Dolson had 16 points and nine rebounds in a win against No. 15/13 Louisville, connecting on 8-of-11 from the floor. She had a careerhigh 25 points, adding seven rebounds and dishing out six assists in a win against RV/23 Syracuse. She reached the 1,000-point plateau in the first half against the Orange. B I G E A S T F r e s h m a n o f t h e W e e k Chanise Jenkins, DePaul Fr., G (Chicago, Ill./Whitney Young) Jenkins tied a season-high with 14 points in a loss at RV/23 Syracuse on Jan. 15. She had seven assists with only one turnover, grabbed four rebounds and made four 3-pointers. In a win against Providence, Jenkins had eight points, two steals, seven assists, seven rebounds and made both of her free throw attempts. B I G E A S T H o n o r R o l l Brittany Hrynko, DePaul, So., G Hrynko averaged 18.0 ppg and 8.0 rpg as the Blue Demons went 1-1 last week. She had seven steals and 16 assists. Andrea White, Georgetown, Jr., F White averaged a double-double with 16.0 ppg and 11.0 rpg in a 1-1 week. She shot 55 percent from the field and had six assists and four blocks. Skylar Diggins, Notre Dame, Sr., G Diggins averaged 16.5 ppg in a 2-0 week for the Irish, adding 15 assists and nine steals. Katherine Plouffe, Marquette, Jr., F Plouffe averaged 13.0 ppg and 9.5 rpg in a 2-0 week for Marquette, while dishing out 10 assists. Laura Sweeney, Villanova, Sr., F Sweeney averaged 17.5 ppg and 9.5 rpg in a 2-0 week. Those offerings will now include new on-demand programming in the form of webisodes and vignettes produced in XOS Digital s production facility. BIGEAST.tv also will feature highlights of every nationally televised BIG EAST contest posted following the conclusion of every game and other on-demand interviews and features. In addition, fans can access BIGEAST.tv for live streaming of certain conference championships, which will be offered free to consumers. The BIG EAST Web site will continue to be the exclusive home for women s basketball Championship Central, which is a one-stop shop for conference tournament live stats, blogs, results, box scores, recaps, photo galleries, video highlights and more. Weekly Awards The BIG EAST names a Player and Freshman of the Week, as well as five Honor Roll selections, each Monday during the regular season. Winners are chosen from nominations provided by the BIG EAST sports information directors. The information will be released from the BIG EAST office and will be listed in the conference release and on the league web site. Annual Awards The All-BIG EAST First, Second, Honorable Mention and Freshman Teams, Player of the Year, Freshman of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year and Coach of the Year are chosen from a vote of the league s 16 head coaches at the conclusion of the regular season. A Most Improved Player, a Sixth-Man Award, a Women s Basketball Scholar-Athlete and a Sportsmanship Award winner are also selected. Coaches are not allowed to vote for themselves or their own players. The awards will be announced prior to the BIG EAST Championship start on March 2 through an release from the Conference office. Cincinnati leads the all-time series 5-4, but the Hoyas have won the last four. Last game: The Bearcats lost to No. 3/2 Connecticut at home on Jan. 26. Notes Cincinnati jumped out to an early 4-0 lead, hitting its first two shots after grabbing the opening tip, but Connecticut responded by firing at a nearly 41-percent clip (15-of-37) from the field, including five triples, to lead 41-9 at the half. Sophomore Alyesha Lovett led the scoring for the Bearcats, pouring in nine points, the fourth-straight game she has scored eight or more points. Junior Dayeesha Hollins had seven points and shot 2-of-11 from the field. She continues to lead the team in scoring at 15.7 ppg. The Bearcats struggled from the field, shooting 12.5 percent (3-of-24) from the floor in the first half and 20-percent (11-of-54) for the game. The Huskies scored 32 of the 67 points in the paint and held a 14-6 advantage on the offensive glass. Connecticut Huskies 18-1 Overall (8-1 Home; 7-0 Away; 3-0 Neutral) 5-1 BIG EAST (2-1 Home; 3-0 Away) Next game: No. 3/2 UConn returns home to host Villanova on Jan. 29 at the XL Center. