2 2008 MEN S LACROSSE CHAMPIONSHIP Dan Loftus had 17 saves to fend off a late Virginia rally and senior Matt Danowski added three goals and an assist to lead the Blue Devils to a 11-9 Sunday afternoon to claim the 2008 Atlantic Coast Conference Men s Lacrosse Championship at Klockner Stadium in Charlottesville, Va. The title is the fifth overall (1995, 2001, 2002, 2007, 2008) for the Blue Devils and their second consecutive. Duke, ranked No. 2 in the latest USILA poll, improves to 15-1 on the year with the win, while Virginia slips to 12-3 overall. Virginia did a great job today, said Duke head coach John Danowski. They outshot us and I thought that they actually outplayed us in the second half. But we had built a big enough lead that they couldn t catch up. If the game was 65 or 66 minutes, who knows Virginia could have won today. Virginia s Ben Rubeor and Brian Carroll both finished with a game-high three goals, while Danowski tallied three for Duke. Cav s Garrett Billings had a game-high three assists on the night. In the cage for the Blue Devils was Loftus, who earned 2008 All-Tournament Most Valuable Player nods after recording 17 saves in all 60 minutes of action.
