6 NOTICES TO THE BAR Vol. 104 No. 9 3/3/17 DELAWARE COUNTY BAR ASSOCIATION CLE Seminar Wednesday, March 15, 2017 Help! They re Changing the Rules & They Impact Everything Filed in a Pennsylvania Court! Place: Delaware County Bar Association Building, 335 W. Front Street, Media, PA Registration & Lunch: 12:00 Noon (BRING A BROWN BAG LUNCH) Seminar: 12:30 p.m. 1:30 p.m. Cost: $35.00 for DCBA Members/$45.00 Non-Members Worth: 1.0 Substantive CLE Credit Hour Speaker: Daniel J. Siegel, Esq. If you or your firm files any documents in any Pennsylvania court, or you are affiliated with any Pennsylvania court, you should attend this program. The Pennsylvania Supreme Court has adopted a new Public Access Policy of the Unified Judicial System of Pennsylvania: Case Records of Appellate and Trial Courts, which dramatically changes how attorneys will practice in Pennsylvania courts. The Policy goes into effect on January 8, 2018 and applies to all court records, including civil, family and criminal matters. This one-hour CLE program will provide an overview of the new Policy and discuss how attorneys, law firms and courts can prepare for its implementation. The program will be presented by Attorney Daniel J. Siegel, who was the Pennsylvania Bar Association s representative on the Supreme Court Working Group whose recommendations were adopted by the Court. Litigants who ignore the requirements will be subject to sanctions. In addition, if a filed document fails to comply with the Policy, a court may, upon motion or on its own initiative, with or without a hearing, order that a filed document be sealed, redacted and/or amended. A court may also impose sanctions upon litigants who violate the Policy. The new Policy (1) specifies the types of information to be safeguarded from public view; (2) requires lawyers to redact confidential and sensitive information in court-filed documents; (3) creates uniform standards specifying how trial and appellate courts respond to requests from the public for case records; and (4) specifies the maximum fees that a court may charge for copying records. Attendees will receive an overview of the Policy, and be provided with practical insight into how attorneys should prepare for its implementation.
