4 MISSION LITERACY T.E.A.C.H. MISSION LITERACY T.E.A.C.H. Rotary International's successful 'End Polio' program that resulted in eradication of polio, totally from India and from nearly 99% of the world, has motivated the Rotarians in South Asia to adopt ' Rotary's Total Literacy Mission'. In India, the Rotary India Literacy Mission wishes to achieve the literacy goals through its T.E.A.C.H. program. T - Teacher Support E - E-Learning A - Adult Literacy C - Child Development H - Happy Schools Thus, the T.E.A.C.H. 'program' includes five ' projects', each with specific focus but inter-linked with the others in objective and content so as to contribute to the program goal of Total Literacy accompanied with improvement in learning outcome of primary education and spread of adult literacy in various parts of the country. Understanding the enormity of the task, we have decided to adopt, in implementing T.E.A.C.H., a strategy of meaningful cooperation with all actors in the field, by forging strong partnerships with the government, corporate, national/state specific nongovernmental organizations, as well as international organizations working in various segments of this country - wide endeavour.

22 CLUB SERVICE THE CORNER STONE OF ROTARY Club Service pertains to the first object of Rotary, which reads as : The Objects of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise end in particular to encourage and foster. First the development of acquaintances as an opportunity for service. This makes it clear that whereas the purpose is service, the basis is the development of acquaintance amongst club membership. Drawing from the experience of more than hundred years of Rotary good club service depends upon a definite plan of action. For each part of the plan there is need for committees to supervise the particular function. Beginning with classifications on which the club is founded, it is necessary that an effective club must update its roster of filled and unfilled classifications regularly. It is equally important to the reach out to every available classification in the community to have a well represented club. The next emphasis is on attendance. To be effective, the club must have its membership well involved in Club activities. When members meet, fellowship is natural. Good fellowship activities keep the membership attracted. However, this can become possible by good programme that educates and entertains, along with a touch of variety. The club bulletin and The Rotarian magazine and the regional magazines fulfill a very important role to ensure that Rotarians are well informed. An organisation is as good as the image it projects of itself and its activities. This has made it necessary to have good public relations. When the club committee keeps the public well informed of its projects and activities, the club membership enjoys a positive image in the community. Good club service is a sure way to have an effective Rotary Club.

44 VOCATIONAL SERVICE THE SOUL OF ROTARY Rotarians share their skills and expertise through vocational service, one of the five Avenues of Service. Your vocational service efforts can play a vital role in improving the quality of life for those hardworking members of the community who need directions and expertise. By the participating in any of a vocational service activities or even talking about your job at a club meeting you can turn your experience into an invaluable resources for others. When Professionals join a Rotary club, they do so as a representative of their particular business or profession. This gives Rotarians the dual responsibility of representing their vocation within the club and of exemplifying the ideals of Rotary within the workplace. Vocational service comprises of several activities such as - Adherence to and promotion of the highest ethical standards in all occupations, including fair treatment of employers, association, competitions and the public. The recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, not just your own or those that are pursued by Rotarians. The recognition of your vocational talents to the problems and needs of society. The Values expressed in the 4-Way Test and Declaration for Rotarians in Business and Profession, which promote high ethical standards in the workplace, as well as in personal life. Vocational Service month is to be observed annually in January. It is a special month devoted to vocational service, to emphasis the involvement of clubs and individual Rotarians, in daily practice of the ideals of Vocational Service.

52 YOUTH SERVICE SERVICE TO NEW GENERATION Youth is the backbone of every nation 'Every Rotarian an example to Youth'. These words were adopted by the RI as expression of commitment to children and youth in each community in which the Rotary club exist. Focus is given on youth by the Rotary by creating opportunities to fruitfully canalize the enthusiasm and vigour of youth for the betterment of society around him through ROTARACT and INTERACT who are partners in service for Rotary. Your Service also provides programs and opportunities like Athletic teams, handicapped children centers, school safety patrols, summer camps, recreating areas, country fairs, child care centers and children's hospitals. Many club provide vocational counseling with Rotarians to prevent the increasingly drug and alcohol abuse and carry out awareness and prevention campaigns. In every instance, Rotarians have an opportunity to be role models for the young men and women of their community. One learns to serve by observing others. As our youth grow to become adult leaders, it is hoped each will achieve, that some desire and spirit to serve future generations of children. Youth services month observed annually in May. As Rotarians we have responsibility towards youth. Let us make them disciplined, well educated, well mannered human beings and inculcate in them the spirit of brotherhood, friendship and feeling for others through RYLAs, leadership camps and training seminars. Let us start Interact and Rotaract Clubs in our community. Let us also help the youth by helping them in securing jobs so that they can live in peace and harmony and be ready to face the challenges of life.