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. ET and will be televised on SNY. UConn leads the all-time series Last game: No. 3/2 UConn won at Cincinnati on Jan. 26 and improved to 8-0 all-time against the Bearcats. The Huskies have won six in a row. Notes Junior Stefanie Dolson led the offense with 15 points in just 25 minutes. She shot 7-of-10 from the field and 1-of-1 from 3-point range. Dolson is 3-of-9 from 3-point range this season. The Huskies held Cincinnati to just three field goals in the first half and held a 41-9 lead at the intermission. UConn closed the half with a 24-1 run. The nine points were the fewest UConn has allowed in an opening half this season. No starter played more than 25 minutes and UConn had nine different players record a field goal. Sophomore Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis finished with 8 points and nine rebounds in 25 minutes. Freshman Breanna Stewart had 10 points and seven rebounds in 22 minutes off the bench. DePaul Blue Demons 15-5 Overall (11-1 Home; 2-3 Away; 2-1 Neutral) 4-2 BIG EAST (3-0 Home; 1-2 Away) Next game: DePaul hosts Pittsburgh on Jan. 29 at 8 p.m. ET. The Blue Demons lead the BIG EAST regular season series 5-2. Last game: NR/RV DePaul beat Cincinnati on Jan. 22 in the Queen City. Notes Sophomore Brittany Hrynko scored 19 points, and made four free throws in the final 15.7 seconds to seal DePaul s win. Hrynko finished the night 6-of-16 from the field and was 5-of-6 from the free throw line. Junior Jasmine Penny added 11 points. DePaul went to locker room with a advantage. The Blue Demons 19 points were the fewest for the team this season in a half. The Blue Demon defense held Cincinnati to just 25 percent (18-for-72) from the field and recorded 12 blocks. Freshman Megan Podkowa had five rejections, the third-best total in school history. Senior Katherine Harry led DePaul with 16 rebounds. It was her 12th double-digit rebound performance of the season and fourth 15+ outing. Cincinnati outrebounded DePaul and held a offensive rebounding advantage. DePaul held Cincinnati to just 14 first half points, the lowest for an opponent this season. Georgetown Hoyas 12-8 Overall (7-2 Home; 4-6 Away; 1-0 Neutral) 3-4 BIG EAST (2-1 Home; 1-3 Away) Next game: The Hoyas remain home, hosting Cincinnati on Jan. 29 at 8 p.m. ET. Cincinnati won the first five games in the BIG EAST regular season, but Georgetown has won the last four. Last game: Georgetown defeated Pittsburgh at home on Jan. 26. Notes The Hoyas never trailed as senior Sugar Rodgers hit a 3-pointer just two minutes in to take the lead, which the Hoyas would not relinquish. Rodgers led all scorers with 25 points, while also dishing out nine assists and grabbing five steals. She shot 8-of-28 from the field and 3-of-12 from 3-point range. Rodgers leads the league in scoring (24.1) and ranks in the top-five nationally. Junior Andrea White added 12 points and a team-high seven rebounds. Georgetown shot 41.3 percent for the game and forced 22 Panther turnovers, but was outrebounded The Hoyas had 21 points off of turnovers. GU led at the break. Louisville Cardinals 16-4 Overall (9-1 Home; 4-3 Away; 3-0 Neutral) 4-2 BIG EAST (2-0 Home; 2-2 Away) Next game: The No. 13/12 Cardinals return to action on Jan. 27 as they host Georgetown at 1:30 p.m. ET at the KFC Yum! Center. The game will be televised on ESPNU. Louisville leads the all-time series 5-2, but Georgetown won the last matchup in Kentucky, on Feb Last game: No. 13/12 Louisville won at Marquette on Jan. 22. The game was televised nationally on the CBS Sports Network. Notes The Golden Eagles held a lead with 13 seconds remaining, but Louisville senior Monique Reid took the inbounds pass the length of the court for the Cards only fastbreak basket of the night and a lead with seven seconds