2 National Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition Competition Profile It s the first day of your first job after graduating from college, and you ve just been told that you are responsible for control of all the company s information systems. You know very little about the networks existing security level configuration, or what software has been installed on it. You have one hour to familiarize yourself with the network and systems, and to begin loading any missing security updates and patches...because that s when the real fun begins! The Red Team (comprised of volunteer Information Security professionals from industry and the military) start actively probing and attacking your network, whether you re ready for it or not. In the midst of all this commotion, your boss expects you to keep up with the business needs and user demands while maintaining service level agreements. This is just the kickoff of the National Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition (NCCDC). NCCDC, which lasts 3 days, is the first competition that focuses exclusively on the operational aspect of managing and protecting an existing commercial network infrastructure. In addition to exposing students to real life situations that confront info security specialists, it benefits corporations by creating a potential hiring pool of students who have had an opportunity to practice what they ve learned in a classroom setting. Audience and Attendees The National CCDC participants are teams of Computer Science, Information Technology, and Information Security students that won their regional competitions, as well as Information Security professionals from various entities, faculty, and sponsors. There is a kickoff press conference for print and live media, as well as guided tours for VIPs and media throughout the 3 day competition.

The winning teams from each regional competition are invited to attend and compete in the National competition. 6 National Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition Media Exposure CIAS has been actively briefing the NCCDC to a national audience of academic and professional organizations such as ISSA ( ISACA ( and all attendees of Def Con, in order to expand the participant pool. Our literature features information on our various sponsors. CIAS will issue local and national press releases prior to, during, and after the CCDC featuring our corporate sponsors and contributors. Benefits CCDC provides college students a unique learning experience and the opportunity to gain hands on experience with state of the art systems that may not be available at their academic institutions. Companies get the opportunity to meet and interact with leading students specializing in computer security from a variety of educational institutions around the US. Time is provided during the competition for recruitment and networking, which is mutually beneficial to the students and the companies attending CCDC. This is also a great opportunity to generate interest for products and services with the next generation of professionals. Being a sponsor of this event was a great experience on multiple levels. First, we were able to witness a fantastic learning event and watch teams make real-time decisions to understand how they go about solving problems. Second, we were able to watch people who had never previously had experience with our product set it up and configure it. This gave us tremendous insight into how people approach the installation of our technology. Third, we had the opportunity to discuss with each of the teams the things that they liked and disliked about our product, which gave us great feedback on ways to improve our product. Beyond what we, as a vendor, got out of the event, we found it particularly profound to be a part of what is destined to be the Nation's premier collegiate IT Security competition. This is one of the few competitions that brings real-world scenarios to the competition, and focuses on defending a business network as opposed to hacking into other networks.
