1 Volume 19, No. 4 SERVING MICHIGAN'S COACHES December 2015 December Recruiting Night Events Continue to Grow EXTRA POINT Matt King, Outside Linebackers Coach at Olivet College, describes the program at the MIAA school for a group of prospects at the Carman Ainsworth Recruiting Night, Tuesday, December 8. he MHSFCA finished its December Recruiting Nights with the Night at Walled Lake Western on Thursday, 10 December. WLW was the last of nine Recruiting Nights held across Michigan during the first two weeks of December. The 2015 round of Recruiting Nights kicked off in Grayling on December first. The Association s first Recruiting Fairs were held in December of 2011 and drew coaches from 28 colleges and 65 high schools to seven events. This Fall, nine high school locations saw 127 high school coaches visit 34 colleges. While we didn t keep track of prospects attendance in 2011, the number of prospects that attended the events was just a handful. This year s Recruiting Nights saw over 530 prospects (and many of their parents) attend the nine events. The Recruiting Nights are designed to bring high school coaches together with college coaches in a relaxed, out-of-school atmosphere. In the first part of the evening, high school coaches seat themselves at cafeteria or library MHSFCA Membership runs January - December visit: MHSFCA.com continued on page 4 Inside: Important Dates...2 Region Contacts...2 Newsletter Delivery...3 Glazier Clinic...5 Regional Coach of Year Voting...6 Regional Directors Duties...7 Kids Should Play Football...7 All Star Game...8 Quick Lane Bowl...8 Academic All State Teams...9 Academic All State Individual...10 Assistant Coach Awards...12 Women of the Year Awards...12 Reading Awards...12 Leadership Awards...12 Regional Coach Awards...13 State Coach of the Year State Champs...14 Honorary Awards...15 Detroit Lions Coach of the Year...15 Clinic Registration Form...17 Leadership Conference...18 Wing-T Clinic...20 Youth Football Clinic...21 Lifetime Membership...23 Member Benefits...23 Membership Application...24

4 December 2015 MHSFCA NEWSLETTER Page 4 December Recruiting Night Events continued from page 1 tables and college coaches come to them to get information on potential prospects and to network. Even in years when a high school may not have a viable prospect for a particular college, the visit helps to establish a relationship between the coaches, something that s difficult to do during the school day. In the second part of the evening, prospects - freshmen through seniors - and their parents enter the facility and move between the colleges displays, meeting the college coaches or representatives and filling out information sheets for those colleges in which they have an interest. Prospects and parents learn about the football programs, but also find out about admissions procedures, costs and financial aid. The Association thanks the coaches of the nine high schools who hosted this year s Recruiting Nights (most of whom have hosted since the beginning): Tim Sanchez, Graying; David Janicki, Hartford; David Howes, Escanaba; Noel Dean, Lowell; Gary Griffith, Troy; Jerry Parker, Carman Ainsworth; Scott Farley, Jackson; Mark Tyler, Edsel Ford; Mike Zdebski, Walled Lake Western. While we still have a lot of high school coaches who haven t taken advantage of the Recruiting Nights (for some the distances are too great or the schedule just doesn t work), more and more MHSFCA member coaches are finding the Recruiting Night experience rewarding for themselves and especially for their athletes and their athletes parents. We hope this will continue next fall. 8 December 2015 MHSFCA NEWSLETTER Page 8 What was old is new again in 2016! MHSFCA will be playing an East vs West All Star Game June 25th 2016 at Saginaw Valley State University. fter establishing All Star dominance over Ohio the past two seasons the MHSFCA will be going back to the East vs. West format for As we move forward in planning for the game, you as coaches should be aware of your responsibilities that will go a long way to making this year s game a tremendous experience for the players, coaches, and football fans from across the state. First, and probably most importantly, please check your s for the electronic nomination forms that were sent out the week of December 7th. This year we are not requiring each All Star team to have a certain number of players from the classes A, B, C, and D but, instead are requiring each team to have at least one representative from each MHSFCA region across the state. The West team will be made-up players from, Regions 1-9 plus an 8-man player. The East will have players from Regions with an 8-man representative as well. The rest of the 40 man roster will be filled with at-large selections with no more than one player from an individual high school. With these new roster requirements it is more important than ever that we get at least one nomination from each coach across the state. Nominations will be due no later than January 15th with the final rosters being selected early in February. The All Star committee is very excited about the future of our game and the East-West format. We will be giving 80 deserving players a great experience and at the same time showcasing everything that is great about high school football in our state All Star Coaches - East West Game: EAST Cory Parker, River Rouge Scott McNitt, Clinton Tom Milanov, Warren Mott John Herstein, Farmington Hills Harrison WEST Dennis Hopkins, Linden Dennis Reinhart, Montrose Hill McCloy Tim Sanchez, Grayling Matt Koziak, Mona Shores Quick Lane Bowl Central Michigan vs. Minnesota he 2015 Quick Lane Bowl will be played on Monday, December 28 at 5 PM ET at Ford Field and televised by ESPN2.
