at our Spring Ladies Luncheon last year and we are very happy to have him back. The cost is $22.50 for a single or $45.00 for a couple. If you don t have a date for the event, don t worry; we will have a place for you. The reservation deadline is at 3 p.m. on Friday, February 9. All reservations must be in hand and paid by that date. A Ques on For You: Have You Paid Your 2018 Dues Yet? About Our New Deadline For Reservations As you read on the first page of this January issue of The Chronicle, we have moved the deadline for reserva ons up to 3 p.m. on the Friday preceding the mee ng or event. Thus, for the January 17 mee ng, the deadline would be 3 p.m. on the a ernoon of January 12. The deadline applies to both phone and ed reserva ons. The change provides the opportunity for our ladies in the Men s Club Office to compile the list of phoned reserva ons and provide it to John and Linda Bowker (the keepers all things reserved) before the close of business on Friday. The change also provides John and Linda Bowker the weekend to compile their reserva on list for general mee ngs and table assignments for other events such as the February 14 Valen ne s Dinner Dance. RESERVATIONS MADE AFTER 3 P.M. ON DEADLINE FRIDAY MAY NOT BE HONORED. DECISIONS WILL BE MADE ON A CASE BY CASE BASIS, DEPENDING ON SPACE AVAILABILITY AND CATERING CONCERNS.

4 The Chronicle Page 4 Free Donuts &Coffee Club s Senior Fraud Forum To Be Held on March 6 Florida s Attorney General, Pam Bondi, notes on her website that Scam artists believe that senior citizens are an easy target, but informed seniors like any other consumer can protect themselves from these financial predators. The Men s Club shares this belief that informed consumers are better able to protect themselves against schemers who are out to get us. Because of the success of the club s Consumer Protection Fair in October, and because of the importance of educating seniors and protecting them from becoming victims of crime and fraud, your Men s Club is planning a second consumer fraud event for March 6, The event is entailed Fighting Fraud Against Seniors and will be Oglesby held in SCC Community Hall and will be open to everyone in the greater Sun City Center community. This is not a repeat of the October event, but will present new information and speakers. Confirmed speakers include Jackie Callaway, ABC Action News Consumer Reporter, Andrew Sekela, F.B.I. Supervisory Special Agent for Callaway White Collar Crime, and Bryan Oglesby, Outreach Director, Better Business Bureau of West Florida. The club will be offering FREE coffee and ELITE donuts to attendees. Doors will open at 8:30 and the event will conclude by 11:15 a.m. Volunteers Need to Staff Forum The Men s Club needs a few good men to assist with the distribution of coffee and donuts and with cleanup at the Senior Fraud Forum. Jon Lehr will have a sign-up sheet at the January meeting and will be there to answer any questions you might have. Extra donuts for all who sign up to help! Only a Few Tickets Left for Feb. 9 Dinner & Cocktails with Billy Joel Our tickets are almost all claimed by members and guest. But there may be a few seats left if you d like to join us on the evening of February 9 when The Men s Club travels by charter bus to Amalie Arena for a stellar dinner in the exclusive Chase Club followed by a spectacular concert by the one and only Billy Joel. The bus will leave the Community Hall at 5:15p.m. sharp and Billy Joel performs at 8 p.m. Our group will have free rein in the Chase Club for 90 minutes prior to that for the upscale buffet dinner served their at the various carving stations. In addition, there will be an open bar for that time period. Our seats are then right off the Chase Lounge in Club 17. Very comfortable seats overlooking the stage and floor. The cost is $ per person. When newly installed president Joe DeFelice steps up to the podium in January to call us to attention, you can be sure he will do it with a voice of authority. Joe is a retired police officer from Connecticut. Joe moved to Sun City Center four years ago and lives with his wife, Jill,on New Bedford Drive. Joe and Jill two grown, married children with 3 grandchildren. Joe loves to golf and sits on the board of Caloosa Country Club. Two years ago he join the Men s Club board as Secretary and for the last year has been serving as President Elect.
