As an alumnus and current Interim President, I am grateful to be a part of this journey with you. The mission of Morehouse College has always been clear to develop men with disciplined minds who will lead lives of leadership and service. It is my hope that you will answer this charge by pushing yourselves academically and intellectually, seeking experiences to strengthen your resolve as young men, pursuing opportunities to serve your communities, and serving as leaders among your peers. Your decisions today will shape your successes well beyond our campus. It is also my hope that your Morehouse experience will give you a deeper understanding of who you are and who you are called to be. In the words of Howard Thurman: Do not ask yourself what the world needs. Ask yourself what makes you come alive, and then go do that. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive. Today, more than ever, the world needs Morehouse Men to come alive! New Student Orientation is an invaluable part of your journey. You will learn about our 150-year history. You will learn about our most prominent alumni. You will learn our traditions. You will learn what it takes to be successful at Morehouse College. 5 It s my very great pleasure to welcome you to Morehouse College. Morehouse College is the only college in the world that was designed with YOU at the forefront of its creation. YOU are our raison d'être ; our reason or justification for existence! As we ve said in our recent strategic plan: [Morehouse] is like no other institution in the world. It is not just that we are all-male, or historically black, or that we assume the special responsibility for teaching the history and culture of black people. It is not only that we demand disciplined minds, leadership, and service along with liberal learning and the development of character. It is the combination of these strengths that multiplies our capacity to have an impact on the world and makes us extraordinarily unique. Morehouse provides a rigorous and broad-minded education providing you the opportunity to explore your ideas and curiosities while providing you skills that will help you make a good life. You do these things within an environment that is made for you to succeed. Morehouse is special because of the distinctiveness of the communities that create it. You are now adding your distinctiveness and special character to this collective that forms the foundation of the Morehouse Mystique. Having said all this, Morehouse and the Atlanta area can be a little overwhelming and sometimes confusing. So, you may feel a little unsure, a little hesitant, maybe a little nervousness all wrapped in a sense of anxious anticipation of what may be in store in the coming days, months, semesters and years. Rest assured that every member of this campus community is dedicated to your success. At Morehouse College, you have a staff that is dedicated to helping you make the most of your time and investment. My vocation is teaching sociology; but as College Provost, I am primarily concerned with helping you to succeed academically. I am responsible for oversight of the Core Curriculum, the majors and minors within the varied disciplines, research activities, and other programs intended to enrich intellectual life on campus, including advising and tutoring, and study abroad. An extraordinary group of people help me in this work. They are that group of all faculty and staff dedicated to your success at Morehouse. You will come to know your faculty and their research and scholarly pursuits by being in their classes. And, you should take every opportunity to interact and network with them. But, your learning does not stop when you leave the classroom. Everyone on the campus from the grounds staff to the president is an opportunity to learn and grow. And, they are committed to this goal for you. All I ask of you is that you be steadfast and unmovable in attaining the goal of graduating ON TIME and pursuing your dreams. So, you should study smart, play well, seek help from the right resources (and seek it quickly!), demand excellence and accountability from yourself and your brothers. Proverbs 4 tells us to seek wisdom and understanding; never walk away from Wisdom it is the guardian of your life. Best regards as you walk in your authority to succeed! Michael E. Hodge, Ph.D. Associate Vice President for Student Services, Dean of the College Office of the Provost Gloster Hall, Suite Westview Drive, SW, Atlanta, Georgia

Above all, we will continuously encourage you to forge habits of the mind that will enable you to make good choices, and to assume responsibility for actions that will lead to your success as a viable citizen of the world. In the words of Ursula K. LaGuin, It is good to have an end to journey toward; but it is the journey that matters in the end. Welcome to Morehouse College, a place where many a journey has changed the world! Alvin H. Darden 72 Dean of the First Year Experience & Freshman Class; Co-Chair, NSO Office of Student Life Sale Hall Annex, Room Westview Drive, SW, Atlanta, Georgia (O)

Take advantage of this time and plan to do your very best. The experiences during your matriculation will shape you in unimaginable ways and remain with you for the rest of your life. As you navigate this journey remember the cause and effect of each decision you make, so make decisions wisely. As you make mistakes, own up and learn from them. There will be many obstacles ahead as you aspire to earn your degree. And as those obstacles arise, know and use the abundant resources that are available to you. Don t be afraid to ask for help! No one completes this process alone; we work together here. The mission of this beloved institution is to develop men with disciplined minds who will lead lives of leadership and service. Look to your upperclassmen brothers who serve as members of the SGA, CASA, NSOL, Resident Assistants and fraternities. They are examples of students working toward that mission. Find your place and get involved. Your future starts today. Welcome to the House! Sincerely, Kevin R. Booker 90 Associate Dean of the College for Student Life; Co-Chair, NSO Office of Student Life Kilgore Student Center, Suite Westview Drive, SW, Atlanta, Georgia (O) (F)