remaining. Reid finished with nine points shooting 4-of-7 from the floor in 24 minutes off the bench. Junior Shoni Schimmel scored a game-high 19 points, including five 3-pointers. Sophomore Sara Hammond added 11 points and 10 rebounds for her third double-double of the year. Louisville finished the game shooting 37-percent from the field and 35-percent from behind the arc. Marquette finished the game shooting 47- percent from the field and 43-percent from behind the arc. Marquette held a rebounding advantage. Marquette Golden Eagles 10-9 Overall (5-5 Home; 4-4 Away; 1-0 Neutral) 2-4 BIG EAST (0-3 Home; 2-1 Away) Next game: Marquette returns home to host Rutgers on Jan. 30 at 8 p.m. ET. The Scarlet Knights have won all seven BIG EAST regular season meetings. Last game: Marquette lost at USF on Jan. 26. Notes Sophomore Arlesia Morse and junior Katherine Plouffe each recorded double figures. Morse returned after she sat out one game with an injury and recorded 15 points, while Plouffe tallied 10 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Senior Sarina Simmons took down eight boards and had eight points with two steals. The Golden Eagles shot 32 percent (16-of-50) from the field and pulled down 37 rebounds. Freshman Brooklyn Pumroy sank a 3-pointer in the final two seconds of the first half, which broke a 4:42 drought for the Golden Eagles. MU trailed USF at halftime. Marquette shot 22.2 percent in the frame. 4 B I G E A S T W o m e n s B a s k e t b a l l R e p o r t Notre Dame Fighting Irish 18-1 Overall (9-1 Home; 5-0 Away; 4-0 Neutral) 7-0 BIG EAST (4-0 Home; 3-0 Away) Next game: No. 2/3 Notre Dame will take a break from conference action, playing at No. 9/9 Tennessee on Jan. 28 at 7 p.m. ET. The game will be televised on ESPN2. Last game: The No. 2/3 Fighting Irish defeated Providence at home on Jan. 26 for their 13th straight win. Notes Notre Dame s 13-game winning streak is the sixth longest in school history. The longest Irish win streak is 23 games set during the season, when the Irish won the national championship. Senior Skylar Diggins scored 21 points, all in the first half. Diggins took a pass from junior Kayla McBride on the opening tipoff to score a layup four seconds in, becoming the fourth Irish player to ever score 2,000 career points. Junior Natalie Achonwa had 14 points and 12 rebounds for the Irish and freshman Jewell Loyd added 10. The Irish outshot the Friars 51 percent to 31 percent, scoring 56 points in the paint. Notre Dame also had a rebounding advantage. Pittsburgh Panthers 9-10 Overall (7-5 Home; 2-5 Away; 0-0 Neutral) 0-6 BIG EAST (0-3 Home; 0-3 Away) Next game: Pitt remains on the road, playing at DePaul on Jan. 29 at 8 p.m. ET. The Blue Demons lead the BIG EAST regular season series 5-2. Last game: Pitt lost at Georgetown on Jan. 26. Notes Sophomore Brianna Kiesel led Pitt with 22 points and 10 boards. Junior Asia Logan tallied 19 points, 15 in the second half. Junior Marquel Davis chipped in a career-best 10 boards. Logan leads the team with 15.7 ppg and 7.4 rpg. The Panthers held the edge on the boards, outrebounding the Hoyas The Panthers used a 14-4 run to cut the deficit to 12 at with 5:05 showing. Logan closed the surge with a fast-break lay-up. For just the second time this season (in 19 games), Pitt failed to hold a lead. The loss was Pitt s sixth-straight. The Panthers rank 14th in the league in steals averaging just 6.9 per game. Providence Friars 6-13 Overall (4-5 Home; 0-7 Away; 2-1 Neutral) 1-5 BIG EAST (1-2 Home; 0-3 Away) Next game: Providence will return home to host St. John s on Jan. 30 at 7 p.m. ET. The Red Storm lead the BIG EAST regular season series Last game: Providence lost at No. 2/3 Notre Dame on Jan. 26. Notes Junior Danielle Pearson paced the Friars with seven points in the opening 20 minutes. In addition to shooting 52.5-percent (21-of-40) from the floor as a team, Notre Dame also held a commanding lead on the boards (29-13). Providence was limited to two offensive rebounds in the first half. Sophomore