Patrick Case will speak about the why of data collection and how a clearer understanding of who our students are, and of their school experience, will enable school boards to more precisely identify and address barriers to student success, and make evidence-informed decisions. Bruce Davis will share insights on the TDSB s early data collection journey from his experience as a former school board trustee and Chair. Sid Ali will lead trustees through interactive case studies that will provoke thinking and discussion about what questions trustees should be asking to remove systemic barriers to equitable outcomes for all students. Indigenous Affairs, University of Winnipeg 15 MINUTE PRESENTATIONS 2:15 3:45 p.m. Dominion Ballroom 1 2:15 p.m. This keynote presentation will explore the role of public schools and educators in reconciliation. Where schools were once used as a weapon against First Nations children in Canada, the schools we nurture and operate today will be places of healing and reconciliation. Kevin will share ideas on Building an Inclusive School Climate, reaching out to non-traditional students and providing more pathways to success. Leading with CARE Promising Practices in Creating a Responsive Environment RENFREW COUNTY DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD WENDY HEWITT Chair PINO BUFFONE Director of Education NIC EDGE Student SEAN MCCLOSKEY Student This session will provide an overview of the Renfrew County District School Board s strategy for Mental Health / Well-Being, including promising practices associated with its Leading with CARE initiative for students, staff and school communities. In particular, Opeongo High School s peer mentorship team DEN Leaders Dream, Empower, Nurture! will be highlighted. A small group of senior students strive to make the school a more inclusive and positive environment for everyone. Encouraging and supportive methods are employed to promote the success of students on a daily basis. 2 Public Education Symposium

5 15 MINUTE PRESENTATIONS 2 2:30 p.m. Dominion Ballroom Integrating First Nations, Métis and Inuit Perspectives in Grade 3/4 and Grade 5/6 TRILLIUM LAKELANDS DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD HOLLY GROOME Indigenous Education Curriculum Consultant As Canadians on the road to reconciliation, educators play a critical role in inspiring students to learn, reflect and celebrate the diversity of Indigenous culture. Infused in curricular activities across the grades, educators are looking for access to authentic and accurate resources about and from the First Nations, Métis and Inuit perspective. THURSDAY 25 January This presentation will highlight two locally developed curriculum support resources designed to integrate the FNMI perspective in a culturally and historically accurate and authentic way. These resources were created to marry the place-based and social studies inquiry models with Indigenous perspectives, to provoke learning on the part of the student and the educator. Daily Physical Activity (DPA) for Trustees 2:45 p.m. 33:00 p.m. STEM: Board Well-Being Strategy (Students and Staff) KAWARTHA PINE RIDGE DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD JENNIFER LECLERC Ed.D., Director of Education GREG WELLS Ph.D., Professor, University of Toronto (via video) The STEM (Sleep, Think, Eat, Move 1.0 Program) is a multi-year initiative designed to sequentially develop the knowledge, awareness and application of scientific principles that enhance health, well-being and performance. This session will highlight how we accomplish the objective of dramatically improving the health, wellbeing and achievements of both staff and students in the KPRDSB community and the existing strengths we leverage wherever possible. But schools are pushed to produce homogenous, compliant, and employee-minded testtakers, as a result of the traditional education paradigm. A study conducted by the University of Waterloo was published in the fall of DANIEL HENDRY Sustainable Initiatives Coordinator, Limestone District School Board This presentation reports on the conclusions of the research study; interesting details from student feedback and parents perceptions, including the fact that this is a program that could be applied to other mid-sized North American municipalities.