The most integral part of this process happens during NSO as you make your transition from admitted student to a Man of Morehouse. You are entering sacred grounds, a place where all of your dreams those that you have dreamt about and those that you have not yet imagined can be fostered. From internships on Wall Street, study abroad opportunities in Costa Rica, or civic engagement in the West End community, Morehouse College can expose you to it all. But know this before you begin your journey: Morehouse will expect the highest form of personhood from you, requiring you to make a commitment to something that is far beyond you. 11 MOREHOUSE COLLEGE SESQUICENTENNIAL CELEBRATION The year 2017 is a special one as Morehouse College as we celebrate a 150-year history of educating and developing global leaders. In that century and a half, Dear Old Morehouse College has produced thousands of men who have contributed to world society in every way imaginable. The Morehouse legacy is a global story about men who for 150 years have charted and changed the course of history. We are proud and privileged to be part of this moment in the College s history and look forward to continuing to commemorate Morehouse College throughout this Sesquicentennial Celebration. MISSION The mission of Morehouse College is to develop men with disciplined minds, men who will lead lives of leadership and service. A private historically black liberal arts college for men, Morehouse realizes this mission by emphasizing the intellectual and character development of its students. In addition, the College assumes special responsibility for teaching the history and culture of black people. Founded in 1867 and located in Atlanta, Georgia, Morehouse is an academic community dedicated to teaching, scholarship, and service, and the continuing search for truth as a liberating force. As such, the College offers instructional programs in three divisions business and economics, humanities, and social sciences, as well as science and mathematics including extracurricular activities that: develop skills in oral and written communications, analytical and critical thinking, and interpersonal relationships; and foster an understanding and appreciation of world cultures, artistic and creative expression, and the nature of the physical universe.

12 Founded in 1867 in the basement of Springfield Baptist Church in Augusta, GA., by the Rev. William Jefferson White, with the encouragement of former slave the Rev. Richard C. Coulter and the Rev. Edmund Turney of the National Theological Institute, Morehouse College has had a 150-year legacy of producing educated men and global leaders. Starting as Augusta Institute under the first president, Joseph T. Robert, the institution was created to educate black men for careers in ministry and teaching. At the urging of the Rev. Frank Quarles, the school moved to Atlanta s Friendship Baptist Church in 1879 and changed its named to the Atlanta Baptist Seminary. The Seminary moved to downtown Atlanta, and then soon after to a former Civil War battleground site in Atlanta s West End under President Samuel Graves in By 1897 under President George Sale, the institution became Atlanta Baptist College. Atlanta Baptist College expanded its curriculum and established a tradition of educating leaders for all American life. During the tenure of the College s first African American president, John Hope, the College was re-named Morehouse College in 1913, in honor of Henry L. Morehouse, the corresponding secretary of the National Baptist Home Mission Society. Samuel Archer lead the College as president during the Great Depression, giving the College s its adopted colors of maroon and white. Beginning in the 1940s, the College s international reputation in scholarship, leadership and service began to flourish, particularly as then-president Benjamin E. Mays oversaw the increase of faculty members with doctoral degrees, accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, and the establishment of a Phi Beta Kappa chapter. Under President Hugh M. Gloster, the first alumnus to serve as president, the College expanded its endowment to more than $29 million, completed a $20-million fund-raising campaign and added 12 new campus buildings. The Morehouse School of Medicine was founded during this time, becoming independent in During the administration of eighth president, Dr. Leroy Keith Jr., the College s endowment increased to more than $60 million, with faculty salaries and student scholarships also increasing. Buildings such as the Nabrit-Mapp-McBay Hall and the Thomas Kilgore Jr. Campus Center were constructed and the College produced its first Rhodes Scholar, Nima A. Warfield. The College s A Candle in the Dark Gala was founded in 1989 to raise scholarship funds during this time. Ninth president Dr. Walter E. Massey ushered in a 21-century approach to learning, as his vision was for the College to become the nation s best liberal arts college. Morehouse expanded its dual-degree program in natural sciences; launched the Center for Excellence in Science, Engineering and Mathematics; established a new African American studies program; and a Center for International Studies named for former United Nations Ambassador Andrew Young. The Davidson House Center for Excellence, the president s official residence and a mini-conference center, was constructed during this time, aswas The Leadership Center; the John H. Hopps Technology Tower. Two more students became Rhodes Scholars: Chris Elders in 2002 and Oluwabusayo Tope Folarin in 2004.

