3 MEN S TENNIS The Grove City College men's tennis team will likely feature a number of new faces in the starting lineup during the season. But that does not mean that the Wolverines' mission has changed. Grove City will look to defend its Presidents' Athletic Conference title and make a fourth consecutive appearance in the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament. While graduation claimed a portion of the Wolverines' starting lineup, Grove City does return three starters and a fourth competitor who saw extensive action last year. Second-year head coach Jeff Buxton will look to combine that veteran core with several newcomers this season. Junior Peter Riley returns at the top of the Grove City lineup after playing first singles in each of his first two seasons. He earned the conference's Player of the Year award as a freshman and shared the team lead with 11 singles wins last year. Junior Colby Beighey, another two-year letterwinner, returns after helping anchor the middle of the Grove City lineup last season. He won the conference title at second doubles and earned league runner-up at No. 4 singles. Beighey will look to move up in the lineup this season. Junior Chris Collins saw action as a part-time starter in and compiled a 10-1 overall record in singles and doubles action. He will look to nail down a full-time spot in the lineup this season. Sophomore Jonathan Graber emerged as a rookie, capturing conference titles at both sixth singles and third doubles. Like Beighey, Graber will look to move up in the Wolverine lineup this season. SEASON PREVIEW Sophomore Jonathan Graber is a returning starter and conference champion for Grove City. Junior Josh Sauer has played as a reserve in each of his first two seasons and will contend for a starting spot. Sophomore Thane Feldeisen saw action as a reserve during the campaign and will also look to break into the lineup. Several newcomers are also in the mix to fill vacancies this season. Grove City will open the fall portion of the season September 7 by competing in a tournament at Allegheny College. The spring schedule begins March 19 with a home match against Division II foe Mercyhurst. Conference play begins three days later at Thomas More. The conference championships will be held April at the Pennbriar Club in Erie, Pa PRESEASON ROSTER Name Yr. Hometown/High School Colby Beighey Jr. Fombell, Pa./Riverside Jon Berzas Fr. 5 MEN S TENNIS IN REVIEW Prior to the season, the Grove City College men's tennis team featured plenty of depth and experience, two valuable assets for a program looking to defend the Presidents' Athletic Conference championship. Throughout the season, each of those assets would be severely tested as injuries forced first-year head coach Jeff Buxton to continuously shuffle the lineup. Marked improvement by several other conference programs only added to the difficulty of Grove City's journey. Despite all of those obstacles, the Wolverines continued to persevere. That persistence paid handsome dividends April as Grove City rallied to capture its 23rd consecutive league title and another trip to the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament. Grove City finished the two-day championships at the Pennbriar Club in Erie, Pa., with 46 team points, edging favored Saint Vincent by two points. Each of the nine flights featured a Grove City-Saint Vincent matchup in the championship final and the Wolverines won five crowns. Senior Blake Brogan pulled out a three-set victory over top-seeded Chris Andrejcik at fifth singles to clinch the conference championship. Senior Anthony Rosselli closed his conference career by prevailing at third singles and freshman Jonathan Graber highlighted his rookie season by upending top-seeded Sean Malone in the finals at sixth singles. The Wolverines held a pivotal 2-1 edge in doubles play at the conference finals. Rosselli and Colby Beighey earned an 8-6 win at second doubles while Brogan and Graber pulled out a 9-7 decision at third doubles. The conference championship gave Grove City its third straight trip to the NCAA Tournament. In the opening round at Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio, May 10, the Wolverines met in-state foe Wilkes. Rosselli and senior Caleb Fuller combined for a 9-8 victory at second doubles while senior Andrew Deckert returned to the lineup and teamed with sophomore Peter Riley for an 8-4 triumph at No. 1 doubles. However, the Wolverines' bid to advance in the tournament came to an end as Wilkes rallied for four singles wins and claimed a 5-2 victory. The Grove City program earned a cavalcade of postseason honors following the season IN REVIEW The Grove City College men s tennis team captured the 2013 Presidents Athletic Conference championship and earned the program s third straight invitation to the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament. 5

6 GROVE CITY COLLEGE IN REVIEW IN REVIEW Grove City fell to 1-1 in the spring with a hardfought 6-3 setback at regional power Oberlin March 9. Riley won at first singles and Collins captured a win at No. 6 singles for the Wolverines. Conference play opened March 13 with a 5-4 setback at Saint Vincent. Beighey, Brogan and Rosselli all won singles matches but that could not offset Saint Vincent's 2-1 edge in doubles play. The Wolverines quickly recovered from that rare league setback by churning out three straight shutout victories in a three-day span April 4-6. Grove City rolled to a 9-0 win at Westminster April 4 as five of the six singles wins came in straight sets. The next day, Grove City blanked visiting Thiel. Rosselli won 6-0, 6-0 at third singles and also recorded an 8-0 win with Beighey at second doubles. Grove City raised its conference record to 3-1 April 6 with a 9-0 win over visiting Thomas More as the Wolverines yielded just three total games in the match. Grove City closed its conference schedule with three more wins April Sophomore Colby Beighey tied for the team lead with 11 singles wins in He also posted an 11-2 mark in doubles play. Buxton earned the league's Coach of the Year award while Fuller earned Academic All-America honors from Capital One and the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Fuller, Riley and senior Dan McLaughlin all earned placement on the conference's Academic Honor Roll. Grove City opened the season by splitting a pair of fall matches. After an 8-1 setback against Division II West Liberty September 6, Grove City bounced back for a 7-2 win over local rival Westminster September 24. Beighey and Chris Collins teamed for a win at third doubles and Collins also prevailed in the No. 5 singles slot. The spring season commenced February 15 with an 8-1 indoor victory at Penn State Behrend. The Wolverines swept the three doubles matches and then took each of the first five singles bouts, including four in straight sets. Caleb Fuller concluded his career by earning Academic All-America honors from Capital One and the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). 6

9 MEN S TENNIS Founded in 1955, the Presidents Athletic Conference continues its mission of promoting intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Comprised of 10 select private colleges and universities - Bethany College, Chatham University, Geneva College, Grove City College, Saint Vincent College, Thiel College, Thomas More College, Washington & Jefferson College, Waynesburg University and Westminster College - the PAC remains a unique organization in this day of high-pressure intercollegiate athletics. With academics at the center of each member s philosophy, the PAC is built on the principle that an athletic program is a part of college life, but not an entity in itself. During the academic year, Chatham, Geneva and Saint Vincent all joined the PAC. Chatham competed for PAC championships for the first time during the academic year. 18 GROVE CITY COLLEGE ABOUT GROVE CITY COLLEGE The beautifully landscaped campus of Grove City College stretches over 150 acres and includes 28 neo- Gothic buildings. It is considered one of the loveliest in the nation. While the College has changed to meet the needs of the society it serves, its basic philosophy has remained unchanged since its founding in It is a Christian, liberal arts institution, dedicated to the principle of providing the highest quality education at the lowest possible cost. Grove City College offers undergraduate degrees in liberal arts, sciences, engineering, business, and music and is distinguished as a national leader in education.
