(Interpreter in middle) Joining Moore and Catanese were delegates from five other ICUF institutions and delegates from several public state universities. "This partnership has a chance to grow by building student and faculty exchanges with our new partners in Taiwan," said Dr. Moore. "We were able to spend time with the President of Taiwan, President Ma Ying-jeou, who spoke at length about the economic value of higher education and the role of our schools in creating global opportunities," said Moore. "We look forward to building upon this MOU to create expanded program opportunities for our students abroad."

2 President Reed Elected To SACS Board Bethune-Cookman University President Trudie Kibbe Reed has been elected to the Board of Trustees of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges, the regional accrediting body for colleges and universities in 11 southern states. "It is an honor to be elected to serve on the SACS Board of Trustees, said Dr. Reed. "I embrace the commitment of institutions to sustain quality in all aspects of the education process. Doing so with the peer review and accountability of accreditation process ensures that colleges and universities maintain the high standards of excellence. President Reed Coach Heath Webber Teams Named NAIA Scholar Teams The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics awarded four teams from Webber International University the NAIA Scholar-Teams awards. The teams were WUI s Men s Tennis, Women s Golf, Women s Tennis, and Women s Cross Country. For a team to be considered for the NAIA Scholar Team award, it must have a minimum 3.0 grade point average on a 4.0 scale. Wow, as a coach of two of our teams that received this honor, I am extremely excited, stated Athletic Director and Head Men s and Women s tennis coach, Bill Heath. To have four teams from our school receive this award is very rewarding as an Athletic Director. UT Senior Educates Palestinian Refugees about HIV University of Tampa s Melissa Jiha is interning abroad with the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA). She is hoping to dispel the stigma connected with having HIV/AIDS in Palestine by offering a better understanding of the disease through education. I do feel I am making an impact on the Palestinian people not only by educating them and providing them with care but by being around them, Jiha said. They make me feel that my willingness to come from the other side of the world to help them is more than enough since they are in great need of helping hands. It is interesting because I get to compare and contrast the Caribbean and Middle Eastern frame of mind for the exact same disease. Interning in Palestine enables me to integrate myself into the Arabic health world which will eventually help me approach public health in a more global perspective. Lynn was also the recipient of Jenzabar s Heroic Leadership Award that recognizes individuals personal sacrifices that came as a result of their service to their fellow human beings. 6 E-Books Make Up Majority of SLU's Library E-books will make up more than half of Saint Leo University s library collection, starting this fall. With the acquisition of a new e-book database, 53 percent of the library s collection will consist of online material. Students are able to download e-books to their computers, Smartphone s, and ipads. To me, this is the way all universities will need to go, said Brent Short, Director of Library Services. Short said the biggest benefit of e-books is that they are accessible anywhere and anytime. Expanding online material is particularly important at Saint Leo, where the majority of the student body is based off campus, he said. We have people in the military so obviously, online resources are crucial for them. Edward Waters Receives Gift of $2 Million Edward Waters College received a gift of $2 million from The African Methodist Episcopal Church to serve as a launching pad for the college to propel itself into academic excellence and financial stability. EWC s Interim President Nathaniel Glover stated the gift should encourage other organizations and individuals, local and abroad, to give with confidence, trusting that their donations are being utilized to positively transform students' lives and thrust the college toward becoming an elite, nationally-respected institution of higher learning."we want everyone to know we are on the way up," Glover said. "EWC is on the rise." Interim President Glover Barry Awarded $1.2 M Congressionally-Directed Grant Barry University s College of Health Sciences was awarded a $1.2 million Congressionally-directed grant by the U.S. Department of Defense. The grant will be used to fund a two-year project designed to assist with military and humanitarian needs by quickly testing water for safe use during emergency conditions. This is a tremendous opportunity to give undergraduate students an opportunity to have hands on field experience in research. The grant award recognizes the capability of our faculty to contribute to scientific findings that will benefit the Department of Defense, said Dr. Bell, Dean of Barry s College of Health Sciences. FL Tech Goes Greener with Minor in Sustainability Dr. Bell This fall Florida Institute of Technology will offer its undergraduate students the opportunity to minor in Sustainability. No matter their major, any student wishing to learn sustainable practices and enhance marketability may complete credits for a minor in this increasingly critical discipline. There is a pressing need to create a sustainable future and an increasing number of undergraduate programs in sustainability nationwide, said program director Richard Aronson, head of the Florida Tech Department of Biological Sciences, College of Science. There are more jobs opening in sustainability and research funding is also becoming more available. 6

7 A F T E R Flagler s Renovation Project Enhances Campus B E F O R E Flagler College s Kenan Hall Plaza is undergoing a dramatic architectural change that will provide students, faculty and staff a new gathering space. The project is designed to host a variety of seating and gathering opportunities including special events and theater-style seating for presentations, lectures, and movie nights. Larry Weeks, Director of Business Services and campus planner at Flagler College, said the new plaza has many benefits. One of the main purposes for this project is to provide a larger gathering space for the students in between classes, Weeks said. Typically, you see many students huddled outside of Kenan Hall, and this makes it difficult for people to walk through that area. The project is expected to be completed by the time students return for the fall Semester. FSC s Campus Among Nation s Most Beautiful Florida Southern College s stunning campus is ninth on The Princeton Review s Most Beautiful Campus list for The Most Beautiful Campus list, one of the strongest indicators of quality of life on college campuses, cites FSC s campus as an inspiring place to live and study. In addition to the world s largest single-site collection of Frank Lloyd Wright structures, the campus also boasts historic architecture. From formal rose gardens to working citrus groves to environmentally sustainable native plant areas, the 100-acre campus on the shores of Lake Hollingsworth offers a wealth of natural oases and tropical retreats. FSC Campus NSU Professor to Receive Award for Lifetime Service Nathan Azrin, a professor at Nova Southeastern University s Center for Psychological Studies, was the recipient of the Victor G. Laties Award for Lifetime Service to the Society for the Experimental Analysis of Behavior (SEAB). President Len Green of SEAB stated, Your contributions to our discipline, science, and society have been remarkable, sustained, and seminal. Your work exemplifies all the best of our discipline the commitment to superior science, the asking of important questions, and the development and experimental evaluation of significantly important applied interventions. Few have achieved your level of excellence. Nathan Azrin 7