13 By June 2006, the College successfully completed its most ambition capital campaign, raising a record $112 million, exceeding the Campaign s goal of $105 million. The same year, Morehouse became the custodian of the Morehouse College Martin Luther King Jr. Collection, more than 13,000 hand-written notes, sermons, letters, books and other artifacts belonging to King, the College s most noted alumnus. Dr. Robert M. Franklin Jr. became president in 2007 and led the institution forward with his vision of the Morehouse Renaissance, further elevating public confidence in the College s stature as a premier institution providing quality education and enhancing institution s intellectual and moral dimension. He accomplished this in part by establishing the Five Wells, which was about developing men of Morehouse with social conscience and global perspective who were well-read, well-spoken, well-traveled, well-dressed, and well-balanced. Franklin oversaw the completion of a $20-million project started by Massey, the Ray Charles Performing Arts Center and Music Academic Building, a facility named after the late legendary musician. He also led cultivation efforts that increased the total number of new donors at the College by 4,500. The College generated more than $68 million in institutional funds and $60 million in restricted funds from federal sources, including Congressional appropriations and competitive federal grants. In 2013, Dr. John Silvanus Wilson Jr. was named the College s 11 th president. He and his team were champions of STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) initiatives and significantly increased the College s private gifts, grants and contracts. During his tenure, computer science major Prince Abudu became the College s fourth Rhodes Scholar. Wilson played a pivotal role in bringing President Barack Obama to Morehouse as the 2013 Commencement speaker and in hosting Vice President Joseph Biden in William James Taggart assumed the role of interim president of the College in 2017 after serving as chief operating officer since A results-driven leader in the private and public sectors, Taggart had more than 30 years of experience with Fortune 500 companies, higher education, and federal agencies. Tragically, just two months after his appointment, Taggart suddenly passed away in June Harold Martin Jr., was appointed interim president in June 2017, becoming the youngest person to lead the College since The former board secretary for the Morehouse College Board of Trustees, Martin will head the College until a permanent president is chosen. Martin has an extensive background in advising senior executives at higher education institutions and Fortune 500 companies. A summa cum laude graduate and a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Martin is a graduate of the Yale Law School. He was associate partner at McKinsey & Company, an international management consulting firm where he helped academic institutions solve complex strategic, financial, and organizational challenges. He led the firm s Higher Education Practice which studied higher education trends and best practices by leading colleges and universities. Since leaving the firm in 2014, Martin has built a successful, independent consulting practice and private investment firm. Martin is building on the momentum started by Taggart in working with Morehouse s Board, students, parents, faculty, staff, alumni and donors to solidify the College s position as an academic leader and to expand giving at the College. His leadership allows Morehouse to continue its long and unique history of developing men with disciplined minds who lead lives of leadership and service to students now representing 35states and 17 countries.

22 NOWLEDGE MPOWERS OU 7 Habits of Highly Responsible Students THEY SET GOALS. Goals keep students focused on the future. Goals help students focus on what s important and what s not. If you have a vision of where you want to go, you re more likely to get there. Students with goals find it easier to say no to irresponsible behaviors, because they are saying yes to their vision of the future. THEY PLAN THEIR TIME. Responsible people meet their obligations, whether it s turning in a paper on the day it s due or having a report on the boss s desk when it s needed. It takes planning. (If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.) Use a digital or big calendar to help organize your time. Write down all your commitments and use the calendar to plan time for homework and study each day. THEY STUDY EVERY DAY. Responsible students set aside time for homework or studying every day. If there is no homework that day, review your class notes, or research additional material in preparation for an upcoming exam. READ! READ! READ! THEY HAVE THE TOOLS THEY NEED. A carpenter wouldn t think of showing up without a hammer. A nurse always has a stethoscope. A responsible student is always properly prepared for class. THEY TAKE NOTES IN CLASS. Teachers will almost always spell out what they think is important. Taking notes while the teacher is talking is a MUST. THEY KEEP THEIR COMMITMENTS. Responsible people honor their commitments. They succeed in school by doing their assignments well and on time; they do their share of the group project. Set realistic and attainable commitments to yourself and others and feel the satisfaction that comes from meeting those commitments. THEY GET READY AHEAD OF TIME. Some students start out every morning with a crisis. Yes things happen! But responsible students have learned that being late, or being early, is not something that simply happens; it is a choice they make. Take 5 or 10 minutes before bedtime to get ready for the next day. Pack the bag appropriately. Lay out clothes. SET YOUR ALARM! You will soon see that those few minutes will make 22 the mornings easier, and help get you to class on time, ready to learn.
