In tat tradition, Aquinas College of Nasville, Tenn., plans to tie its expansion in enrollment and academic programming wit its first residences and a ouse system, were students will join togeter wit staff and faculty in spiritual and social communities. We want our students to experience te joy of just being togeter, explained Sister Mary Sara Galbrait, Aquinas president. Aquinas College is run by te Dominican Sisters of St. Cecilia, an order tat still wears teir traditional abit and remains faitful to te teacings of te Curc. Like many oter faitful orders, tey are growing, wit 20 new postulants arriving at te Nasville moterouse annually; tey now number about 265. Teir average age is te mid-30s. Sister Mary Sara erself attended Aquinas in its formative years, in te early 1960s, wen it trained bot nurses and sisters to teac in Catolic scools across America (and now Canada and Australia). Wile working on er doctorate in istory at te University of Sydney, se learned about te ouse system. Wen te order brougt er back to Aquinas College, already in te midst of planning its expansion, se proposed te ouse system as an option for bot te students wo commute daily from Nasville and surrounding communities and tose, starting next year, wo will reside on campus. Communities, Not Buildings As te idea developed, it became clear tat tying te idea to pysical buildings, as at Oxford, would bot delay a good idea needed now and limit te number of ouses to tree very big ones. So te ouses will not be buildings, but eigt communities. Eac student will be assigned to one for is or er entire four-year stint. Courtesy of Paul Duda Canging te Culture for Crist, 1 Film at a Time Jon Paul te Great University Students Put Morality in Movies by Josep pronecen Tere s nowere to run in space. A sci-fi triller sort film exploring te consequences of our coices. Tat s te teaser promoting Project Callisto (ProjectCallisto. com), a movie under way using te talents of aspiring filmmakers at Jon Paul te Great Catolic University in San Diego. Te film is te senior project for Paul Duda from Manassas, Va., wo is studying movie directing and production. Duda and is crew of more tan 20 fellow students ave entered te pre-production pase. Duda just finised raising te minimum $5,000 necessary for filming, wic begins at te scool tis fall quarter. Professional actors from Los Angeles will be ired. Duda describes two of te goals beind te project: We re attempting to promote Cristian truts troug te temes, and we re looking to break into te industry to actually make a difference. Te ultimate goal for imself and te crew is to get into te filmmaking industry and tell Catolic and Cristian truts in a way tat s marketable to everybody. Duda points out tat tis project is not an explicitly Catolic film, but it does focus on and address a universal trut: ow pride as consequences and is ultimately self-destructive. Obviously, tat s someting everybody can relate to, Catolic or not, e says. Tey can see ow pride can be a destructive force in teir lives. Te movie centers on te female captain of a spacesip wo tinks se can take care of everyting erself. Her pride gets er into a situation se can t get out of on er own, and te story poses te question: Will er pride lead to er demise? Duda explains wy e approaced te subject tis way: One of te main reasons we went wit a more universal trut is because it s our first major production. We wanted someting tat upolds our moral standards and at te same time doesn t pigeonole our careers and doesn t not allow us to work in Hollywood. Tis is an approac te college encourages, Duda says: to try to make films and tell stories tat are marketable so we re not just sitting on te outskirts and making tese films for Catolics only. In te words of te university s mission and core purpose, te scool works to impact our culture for Crist by forming creators and innovators, leaders and entrepreneurs at te intersections of communications media, business and teology, guided by te spiritual, moral and social teacings of Jesus Crist. Nick van Liesout, te scriptwriter and assistant director, is a junior majoring in film production and directing. He is looking forward to directing projects after graduation and to go werever God takes me. Te film s co-producer, McKenna Daniel, is an MBA graduate student wit a concentration in producing. At Benedictine College in Atcison, Kan., as an undergraduate, se studied mass communications and pilosopy. After graduation, se worked for a year wit Heroic Media, a fait-based prolife organization tat uses media to present ope-filled alternatives to abortion and tus build a culture of life. Because Hollywood is (potentially) te biggest megapone for our fait and witness worldwide, se decided to study at Jon Paul te Great. It s important to tell stories wit real eroes, Daniel believes. People in te movie teater can identify wit caracters and teir virtues, and tat s were people come away wit an impact on teir life. Dominic Iocco is te supervising professor and executive producer of te film. Iocco serves as Jon Paul te Great s provost. He teaces students tat audiences relate to movies in different ways, depending on approac. People came out asking temselves a simple question, e says of te animated film Finding Nemo. Am I a good dad? Tat, to me, is as effective as it could be for a paying audience. On te oter side, if Te Passion of te Crist came out every year tat scale, tat impact, tat well done tat would be a great ting, e adds. But tat s still only two ours out of everybody s life te entire year. We ad Te Passion and te wole world isn t converting because of tat movie. Tat s were Cristians get into trouble. We want to make a movie tat gets everybody to convert instantly. Iocco believes tat, ideally, a film sould present someting true and beautiful, sow people wat te trut is, and let trut stand for itself. Ten audience members own questioning can lead tem to conversion. Te job of te media is not to convert tem, but to start tem on tat process to seek te trut, e says. Tat s te great asset te movies can be. Tat approac seems to be wat Duda is after: to make movies tat entertain but also provoke tougt via strong moral temes. Te culture of Hollywood (is someting) many people see as depraved, e says, but to be Crist s ligt in tat darkness I would like to do tat. Josep Pronecen is te Register s staff writer. Catolic Distance University is unique among institutions of iger learning. Founded in 1983 as te first catecetical institute in te United States to award te catecetical diploma and teac te Catolic fait toug distance education, it offers courses in print format and online. It makes suc perfect sense, says Marianne Evans Mount, CDU s president. Wen our Holy Fater specifically mentions tecnology as being part of te New Evangelization, wy not a university tat delivers very solid and inspiring education to te Curc and te world? In just one course taugt by Fater Bevil Bramwell of te Oblates of Mary Immaculate, wo is CDU s undergraduate dean and caplain, tere were students from Sout Africa, Hong Kong and Bagdad, as well as military personnel in Iraq and Afganistan. Courses focus on teacings of sacred Scripture, te living tradition of te Curc, te magisterium, wit an empasis on te Catecism and te documents of Vatican II. In some places, you are completely isolated; tere s no place to go to get a degree in Catolic teology, Branly says. One of te strengts (wit CDU) is you can go to class no matter were you are at, any time of te day. Se as found great benefit in being able to review lectures again; se also as ample time to tink about answers before responding to a question from te professor or an observation from a fellow student. For weekly lectures, tere are PowerPoint presentations. Tey can be read, plus te narration is often delivered as an MP3 file to download and listen to as many times as students need to. Te convenience is a plus, but te quality is wat matters to te students. Te content of te courses is penomenal, Branly says. Every course is grounded in te magisterium and te Curc documents. You were constantly being referred back to te Catecism, and you were reading encyclicals, documents of Vatican II and te early Curc Faters. We re aware of te enormous treasure Catolicism is, Fater Branwell notes, and we re trying to put it in a complete form on te Web. Deacon Peter Flatley is grateful for te opportunity to learn more about is fait. He is retired as a colonel after 24 years in te Marines. Having settled on te Olympic Peninsula on Wasington s Pacific coast, I still felt a need to know more about my fait, recalls te deacon, wo as always been a practicing Catolic and attended Catolic institutions. But te closest Catolic college was 2 1/2 ours from im and didn t ave te ortodoxy I searced for, e says. Ten e found te perfect matc in CDU. Te good Lord in is divine Providence was putting everyting on te table and said: How can you resist? Here it is rigt now, Flatley recalls. I wanted to know te fait for myself and make sure if I was going to represent te Curc to anyone else, I was going to represent it accurately. St. Jerome said, Ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Crist. I would say: Ignorance of te Catecism is ignorance of te Curc. From tat point on, I felt more confidence presenting and talking about te fait. He earned a master s degree, and e found someting else te deaconate. Te Lord enligtened me one step at a time, e says. Te more you learn of te fait, te more you love te fait. As President Mount adds, CDU 100% ands on te teacings of te Curc. At CDU, tey are going to get te trut. Tere is yet anoter strong partnersip tat is about to expand between CDU and EWTN. We go way back, says Mount. Te collaboration began years ago, wen CDU offered only printed correspondence courses. But because people enjoy watcing EWTN, te Register s parent company, te scool considered: Wy not give tem te opportunity to take a course based on content on EWTN? Mount recalls. Tat was someting we tougt was a great idea. Wit sows suc as Fater C. Jon McCloskey s series on Cardinal Jon Henry Newman, te scool and te TV network became partners in education as EWTN programming was incorporated into CDU s curriculum. Tis year te CDU Presents series is now broadcast weekly on EWTN Radio. Also tis year, EWTN s president and CEO and te Register s publiser, Micael Warsaw, was named to CDU s board of directors. Now we re exploring anoter possible way of using courses tat were developed, Mount says. One avenue is to ave EWTN programs available online. We tink EWTN is a great veicle for education, says Mount. By partnering wit tem, we can bring te ricness of te TV programming, wit te wonderful video programming from EWTN, and marry tat wit te wonderful systematic university education tat CDU offers. 10 Nat iona l Cat ol ic R egist er, sep t em ber 9, C10 D2 Rams Quarterback Lives for Crist Including in College Kellen Clemens Looks Beyond Football for His Deepest Identity by t R e n t b e at t i e k ellen Clemens as been playing football as far back as e can remember. After learning te game from is fater on teir cattle ranc, e went on to set igscool records. At te University of Oregon, e set single-season passing records and ended is collegiate career as te scool s No. 3 man in bot passing yards and toucdowns. After being cosen in te second round of te 2006 NFL draft, Clemens as served as a backup quarterback for te New York Jets, Wasington Redskins and Houston Texans. He is in tat same position wit te St. Louis Rams for te 2012 season. Clemens explains tat te sport is someting e does, wile being Catolic is wo e is. How did you start playing football? My dad played in ig scool as a quarterback, and ten as a defensive back at Portland State. I learned all about football from im on our cattle ranc in souteastern Oregon. However, we didn t ave a Pop Warner League were I m from, so instead of playing on organized teams, I d play at recess wit my friends on te playground. Ten, in sevent grade, we jumped rigt into playing wit pads playing for real, you could say. I ve been playing real football ever since sevent grade. Wat are some of your top football memories? Playing football in ig scool was a lot of fun because I was at a small scool. Tat made it possible to play wit te same group of guys for four consecutive years. Eac year a class would graduate, and a new one would come in; but as far as my own class, we got to play togeter te wole way troug. Tat s far less likely to occur at a larger scool, were a class can be divided up among different-level teams, and ten one year someone migt get cut. At a small scool suc as te one I attended, it s more like a family of broters. We would practice, play games and even do off-season workouts togeter. We just enjoyed being around eac oter. Tat s someting tat matters more tan te actual game itself: te camaraderie formed among te guys. If you talk wit retired players about wat tey miss from teir playing days, tey ll tell you tey miss te teams tey were on and te relationsips tey formed, rater tan winloss records or awards. Te satisfaction of awards doesn t last. Tropies end up collecting dust, but te satisfaction of te relationsips does last. Wat is most difficult about playing professional football? Te fact tat it s a business. It s not te same as playing in ig scool, were you ave a family type of atmospere and coesion tat endures for a long period of time. Wile it still is possible to form lasting relationsips, it s more of a callenge. You can get cut or traded very quickly, so tere s less time to bond. You ave to mentally separate te game from te business aspect. On te one and, you enjoy te game, but on te oter and, you realize tere s te constant pressure to perform wit perfection. So many eyes are on you, and everyting you do is analyzed. Tere are certain expectations of you, and tis is due in part to te fact tat a lot of money canges ands between te fans and te owners, and ten between te owners and te players. Did you grow up in a devout family? I m a cradle Catolic, wit four sisters, and te fait was always an integral part of our lives. I went to confession, received oly Communion and was confirmed. We were taugt te difference between rigt 3:00 PM Messages 100% Dante Edit So excited! Just got accepted to te College of St. Mary Magdalen!! Nice! Are tey academically serious? Did Socrates wear a toga? Wo s Socrates? You know, I tink tey re still accepting applications... TeaM potograper NeWMaN lowrance and wrong and enjoyed te stability tat brings. We also benefited from being so close to nature on our family s cattle ranc. Tat encourages you to be umble and also to respect and work wit God s creation. Ten I left my small souteastern Oregon town of Burns to attend te University of Oregon in Eugene, wic is te second-largest city in te state. Tat was a big transition period, were I left almost everyting I ad previously known. Tere was a void tat needed to be filled, and it became very clear tat I ad a decision to make: I could eiter drop te fait and pursue oter tings, or I could lay claim to it and become te man God wants me to be. It would ave been easy to decide in favor of te first coice, because you don t ave your parents telling you wen to go to Mass. You re on your own and ave to make your own decisions about wat you ll pursue. Tat can be a callenge because tere are tings in college wic seem like fun on te surface but aren t in armony wit te dignity of te uman person and don t provide lasting appiness. I knew tat my relationsip wit Jesus Crist was more important tan anyting else in college. I made a conscious effort to deepen tat relationsip, in part by attending daily Mass. I really started to take te fait as my own, rater tan simply relying on oters to keep it going. Tat was a key time in my life, and I look back wit gratitude for te grace God gave me to make te rigt decision. Everyting else flows from tat decision of ow you respond to God s call. I knew being Catolic was important, but wat I ve come to realize more deeply since college is tat being Catolic means everyting to me. It s wat I am in my very essence. Football is someting I do, but being Catolic is wo I am. I m Catolic in my bones, in my blood owever you want to say it. Tat is a great way to describe it Catolic by blood since Jesus gives us is body and blood in every Mass we attend. One of my favorite passages in te Bible is from Jon 6: Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat te fles of te Son of man and drink is blood, you ave no life in you. He wo eats my fles and drinks my blood as eternal life, and I will raise im up on te last day. Jesus wants us to be completely united to im forever, and tis unity begins ere on eart, primarily troug te oly Eucarist. I like to expand my knowledge of te Mass, so one of te most recent books I ve read is 7 Secrets of te Eucarist by Vinny Flynn. Te first capter is about ow te Eucarist is alive. In oter words, te Eucarist is not just a symbol, but te very Person of Jesus Crist. Wen you get to know tat better, it really canges ow you see Mass and ow you receive Jesus in oly Communion. Oter tan your collegiate years, are tere specific times tat come to mind wen reflecting on your Catolic fait? Tere are so many good tings to tink about, but te first one tat comes to mind is from April of My wife, my daugter (wo was only 6 weeks old at te time) and I ad te onor of being at Pope Benedict s Mass in Wasington, D.C. We even got to sit rigt next to te aisle were e would be processing. On is way out after te Mass, Pope Benedict stopped and kissed our daugter, and e traced te sign of te cross on er foreead. Tat was a very special moment we ll always remember. Wat do you enjoy most about family life? I really enjoy being married. It s exactly wat I tougt of te sacrament as being wen I was younger. Academically Excellent Passionately Catolic T wo tings attracted me to Franciscan. First, te passionately Catolic atmospere and community: Te people ere are trying to be saints, and tat s an incredible ting to be a part of. Second, I knew Franciscan could elp me realize my dream of becoming a doctor. Te biology and cemistry programs are incredibly callenging. I ve ad to die to myself in order to meet te rigorous demands of te program. It s more tan wort it toug. On top of te coursework, I m also getting te cance to do researc wit my professors as part of te Franciscan Institute for World Healt. For me, tat researc includes an internsip at Abbott Laboratories in Cicago, were I get to work alongside a team doing Neglected Diseases researc. Tat s an opportunity few students from anywere get because internsips in te parmaceutical industry are so competitive. Wat really sets te sciences at Franciscan apart, owever, is tat God doesn t get left out of te classroom. I ve come to understand more fully wy I believe wat I believe, and I ve learned ow to stand firm in tat. For Catolics wo want to be doctors in tis day and age, tat s essential. Matt Home State: Illinois Major: Biology Know te Trut. Love te Fait. Transform te World. Te College of Saint Mary Magdalen magdalen.edu www. franciscan. edu Admits qualified students of any race, color, national and etnic origin, disability, and sex. Sometimes you can look aead in life and ten te reality can be a lot different from wat you expected, but wit marriage, it is exactly as good as I tougt it would be. Te Holy Family is our model, as far as ow to live our lives. Tat s really raising te bar, because Jesus, Mary and Josep are te ultimate in ow a family sould function. Te Holy Family is an image of te Trinity, wit Josep in te role of God te Fater, Mary in te role of te Holy Spirit, and Jesus actually being te Son. Tis is a beautiful ting to tink about and attempt to pattern your own family after. It s striving for tat perfect interaction of te Trinity. Tere s a lot of pressure in te business of football, so wen you come ome to your family, it s quite a relief. My kids (we now ave a son and a baby on te way) accept me unconditionally. Tey don t care ow well or badly I played tat day, or if I played at all. Tey just want a ug and to be told tey re loved. Family life puts te business of football in te proper perspective, in large part because of te simplicity of kids. We gave our son Micael as a middle name, after St. Micael te Arcangel. I ve always been appreciative of St. Micael s protective role in driving out Satan. Tat protection is someting I wanted to pass on to my firstborn son, so tat if anyting appens to me, e can be te guardian of te ome. I also appreciate St. Sebastian s patronage for atletes and Our Lady of Mount Carmel s patronage of te wole Curc. I wear a brown scapular in order to connect to tat patronage. Tis is an election year, so ow are you voting? You ave to vote for te candidate wo is most pro-life. Tat s te fundamental issue tat underlies everyting else. Witout life, tere are no oter issues to discuss. Some people say tat oter issues are just as important as being pro-life. Being for te poor is mentioned as one of tem. Well, wo is more poor tan a baby? Wo as less power to care for imself? Obviously, being pro-life is being for te poor. Trent Beattie writes from Seattle.