Tori Rule scored each of her teamhigh 12 points in the second half. She also added five rebounds, two assists and one steal in the game. Classmate Alexis Harris contributed eight points and five rebounds, while senior Brianna Edwards grabbed a team-high seven rebounds. Sophomore Evi Iiskola dished a career-high four assists for Providence. Rutgers Scarlet Knights 11-7 Overall (9-1 Home; 1-6 Away; 1-0 Neutral) 2-3 BIG EAST (2-1 Home; 0-2 Away) Next game: The Scarlet Knights will play at Seton Hall on Jan. 27 at 2 p.m. ET. RU leads the BIG EAST regular season series Last game: Rutgers picked up its second-straight BIG EAST victory with a win against Georgetown at home on Jan. 22. Notes The Scarlet Knights were led by freshman Kahleah Copper with 12 points and sophomore Shakena Richardson with 11 points. Georgetown s Sugar Rodgers, who entered the game as the nation s leading scorer at 24.6 points per game, was held to a season-low 13 points shooting 3-of-20 from the field. It was only the fourth time this season Rogers has scored under 20 points. With the Hoyas leading with five minutes remaining in the first half, Rutgers closed out the half on a 13-3 run holding Georgetown to only one field goal during the span. The Scarlet Knights went into the locker room with a edge at the break. The Scarlet Knights outrebounded the Hoyas, Senior Monique Oliver came off the bench to lead RU with eight rebounds. Eight different players scored for Rutgers. Cincinnati Connecticut Georgetown DePaul Louisville Marquette Notre Dame Pittsburgh St. John s Red Storm 9-8 Overall (6-3 Home; 2-3 Away; 1-2 Neutral) 3-2 BIG EAST (2-1 Home; 1-1 Away) Next game: St. John s will go on the road for two games, beginning at No. 13/12 Louisville on Jan. 28 at 1:30 p.m. ET. The game will be televised on ESPNU. The Cardinals lead the BIG EAST regular season series 4-3. Last game: The Red Storm lost at home to RV/22 Syracuse on a last-second half-court shot by freshman Brittney Sykes. The game was the third annual field trip day. There was a season-high attendance of 3,661. The attendance, however, was affected by the New York City school bus driver strike. Notes Senior Shenneika Smith led all scorers with 21 points, her sixth time scoring 20-points or more this season. Freshman Aliyyah Handford s 15 points marked the seventh time in 10 games the rookie scored in double figures. Senior Nadirah McKenith added 10 points, shooting 4-of-9 from the field. McKenith also tied her season best with eight assists. With 524 assists, she is seven shy of breaking St. John s all-time career assists record. St. John s held Syracuse to a season-low in scoring. Syracuse was averaging 77.7 points per game going into the game. Seton Hall Pirates 7-12 Overall (6-5 Home; 1-5 Away; 0-2 Neutral) 2-4 BIG EAST (1-2 Home; 1-2 Away) Next game: The Pirates wrap up a two-game homestand against Rutgers on Jan. 27 at 2 p.m. ET. Rutgers leads the all-time series 32-7, including a 17-4 edge in league games. The last time Seton Hall beat the Scarlet Knights was on Feb. 13, Last game: Seton Hall lost to USF at home on Jan. 22. Notes Freshman Tabatha Richardson-Smith had 15 points and shot 4-of-9 from the field. She also grabbed six rebounds in 20 minutes of action off the bench. Senior Brittany Morris had 15 points, including three 3-pointers. Redshirt-sophomore Ka-Deidre Simmons had just three points in 26 minutes. She shot 1-of-8 from the field. The Pirates trailed at halftime and shot 30-percent from the field for the game. Seton Hall ranks fourth in the league in free throw shooting at 72-percent having made 194-of-268 attempts. The Cardinals lead the BIG EAST regular season series 5-2. Last game: USF defeated Marquette at home on Jan. 26. Notes USF forced 23 turnovers and scored 20 of its points off turnovers while Marquette shot 32 percent from the field. MU had 23 turnovers. The Bulls continued to get good production from its younger players as freshman guard Courtney Williams scored 10 points and freshman forward