12 January 2018 Showcase Student Talent Art-Infused Core Classes Discover Your Art Passion Buffalo High School Arts Magnet Attracting Students The Buffalo High School Arts Magnet program promotes academic excellence through artistic inquiry, motivating students with an interest in visual, performing, literary, media and applied arts. The curriculum is based on the belief that infusing the arts across the academic disciplines improves academic achievement, supports the growth of 21st century skills, and prepares students for a career path they choose. The arts actively engage kids to think creatively, collaborate with peers and advisors, apply critical thinking skills, and learn to communicate their ideas. Because the arts cross cultural and socio-economic boundaries, they prepare students to become inclusive and creative members of their community. 31 Buildings and Grounds Special Education Over 40 Buildings and Grounds staff members help keep landscapes and the 10 school facilities, that cover just over one million square feet, in top condition. The Buildings and Grounds Department has been working hard to limit district-wide energy use. The district is engaged in a district-wide effort to conserve energy and reduce expenses using low or no cost strategies. By the end of the school year, eight schools were recognized as Energy Star Buildings and the district has been recognized as an Energy Star Leader from the U.S. Environmen- tal Protection Agency. In 13 years, the district has avoided nearly $4.8 million in energy costs. Questions? Contact Buildings and Grounds at marks the third year of construction projects that stems from a successful 2014 bond election. Work began in the spring/summer of As a result of the projects, Buffalo Community Middle School has seen renovations to the pool area and two new health classrooms. Buffalo-Hanover-Montrose Schools provide Special Education and related services to students found to be eligible. If you suspect your child has a disability which affects their access to a free and appropriate education, contact your school psychologist or the Special Education Department at Annual Notice Regarding Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 Section 504 is an Act prohibiting discrimination against anyone with a disability in any program receiving federal financial assistance. The Act defines a person with a disability as anyone who: 1. has a physical disability or mental impairment which substantially limits one or more major life activities. 2. has a record of such an impairment. 3. is regarded as having such an impairment. In order to fulfill its obligation under Section 504, the Buffalo-Hanover-Montrose School District has a policy that states that no discrimination against any person with a disability will knowingly be permitted in any of the programs and practices of the school system. The district has specific responsibilities under the Act, which include the responsibility to identify, evaluate and, if the child is determined to be eligible under Section 504, afford access to educational services. Food Service The Buffalo-Hanover-Montrose School Meals Program serves breakfast and lunch at all schools each school day. Each student is assigned an account pin number which parents can also access in the Parent Portal to track their child s account. Meal accounts are debit accounts (not credit), so a positive balance must be maintained. Meal Payments and PayPAMS Meal payments may be made at each school by cash or check. They can also be made online through PayPAMS at paypams.com. PayPAMS is a FREE service provided for all families. Parents can use the program to monitor meal account activity and account balances. There is also a FREE app that parents can download to their smart phones. School Meals School meals are offer vs. serve. That means a student must choose 3 of the 4 menu items at breakfast and 3 of the 5 menu items at lunch (one choice must be a fruit or vegetable) to be considered a reimbursable meal (federal and state governments reimburse the school for the meal which allows the district to charge a lower price). This gives students an opportunity to choose their meal and help reduce waste. Meals are planned according to federal guidelines, which cover not only the amount of food offered, but also the nutrient content. A breakfast will include an age appropriate portion of: Bread/Grains Fruit or Juice Milk A lunch will include an age appropriate portion of: Meat/Meat Alternate Breads/Grains Fruits and Vegetables Milk Free Meals Free meals are available for families who qualify. Families who may qualify are encouraged to complete an application. The information on the application is confidential. Applications may be completed at any time during the school year. Forms are available in each school office, online at bhmschools.org under Quick Links on the homepage, at the Food Service Office at 214 NE First Avenue, Buffalo or call Free Breakfast for All Kindergarteners All elementary schools serve free breakfast to all kindergarten students throughout the school year. Free Summer Food Service Program FREE breakfast and lunch is served throughout the summer for all children 18 and under. Check the district website for times and locations. Ala Carte and Milk Ala carte, a carton of milk, or extra items, are the same price for all students and adults. Families need to deposit money in their student s account to cover any extra or ala carte items selected. Ala carte at the elementary is limited to an extra milk, juice or menu item. Ala carte at BCMS is small snacks or beverages that are sold in addition to the meal. Ala carte at BHS is more appropriate for older students and items are clearly labeled and priced. A carton of milk to go with a bag lunch, brought from home, is an ala carte purchase and is the same price for students and adults. Eat with Your Child Parents are welcome to eat breakfast or lunch with their student. Call the food manager in their school to make a meal reservation.
