3 Training of Trainers of Medical Officers in Immunisation (20 th to 22 nd April 2009) Background The need for training and reorienting health workers and medical officers in immunization had been felt for the past few years due to the introduction of newer vaccines and advances in cold chain and vaccine technology. In this context, a handbook and facilitators guide for training of health workers in Immunisation had been developed by the Government of India with support from partner agencies and training of the health workers is underway in almost all the states in the past two years. For the training of Medical Officers in Immunisation, a Handbook on Immunisation and a Facilitators Guidebook has been developed. Master Trainers were trained in a workshop at NIHFW from 9 th to 11 th September Following this, a TOT was organized from 17 th to 19 th September 2008 at Jaipur by NIHFW where trainers from Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh were trained. Following the introduction of Hepatitis B in ten states, it was decided by the GOI that NPSP-WHO will be conducting the TOTs for Medical Officers in Immunisation in these ten states, UP, Bihar and other smaller states. NIHFW will be conducting the TOTs for the rest of the states. A TOT for trainers from Uttarakhand, Delhi and Gujarat was organized at NIHFW, New Delhi from April 20-22, Nominations were invited for five participants from Delhi, ten from Uttarakhand and ten from Gujarat. Overview Objective of the Workshop To familiarize the Trainers from the states with the contents and methods for Immunisation Training of Medical Officers to enable them to effectively conduct divisional / district level trainings of Medical Officers. 3
4 Training Methodology The training schedule in the Facilitators Guide was followed with minor variations. The first two days had classroom trainings. The third day had a field visit and presentations thereafter followed by the concluding sessions. The training tool kit to be used by the trainers in their trainings was used for this TOT. To make it participatory, the experiences of the participants from Gujarat related to the recent Hepatitis B outbreak in Modassa and its relation to safe injections and immunization waste disposal and the activities conducted by the state government were shared with the other participants. This made the training more interesting. 4