Alisia Jenkins grabbed 11 rebounds. Student-athletes will wear the ribbons on their shooting shirts during warmups, while coaches and administrative personnel will wear the ribbons throughout their respective games. Huskies Lead Defensively In a win at Cincinnati on Jan. 26, the Huskies held the Bearcats to just three field goals in the first half and held a 41-9 lead at the intermission. UConn closed the half with a 24-1 run. The nine points were the fewest UConn has allowed in an opening half this season. UConn leads the nation in scoring defense allowing just 46.7 ppg. Syracuse at the Buzzer Freshman Brittney Sykes steal and half-court shot at the buzzer gave RV/22 Syracuse women s basketball a victory at St. John s on Jan. 23 at Carnesecca Arena. With the scored tied and St. John s inbounding on its offensive end of the court, Sykes stole the ball immediately after the inbounds pass from her former high school teammate Nadirah McKenith and shot from 50 feet, just ahead of the buzzer and banked it in for the incredible win. Sykes led the Orange with 16 points and seven rebounds. Notre Dame s Streaky Play The No. 2/3 Fighting Irish defeated Providence on Jan. 26 to extend its winning steak to 13 games, the sixth-longest in school history. In addition, the Irish have won their last 11 BIG EAST regular season road games, their best streak since joining the conference 18 seasons ago. Rutgers D Rutgers picked up its second-straight BIG EAST victory with a win against Georgetown at home on Jan. 22. Georgetown s Sugar Rodgers, who entered the game as the nation s leading scorer at 24.6 points per game, was held to a season-low 13 points shooting 3-of-20 from the field. It was only the fourth time this season Rogers has scored under 20 points. DePaul s Block Party NR/RV DePaul beat Cincinnati on Jan. 22. The Blue Demon defense recorded 12 blocks on the evening. Led by Freshman Megan Podkowa s five swats, DePaul s blocking performance is the third-best in school history. BIG EAST News & Notes Connecticut Knocks Off No. 4 Duke The No. 3/2 Huskies handed No. 4/4 Duke its first loss of the season with a victory at Gampel Pavilion on Jan. 21. The Blue Devils were the last unbeaten team in men s or women s Division I basketball. The last time the Blue Devils came up to Connecticut two years ago they were also unbeaten and the Huskies had one loss. UConn won that game Duke hadn t had a team come within single digits all season. Senior Kelly Faris led the Huskies with 18 points, 12 rebounds, and six assists. Wooden Award Midseason Top-20 Announced The John R. Wooden Award Midseason Top 20 was announced. The list is made up of 20 student-athletes who, based on their performances in November, December and January, are the frontrunners for selection to the National Ballot. The candidate classes will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, and those names will be placed on the official ballot. Seven Stars Named to Wade Watch List Seven BIG EAST women s basketball players have been named to the Wade Watch list for the State Farm Wade Trophy, as announced by the Women s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA). The prestigious award is presented annually to the NCAA Division I Player of the Year by the National Association of Girls and Women in Sport (NAGWS) and the WBCA. The BIG EAST placed seven players on the preseason list, followed by the Big Ten and Big 12 with five each, the ACC with three, the SEC with two, and the CAA, Ohio Valley and Pac-12 conferences with one each. A Close One In Marquette Louisville pulled out a close one at Marquette on Jan. 22. The Golden Eagles held a lead with 13 seconds remaining, but Louisville senior Monique Reid took the inbounds pass the length of the court for the Cards only fastbreak basket of the night and a lead with seven seconds remaining. The Cardinals held on for their fourth conference win of the year. Reid finished with nine points shooting 4-of-7, while junior Shoni Schimmel scored a game-high 19 points.