76 District 3052 The Rotary Foundation History of The Rotary Foundation At the 1917 convention, outgoing RI President Arch C. Klumph proposed to set up an endowment "for the purpose of doing good in the world." In 1928, it was renamed The Rotary Foundation, and it became a distinct entity within Rotary International. Growth of the Foundation In 1929, the Foundation made its first gift of $500 to the International Society for Crippled Children. The organization, created by Rotarian Edgar F. "Daddy" Allen, later grew into Easter Seals. When Rotary founder Paul Harris died in 1947, contributions began pouring in to Rotary International, and the Paul Harris Memorial Fund was created to build the Foundation. Evolution of Foundation Programs 1947 T h e F o u n d a t i o n e s t a b l i s h e d i t s fi r s t program, Fellowships for Advance Study, later known as Ambassadorial Scholarships Three programs were launched: Group Study Exchange, Awards for Technical Training, and Grants for Activities in K e e p i n g w i t h t h e Objective of The Rotary Foundation, which was later called Matching Grants Rotary introduced the H e a l t h, H u n g e r a n d Humanity (3-H) Grants. PROGRAMS OF THE ROTARY FOUNDATION Polio Plus Polio eradication is Rotary's top philanthropic priority. When Rotary Launched the Polio Plus program in 1985, there were more than polio cases in over 125 countries. Since 1988, Rotary has worked with its partners in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative to help immunize more than 2.5 billion children and reduce the incidence of polio by 99 percent. Rotary has contributed more than US$ 1.2 billion to the global eradication effort. India was declared Polio free in Rotary Peace Fellowships Rotary Peace Fellowship enable individuals to pursue a graduate degree in international relation, peace, conflict resolution, and related subjects, or a professional development certificate in peace and conflict studies at one of the six Rotary Peace Centers. Future Vision Plan In anticipation of the Rotary Foundation's 100-year anniversary in 2017, the Trustees set out to develop a plan to move the Foundation toward its second century of service. The plan reflects the desires and interests of Rotarians worldwide to give the Foundation a more sustainable and visible impact in the world. 81 The Rotary Foundation District 3052 GRANTS Rotary Foundation grants support Rotarian's efforts to change lives and serve communities. Rotary's Grant Model includes: District Grants District Grants are block grants that enable clubs and districts to address immediate needs in their communities and abroad. Districts may request upto 50% of their District Designated Fund (DDF) for one grant annually Districts manage and disburse these funds to support district and club sponsored activities, including vocational training teams, scholarships, humanitarian service projects, and cultural exchanges, provided they are aligned with the foundations mission. Global Grants Global grants offer clubs and districts opportunities to participate in strategically focused, high-impact activities. These grants fund large scale international humanitarian projects, vocational training teams, and scholarships that have sustainable, measurable outcomes in one or more of Rotary's areas of focus. Activities may be carried out individually or in combination-for example, one grant may support a vocational training team and a related humanitarian project. Global grant projects must have a minimum total budget of $30,000. This includes the World Fund award, which is based on a 100 percent match of District Designated Fund allocations or a 50% match of cash contributions from the sponsors. All global grants must be sponsored by two clubs or districts: a host partner in the country where the activity takes place and an international partner outside that country. When planning a global grant project, sponsors should conduct a thorough needs assessment that explores the pressing concerns in the project location as well as the club and community resources available to address them. 96 COMMUNITY SERVICE HEARTBEAT OF ROTARY Community Service is the third Avenue of Service of Rotary. It is often referred to as the heartbeat of Rotary. It encourage Rotarians to apply the Ideals of Service to their personal, business and community life. The concept of service to the community grew slowly in Rotary's early history and inspired Paul Harris to lead the campaign to have a public comfort station installed in Chicago, USA. As the years passed, Rotarians became increasingly conscious to improve their surrounding in a spirit of service. Today's Community Service projects brings the community closer to you. The motto of Rotary and the primary goal of every Rotarian is 'Service Above Self'. It contributes to the success and happiness in business and life and insists that the philosophy of service must be translated into action by Rotarians. The clubs are encouraged to engage in community welfare activities that are perceived as useful and necessary by its members and the community alike. In Carrying out the application of the ideal of service many clubs have developed above community service activities as opportunities for service by their members. We have recently seen the celebration of Rotary Century, During this period, we have touched lives of millions of people around the world, to improve the human conditions, with willingness to share their time, efforts, expertise and the resource to help to those in need. These men and women are Rotarians, who always offer service with love to the community.
