20 December 2017 MHSFCA NEWSLETTER Page 20 Guide to Securing Your Child s Credit Future Courtesy of Reviews.com t s no secret that the American culture has money problems, but more specifically credit problems. Consider the following statistics: every three months, 250,000 new families enter into foreclosure, and the average family has $16,000 in credit card debt. One reason American s poor relationship with credit may be that many states educational systems aren t great at producing financially literate graduates. That s why we created this guide to empower parents with a helpful step by step process that will provide them the tools they need to ensure that their children develop a healthy relationship with credit, and understand financial literacy by the time they graduate. While this guide is a great resource for everyone, it can be particularly useful for parents who don t feel qualified to teach their children credit-related concepts whether that feeling comes from personal struggles with debt, a lack of aptitude for grasping difficult financial concepts, or a simple lack of education on these subjects. Regardless of a parent s relationship with credit, there s a lot they can and should teach their children. Just because children aren t going to be directly interacting with personal credit or financial products until they graduate high school, doesn t mean that parents have to wait until then to prepare for their child s credit future. Young children can be helped to form sound financial habits, and as they get older, they can be educated about Guide to Securing Your College Student s Credit Future ollege students don t always have a healthy relationship with credit. For instance, Stephen Swift (managing attorney for Southern Colorado Bankruptcy Law Firm) relates that bankruptcy attorneys are seeing younger and younger clients who are seeking bankruptcy protection because they got in over their heads with credit cards. Unfortunately, credit cards aren t the only concern for students in 2015, the average college student graduated with $30,100 in student loan debt; in 2016, 11.2 percent of student loan debt was in default or delinquent by 90+ days. Even more, the student loan situation is getting worse, not better. In 2005, the average student loan payment was $227 (when adjusted for inflation) 10 years later, the average payment was 50 percent higher ($351). A recent study conducted by Sallie Mae highlighted some concerning statistics regarding the behavior and understanding of college students as it relates to credit cards. increasingly complex credit-related concepts. This guide will help parents understand how to promote positive credit awareness and responsible financial habits throughout a child s development. Important concepts and behaviors will be highlighted, and examples of activities and additional resources will be given to use in four critical stages of development. The four stages of development used in this guide are: Preschool and Early Elementary (Ages 4-6) Elementary (Ages 7-10) Middle School and Jr. High (Ages 11-13) High School (Ages 14-18) Overall, this guide identifies four primary ways for parents to prepare for their children s credit future: Habit Forming: Helping children to form solid financial habits Education: Ensuring that children understand critical concepts regarding credit and debt before graduation Fraud Protection: Protecting children by teaching them to avoid identity theft through proper handling of personal information and how to steer clear of financial frauds Credit Building: Developing a plan to establish credit history for children before they graduate The complete Financial Guide can be accessed on the web at Courtesy of Reviews.com 35 percent of students use their credit cards sometimes or regularly to make purchases that they don t have the money to pay off. Older students (21 to 24 year-olds) have an average balance of over $1,000 on their credit cards. Only 31% of college students demonstrated that they have a working knowledge of basic credit-related concepts. Only a slim percentage could answer all three questions that relate to interest accumulation, the effect that payment behavior has on the cost of credit, and the effect that the repayment term has on the cost of credit. Where Parents Fit In: Some parents may assume that their students will learn proper credit habits and financial behavior in college, but that assumption may not be correct. In fact, 71 percent of college students say they learned money management from their parents, and the percentage is higher (81%) for younger students. Only 12 percent indicated that they learned about financial management from a college course.

21 December 2017 MHSFCA NEWSLETTER Page 21 Guide to Securing Your College Student s Credit Future Overall, parents should help their students find the balance between misusing credit and staying away from it all together. No parent wants their students to graduate with a ton of debt that will haunt them for years to come. To help avoid this, parents can teach their students to view credit as a tool, and they can help them learn how to use it responsibly. Modeling healthy financial and credit behaviors and setting clear expectations are the best ways for parents to secure their student s credit future. The Purpose of This Guide The purpose of this guide is to empower parents to help their college students (or young adults of similar age) transition to the real world by avoiding credit pitfalls and developing solid financial habits that will set them up for success. Part 1 covers these four aspects of personal finance: 1. Credit Reports and Scores 2. Budgeting 3. Introduction to Investing and Retirement 4. The Dangers of Identity Theft and Scams continued from page 20 We will also describe positive behaviors and habits associated with four types of student credit, and provide parents with the resources they need to assist their students in putting them into practice. The types of credit that we will discuss in Part 2 are: 1. Credit Cards 2. Student Loans 3. Car Loans 4. Payday Loans Part 3 provides a guide to getting out of debt for parents to utilize if their students get in over their head. We finish by listing additional resources and teaching materials. The complete Financial Guide can be accessed on the web at The Best Scholarship Search Platforms of 2017 Courtesy of Reviews.com ollege is the most expensive it s ever been. With tuition rates rising an average of 3.5% every year, the average undergraduate now finishes their degree with over $37,000 in student debt. Scholarships are one of the best ways to reduce these growing costs and scholarship search platforms exist to help students find the most relevant ones. These platforms compile large databases of available scholarships and provide filters to allow students to maximize their searches. Review.com created a guide to review the best scholarship search platforms and instruct students on how to use them effectively to find as many opportunities as possible. To determine the best scholarship search platforms, they spent over 200 hours researching 17 of the most popular sites across five core metrics including search functionality, scholarship availability, ease of use, application tools, and additional helpful resources. The best scholarship search platform was Fastweb. They scored the highest out of all 17 platforms because they were the easiest to use, had the most tools, and had among the most available scholarships with the highest dollar amounts. This search engine is best for most students including high school, undergraduate, and graduate. They also recommend Cappex. This platform scored consistently high in the most important categories of scholarship availability, ease of use, and tools. It is the best and best for students who want to be able to apply for and track the status of a large number of scholarships. What is covered in the guide: 1.The major challenges students face when searching for scholarships 2.How the right search engine can help students overcome these challenges 3.What students should know before applying for a scholarship 4.The most important features of a great scholarship search platform 5.The best scholarship search platforms of Advice on early preparation to qualify for scholarships 7.Tips on applying for scholarships 8.Our full methodology and scoring process The complete scholarship guide can be accessed online at:
