11 XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Angela Miyanda, a moter to undreds of orpaned and destitute cildren for 20 years Kabwata was a special project for Angela to oversee wile Second Lady and 20 years later, it as stood te test of time. In 2015, Angela was named te Country Winner from Zambia by Sout Africa s CEO Magazine in its issue of Africa s Most Influential Women in Business and Government. Angela Miyanda, founder and director of te Kabwata Orpanage and Transit Centre in Zambia, is our second-longest serving partner. It was in 1998, just one year after te incorporation of Bread and Water for Africa, tat we joined forces to provide loving omes for orpans in te AIDS-ravaged country. Angela was te Second Lady of Zambia wose usband, Brigadier General Godfrey Miyanda, served for seven years as vice president of te country. In er role, se encountered te tragic realities of te HIV/ AIDS crisis on a daily basis. Despite being te moter of four and a politician s wife, Angela says se knew God ad given er a iger calling because se found it impossible to stop worrying about all te orpans wo lost teir parents to te illness. I founded te Kabwata Transit Centre in response to te pligt of cildren orpaned by HIV/AIDS, Angela told us. Quickly, owever, tat mission grew to include Lusaka s orpaned street cildren, many also victims of HIV/AIDS. At te time, Angela reported tat by many estimates, Zambia as te igest proportion of orpaned cildren in te world, primarily due to HIV/AIDS. Te enormity of our HIV/ AIDS crisis as stretced Zambia s social fabric to te breaking point, se said. It became obvious tat we needed to address root causes of te HIV/AIDS epidemic and also te needs of local communities, se said, noting tat working wit community leaders 18 Angela Miyanda, former Second Lady of Zambia, visiting BWA office in BWA s founder Mr. Gene Krizek is on te rigt. and volunteers te Transit Centre s operations quickly expanded. Angela also explained tat tere is no formal, legal adoption process in Zambia, and orpans are traditionally absorbed into teir larger extended families. Altoug Kabwata was not intended to become a permanent ome, instead focusing on community-based foster care and supporting cildren from pre-scool troug grammar scool, many of te orpans ad nowere else to go. Te need for an orpanage became clear, and in 1999 Bread and Water for Africa provided Angela wit te financial resources se needed to build an actual orpanage. Angela received te award in te Welfare & Civil Society Organizations category, wic recognizes tose wo are very active in te field and ave acquired an in-dept knowledge of cildren s rigts, enabling tem to make considerable contributions towards improving te lives of cildren. Te FY 2017 was a year of reflection. Te program tat started in 1997 reaced 20 years of its existence. As we reflect on te goodness of our partners, we see te deliberate support of BWA from far back as Your kindness as made us acieve. - Angela Miyanda, Founder and Executive Director of Kabwata Orpanage and Transit Centre Te African Union notes tat it is civil society organizations, suc as Kabwata, wic work wit cildren in Africa and ave unrivaled knowledge and experience of teir situation, wic makes tem indispensable. Teir efforts are critical to te sustenance of a morally uprigt and equal continent, te CEO magazine noted in presenting te award to Angela and recipients from oter African countries. Tis past summer, te Daily Mail of Zambia reported Kabwata Orpanage: Many successes 20 years later noting tat in te past 20 years, 563 cildren ave passed troug and teir lives and ave benefited from Kabwata. Te orpanage was born out of Mrs. Miyanda s compassion for cildren wo were left beind by parents wo died of AIDS and related illnesses, te article states, adding tat wen Angela opened HIV and AIDS was at its peak and it was at tat time se decided to create a selter for suc cildren. And, to date, cildren orpaned by te AIDS epidemic still make up te largest number of tose wo ave gone troug Kabwata. Angela sadly notes tat in its 20 years of existence tey ave lost 13 cildren, mostly due to HIV and AIDS. Te oldest was 11 years old, Angela said. But Angela does not dwell on tose lost, but tose wo now ave a great life and ope for te future. Te greatest acievement we celebrate are te cildren wo ave made it and are able to fend for temselves, se said. I ave ad very wonderful people around, we cannot even claim tat we ave done it all by ourselves at te Centre. It as been a collection of so many people. It is not me and myself but God. Angela Miyanda,