11 NatioNal CatoliC RegisteR, september 9, 2012 C11 D3 Bringing St. Augustine To te Big Screen Catolic Publiser Promotes Sponsored Screenings JOHN PAUL c a t o l i c u n i v e r s i t y by tim d R a K e ARLINGTON, Texas Te first feature-lengt motion picture on te life of St. Augustine ad its official U.S. premiere in Texas recently. Te official premiere of Restless Heart: Te Confessions of Augustine (RestlessHeartFilm. com) took place Aug. 29 at te Catolic Marketing Network Trade Sow, wic was eld in Arlington, Texas. Restless Heart, originally titled St. Augustine, was directed by award-winning Canadian director Cristian Duguay and was coproduced by Italian, German and Polis production companies. It originally aired as a two-part television program in Italy in American Catolic publiser Ignatius Press as repackaged te film and will not only be distributing te DVD in Nort America, but as also developed a program tat allows parises, organizations and individuals to bring te film to teaters in teir locale. For te past few years, Ignatius Press as worked wit European production companies to secure Nort American licenses to release saint films on DVD. Wen te company eard tat a film was being made about St. Augustine, it expressed interest in obtaining te Nort American rigts. We are trilled to bring Restless Heart to te big screen, said Mark Brumley, president of Ignatius Press. St. Augustine is one of te first doctors of te Curc. His story is inspiring and compelling, and is writings are among te most respected in te world, even today. We re doing tis on a bigger level because we understand te importance of films for impacting te culture in modern society and te importance of evangelizing troug te film medium, said Antony Ryan, director of marketing wit Ignatius Press. We decided tat if we were ever going to try to get tese films in teaters, tis was te perfect movie to do it wit. Te film draws largely from te Confessions of St. Augustine to tell is story. Unlike many saint films, it does not sy away from telling about is less-tan-saintly early life and is conflicts wit is moter, St. Monica. Born in Nort Africa, St. Augustine led a edonistic lifestyle and ignored te advice of is Cristian moter before is conversion and baptism in Milan, Italy, at te age of 33. His Confessions and te City of God are two of te Curc s great spiritual classics. Augustine was declared one of te first doctors of te Curc by Pope Boniface VIII in Te film as drawn praise from many wo ave seen it. Tis film brings te words of te Confessions to life by enabling us to more fully understand te relationsips and te culture tat saped Augustine and to better grasp is talents and ambitions, sins and struggles and, ultimately, is sanctity, said Cardinal Francis George, arcbisop of Cicago. Restless Heart draws us to appreciate te magnitude and te totality of Augustine s conversion of mind and eart. As te life and times of tis saint for all ages are beautifully re-created before our eyes, we understand better tan ever te danger of being in love wit love, te insatiable void of a life defined by secular pursuits, said Bisop Felipe Estévez of St. Augustine, Fla. Appealing to te restless eart in eac of us, tis film of fait and ope is sure to become a spiritual classic. Pope Benedict XVI saw a sortened version of te treeour film in September He praised te film for its depiction of man s searc for trut. Tis (is) te great ope tat it ends wit: We cannot find trut by ourselves, but te Trut, wic is a person (Crist), finds us, said Pope Benedict. We ope tat many wo watc tis inspiring uman drama will allow temselves to be found by te Trut and in return also find Love. As a young priest in 1953, te Pope wrote is doctoral tesis on St. Augustine s teacings, and is first papal encyclical Deus Caritas Est (God Is Love) owes muc to te tougt of St. Augustine. St. Augustine s message as remained, and, even as te world canges, tat message lives on because it is based on trut and guides carity, wic is our common destiny, said te Pope. According to Victor Pap, vice president of marketing and outreac wit te Maximus Group, a public-relations firm elping Ignatius promote te film, tere is widespread interest in te movie. Denver s Augustine Institute, a graduate scool for Scripture and teology, organized a screening on te feast of St. Augustine, Aug. 28. Te director was first inspired to make tis film because te Holy Fater ad lamented tat no one ad taken te really interiorly great people of istory and made films of teir lives, explained Tim Gray, president of te Augustine Institute. We wanted to ost a sowing because we re an institute for evangelization, and Augustine is our model. Said Ignatius Ryan, Tis is a tremendous opportunity to launc te Year of Fait and engage in te New Evangelization. Tim Drake is te Register s senior writer.
