What is Baja SAE? Sponsored by SAE International, Baja SAE was founded in 1976 and has since grown to become the premier intercollegiate design series.

Student teams control every aspect of the process by handling design, fabrication, team management, and marketing. At the end of the academic year, these teams attend three national competitions.

2 What is Baja SAE? Sponsored by SAE International, Baja SAE was founded in 1976 and has since grown to become the premier intercollegiate design series. The goal of the competition is to give real world experience in engineering design, manufacturing, and marketing through the production of a single-seat, off-road racing vehicle. Student teams control every aspect of the process by handling design, fabrication, team management, and marketing. At the end of the academic year, these teams attend three national competitions. At these events, students take their vehicles through several competitive challenges including safety inspections, design presentations, a maneuverability course, tractor pull, hill climb, and a four-hour endurance race against teams from across the country and around the globe. About the CWRU Motorsports Team The competition season marks Case Western Reserve University s seventeenth consecutive year of participation in the collegiate design series. Since 2001, the CWRU Baja team has been known for creative designs that challenged conventional thinking, such as the first implementation of a mid-engine vehicle in the Baja competition. The team works year-round on design, manufacturing, and testing, to prepare for competitions. In recent years the team has focused on designing cars that use high performance materials to be both durable and lightweight; our most recent car, one of the lightest at competition, weighed only 310 pounds without a driver. We strive to make as many components on the car in house to practice our engineering skills as well as to keep the car as lightweight as possible. 1 CWRU Motorsports Team Sponsorship Packet

Each Baja SAE team is responsible for the funding and manufacture of all components for their car, except for the 10HP Briggs & Stratton engine given to each team by SAE.

Last year CWRU Baja spent about $20,000 to build the vehicle, and $18,000 to attend competitions. CWRU Motorsports will be attending all three Baja SAE competitions this year which will be held at Maryland, Kansas, and Oregon. In addition to attending all three national competitions this year, CWRU Baja attends University of Louisville s Midnight Mayhem, an unofficial competition held in the Fall each year. Competition season is the peak of every year, where we put our hard work to the test against teams from around the world. Last season marked the best ever season in the history of CWRU Motorsports. The team attended the California and Kansas Competition where we finished 9th and 8th overall respectively. These were the first two top ten finishes in the history of the team. At Louisville, earlier this fall the team finished first overall in acceleration. We are extremely proud of last year s accomplishments and are excited to continue to grow and improve as a team in the upcoming season. Our goal is to finish in the top ten at all three competitions and break into the top five in at least one competition. We believe that we are now one of the premier teams in Baja SAE. For this season s vehicle design, the CWRU Motorsports team will focus on retaining reliability and durability, while fine-tuning the car s handling characteristics, removing unnecessary weight on the car, and achieving peak drivetrain performance. The team has been using its data acquisition to gather data on the performance of the car as we continue to improve our designs. Such testing includes major data analysis on drivetrain and suspension components such as the continuously-variable transmission (CVT) and shock absorbers. Such components will be extensively tested on the team s older vehicles to ensure quality performance before they are integrated into this year s car. The vehicle will be made lightweight by utilizing high-strength aluminum and fiber composites. Finally, there is an emphasis on making the vehicle highly serviceable, facilitating hot-pit repairs when something does inevitably break. 2 CWRU Motorsports Team Sponsorship Packet

This support would allow us greater freedom in our design to use higher-quality parts, and create opportunities for additional research and experimentation. With a team that is constantly evolving as students join and graduate, we are constantly educating our newer members. To help with this process, we are also looking for mentors, to teach our team about relevant engineering or professional topics, and discuss design choices. This will help our team having a deeper understanding of our work, and build a better car. CWRU Motorsports proudly displays sponsor logos on the car. We take our cars to numerous campus events and expose them to thousands of students, professors, engineers, and spectators at each of the three competitions we will attend this year. New this year, we will also place the logo of gold level sponsors and above on our new race trailer with which we will drive nearly 8,000 miles with across the country during this year s competition season. This year the CWRU Baja car is projected to generate nearly 20,000 impressions. Sponsors are also invited to our unveiling event to meet the team, see the finished car, and experience the impact they have made. By partnering with CWRU Baja, your organization is building a strong relationship with a group of top students from one of the nation s elite engineering schools, giving you early access to skilled future employees, and the opportunity to be involved in an exciting student-run project. Benefits for Students The CWRU Motorsports program gives students from multiple disciplines a fantastic opportunity to grow as individuals and team members. Students are able to experience the managerial, financial, and logistical aspects of working on a real-world engineering challenge. 5 of skill sets. At each competition students are given the opportunity to interact with engineers and other students from around the globe. In addition to this experience, Baja maintains a strong Alumni connection to past members. This gives current students an unparalleled opportunity to communicate with Alumni on issues relating to Baja, as well as engineering opportunities after CWRU. The Baja SAE Collegiate Design Series is respected as an indication of students ability to approach a design challenge. Engineering firms look favorably upon design and manufacturing experience and Baja provides students with an opportunity to solve real life engineering problems. This gives younger team members an advantage when looking for internships and co-op experiences in addition to enhancing the prospects of upperclassmen when looking for full-time jobs or applying to graduate school programs. 4 CWRU Motorsports Team Sponsorship Packet

6 Sponsorship Levels Sponsor/Mentor For donating any amount of sponsorship or mentorship, your organization will receive: Your organization s name and a linked logo on our website Bronze For donating at least $500 or an equivalent number of parts/services, your organization will receive the base level benefits in addition to: A small logo on one of the car s body panels Silver For donating at least $1,000 or an equivalent number of parts/services, your organization will receive the bronze level benefits in addition to: A medium logo on one of the car s body panels (replaces the small logo) Gold For donating at least $2,500 or an equivalent number of parts/services, your organization will receive the silver level benefits in addition to: A large logo on one of the car s body panels (replaces the medium logo) A logo displayed on our new race trailer Platinum For donating at least $5,000 or an equivalent number of parts/services, your organization will receive the gold level benefits in addition to Other benefits which may be arranged by contacting the team.
